Well I took another small step along the road to one day becoming a Bowyer...
I started this bow the first week of January when my Mini Monkey Elyas went in to the Hospital...
Lord knows it helped keep my feet on the Ground.
Crepe Myrtle
1.5 inches wide for all but the last six inches or so, tapering to 7/16 at the Nocks.
45" Nock to Nock
Pulling 45# @ 22.5 inches...
Texas Ebony overlays
Mild Hollow Limb design
Started with 1.5 inches of reflex.
Was sitting at 3/4 inch of set when un strung.
Had Forty Nine shots through her when she let go... Tension Failure.
I was asking her to do A Lot...
And she was doing it well, right till the end...
And it was that Last Shot (#50) before I was gonna put the Lip Stick on... :'(
Such is Life... I've already started another...
The Point of Growth is this is my first Failure...
It took me Thirty bows to get here.
And I seriously doubt I would have made it this far without a failure, if I didn't have access to this site and the Great Folks on Here.
I hate to see this bow go, she was light as a feather in hand.
I know... A Stiff Hanndle, well mostly, on a bow this short...
It's what was in my head, and had to try it...

Looks like a beauty while it lasted. I know what you mean- just gotta try things sometimes.

Gus Im under the impression it broke due to the hollow limb, Im still not sold on that being a viable option. It split along the back because it collapsed on itself. The shear was only after the split occurred I bet. Ive never used CM. But I know friends that have. Its good wood. A flat or slightly radiused belly would have helped IMO and probably made a bow out of it.

The back also looks like it has been treated a bit roughly.

I was pushing this piece harder than I should have...

The handle was Semi Stiff, it did bend at full draw, but not enough...

I got Greedy and was hoping to hang on to Draw Weight by using the HLD to retain extra Width...
The first thing that got me thinking of using the HLD design on this one was the big knot on the outer portion of the top limb. I felt that it needed to at least bend into that knot if not through it...

What you're seeing is some Cambium left over...
I took my time taking the bark off and was careful not to violate the back... :)
There are a bunch of humps, bumps and valleys on this stuff.
CM is some pretty tough stuff over all.
I roughed out another piece, about eight inches longer.
Tried leaving the bark on, but it won't stay.
But it started shedding bark at Floor Tiller...
But that's okay...

I don't know what happened but do know some have liked that design with fg bows. Try going longer. Jawge

I know that is leftover bits of bark and cambium, but still. The exposed bits of actual wood don't look very pristine. What did you de-bark with?

I think I see what you are seeing.
The main part of the rupture is 3 inches down the limb, in the deeper part of the hollow.
The splinter started abiut 5 inches down the limb at a little hump in the back.
Are you thinking the Rupture Lifted the Splinter?
Or the Splinter led to the Rupture?

I did handle it gently... used a freshly sharpened scraper.
Though I find in retrospect, CM doesn't really like the scraper much.
And the wood distorts easily with a thumb nail...
I don't see an obvious flaw at the failure, but can't fully rule it out.
The next time I skin the bark on CM I'll sand it Too... :)

I do Gus. Its all speculation on my part. But I think the hollowed out portion ruptured lengthwise after a certain amount of bend took place, then of course after it weakened in tension and the tear showed up running the other direction across the limb. If something is hollow and it cant simply kink, it will split instead. Least that's my take on it.
