For some reason I couldn't be here for a long time. I have missed this place so much!
Now I'm back in bowmaking again– here is the first, a simple straight stick.
She is a 62” symmetrical bow – handle exact in the geometrical middle. She is heavy heat treated, no stain on the belly! The back is dyed to match with the belly. The outer lines of the limbs are sanded to get the bright stripes. Handle is gentle bending. Overlays are osage, standing rings and very small – only ¼” at kerf. The handle is dressed with one piece of cherry bark and yarn wrappings, the upper works as arrow pass. No shelf.

The way you give a simple bow so much to admire is a talent.
-
That bow is just amazing, I love your posts!

Its good to see you posting again....it was worth the wait!

Hello Simon, firstly that bow is lovely! I have a couple of questions: As I am currently trying to coax a bow out of a piece of elm myself.
1. What is the draw weight?
2. Why did you heat treat the belly soooo much?
3. Did that add a lot of weight?
4. In your opinion (seeing as I think of you as a Meister bowyer) can one heat treat a bow too much?
5. Did you boil the bark before applying or simply wrap it around?
6. Can you send the bow to me?
Many thanks Peter

Thanks everybody! Nice to get that warm welcome!

I haven't measured the time, but estimate about 30 min.Simson, That bow is perfect sir, the shape is perfect, the color is perfect, and that "half circle" is perfect......and then you had to go and add that cherry bark grip, also perfect 8) I sure hope that it gets to the huntin woods at least once......I'm blown away.

Uuuuh, Rich - don't talk about perfection! I know there are many things that can be improved .....

1. As the title says: 56/28
2. Always love to do experiments, I tried this on several bowwoods (an heavy heat treated osage will come soon)
3. About 12 - 15 pounds
4. I'm no master bowyer! But yes, you could burn the wood. Lot of variables: temperature, distance heatgun, time, species, thickness limb, ...
The carbonizing effect should not go further than middle of limb.
5. I have boiled it about 10 min., cleaned up, boiled again for 20 min, then quick applied
6. Yes we I can

Black beauty 8)

Nice bow! Your tips are impossibly small... I like it. The bark handle is also a nice touch.
-
That is some nice work. Very unique and very cool.
-
Fine piece of work. Very well done all around.
-
One last question Simon, your tips, as far as I can see you have just cut a nock into the osage overlay and no guide on the sides, is that correct? Is the bow a little bent sideways I mean? Did you use two component glue for the overlays or wood glue??? Oh dear that is more than one question sorry, but your bow has just got me so excited about carrying on with my elm.
Danke Peter

Sweet looking bow. Especially those tiny tips. Very well done.

How did you finish/join the cherry bark?
The bark is one piece and glued on with TB III. Finish is a homemade hardening oil made of several components (used on all my bows), the bark is also finished with this oil.

Thanks, Marco
Elm is very good for heat treating - see TBB chapter about that by Marc StLouis
Thank again everybody!

I am not going with the idea of copying you Simon, as I think that would be embarrassing for me not for you. The elm bow is coming along though. It is not an easy wood to work with but feels very nice. I have just put on some osage overlays on the tips as I have gone as thin as I dare on this one. Today I am going to heat treat the belly after scraping a bit and then have a look at the tiller. I have not strung it yet, this is a new thing for me I am trying to do as much as possible before hand and go by feel. Dangerous I know for an oaf like me. I hope for a good heavy bow, no recurves or heat correcting, if I get lucky I will try and post a pic.

That's one fine looking bow! thanks for sharing.
-
Awesome awesome awesome!!!
-
That is sweet! Love the tips

I keep coming back to ogle this bow...it is sooo nice. I do have a question about the grip - does it work just a bit? It seems to be pretty shallow, and I THINK it looks like it is flexing just a smidge at full draw. Would you mind giving the handle dimensions? Thanks! Looking forward to seeing more of your beautiful bows!
-
Simple stick, maybe for you! :o

Yes, exactly what you have said - you have good eyes.
