Does anyone know where I can get lemonwood (degame) staves anywhere? Can you even still get it?

Lemonwood was origanum imported from Cuba. Since tere is a trade embargo in act lemonwood is hard to find. Some wood suppliers get ahold of it from other countries. But you'll probably end up on a waiting list.

It's Gilmer Wood (dot com) by the way. I've seen lemonwood on their stocklist, but don't know if they carry any decent stuff. I just keep drooling over their website though...fantastic lumber for sale.

I've made several laminated lemonwood bows from their stock. It's good stuff.

Gordon, do you think it is as good as osage or yew. I made a couple of bows from it this year and was not really imressed with it. I have enough left for a couple more and plan to do a elb style instead of an american long bow.

Steve, I don't know if I would rate it as highly as yew or osage, but it's pretty good bow wood from my experience. I can make the belly rounded and it doesn't seem to take much set. I also like how it is so easy to work - no knots or grain swirls. It's the easiest wood I've ever put a scraper to. If it wasn't so expensive to aquire it would be the perfect wood for beginner bowyers.

Man I wish they would just let us import lemonwood from cuba. I'm sure all the politicians and big shots buy their cuban cigars cheap enough. What threat are they really to us, we got china ready to blow everyone one of our satellites out of space with their new glider missiles, but we still buy every little thing they can manufacture.

I really enjoyed making the hickory backed lemonwood ALB recently. I was very cautious with it because of stories of fretting and excess set but so far I have not seen either. She's not completely shot in but I am impressed with lemonwood.

Degame is what you want, there are some 'false lemonwoods' that are sold as lemonwood but i've never got to the bottom of what they actually are.
Although it's very easy to work the stuff i've had did take excessive set for it's density....I stay well away now. It's too expensive for what you get performance-wise. £170 for a 6 x 2 x 7 or about £40 for the same dimensions of ipe.
