Title: twisty osage stave ideas?
Post by: DuBois on February 18, 2014, 01:08:25 pm
Got home from work after midnight and had to get into this one for some reason.

What do you all think is the best design on this?

65" long and can get about 1.5" at widest. Natural deflex handle. Twist needs to come out and maybe tips flipped?

I left extra growth rings over the handle for thickness but it may need to be bendy handle.

2 little nail holes in mid limb need filled.

Thanks folks,
Doober

TBB 4 has a chapter on character bows.

Here is what I would do.

I would chase my ring, etc. Then do a bit of floor tillering to remove some wood fro the thickness.

I would leave the width as is and not worry about areas that are narrower. The tiller will take care of that.

I would also heat in some reflex particularly the last several inches of the limbs.

Then I would continue.

The type of stave where there are different entry points of the limb into the handle can be tricky. You'll see one in TBB 4.

Ring chased.
Twist removed.
Pretty straight and string alignment shoud be close.

Used steam on first limb and got checks along grain about 6" long in 1 spot and 1/4" from edge  :(

Super glue and rawhide?

No structural problems with checks unless they run off the side of the bow. Super glue in the checks will fix you up. When you steam wood it helps to cover the area with shellac. It will help prevent these checks.

I know I have seen you post this very thing before, and like a stubborn *&5$ I went ahead and tried steam anyway  ::)
Will it be ok without rawhide as long as the checks don't run off?

Thanks Pat,
Marco

If your really worried about the small checks after u fill them put a small decorative wrap of thread around it. And do one on the other side. After tiller is done of coarse. Looks sweet. It make it a static handle at 65".

OK Laflair,
I left a build up of growth rings over the handle area for thickness and it will be static and about 8" including fades. Gonna shorten an inch off each end down to 64" t-t.
