I thought you guys might appreciate this epic bend test on a shagbark hickory that happened when a tree felling went the wrong direction. The house in question was being demolished so no worries >:D The uncut section of the tree that refused to break was only about 6" thick. Instead it split straight up the tree, and made about an 80 degree bend in a 3' radius. I think these will turn out to be some pretty good staves when they are seasoned. I'll be going back this spring to clear some hackberry off the adjacent lot.

I wanna know how much set that wet hickory took.
My thought exactly, I only took staves from the unbent sections of the trunk.
Its got a little twist to it. ;D
Yeah I will have some bending in my future if I start one of these staves, worst case I'll have some hickory to throw in the smoker :)

This reminds me of a giant bow I have been wanting to build.

I'm glad there aren't bodies laying around there. That's a classic barber chair cut which is pretty dangerous my friend. Maybe next time do your face cut( hinge) then bore through an inch and a half behind the hinge and back cut. I've seen that go bad too many times. Hope the staves work out.

Hickory is just about the strongest wood I've ever used for a bow. When roughing out I've taken 1/4 inch strips and tried to break them apart and it is almost impossible. Jawge

I watched as a landowner did this with an ash tree and it smashed his tractor. It was close to smashing him.
He put a face cut in it and then got the saw pinched when he was still several inches from getting through to the face cut....so he decided to raise his front end to the max and give the tree a push. I yanked the saw out then watched as he decided to just push it the rest of the way. It just split and then came back at him when it all split loose. He was lucky it just smashed the tractor.

Really glad to hear nobody was hurt, I have known a few trained timber fallers killed by barber chair tree, nothing to mess with, be careful out there that could really mess up your day. Ed

Thanks for all the captions, as well as the safety advice. This cut went wrong from the very beginning. It wanted to go the opposite way from the notch. We saw the split starting early on and kept well back. Tree went down in slow motion due to the hickory not wanting to break. As fun as this hobby is, it is a good reminder that a lot of the things we do can be dangerous and we can't take our tools/environment for granted. I will be cutting smaller trees from now on ::)

I feel I should say some more here, not just to you strongbow, but everyone else reading this. I've been in the forestry business for a good while and bad things can happen very quickly, even to experienced cutters. Diameters of trees under tension don't matter. Springpoles, if you don't know what they are, please look em up, are very dangerous. Plenty of two inch diameter trees that are under tension have maimed or killed. If not cut properly, they explode, typically into the gut, chest or head area. Never cut a spring pole low or high. You have to shave the middle and relax it. I don't mean to hijack your thread, just felt that I should bring this to everyone's attention.
