Title: Florida Hogs
Post by: huntertrapper on December 22, 2007, 09:37:49 pm
I plan on hunting hogs in florida in the summer. Now i saw a website that said hogs were in year round, whether its true or not i dont know. Saying it is, what would be the best time to be out there and my grandparents live in orlando any game lands close i can drive to? also, again saying thier in, are they extremely spooky or easy to stalk. For those who live or have hunted florida any bit of info or pictures of hogs and hog hunting would be great thanks.

I live a half hour SW of Orlando. To tell you the truth, the summer is the worst time to stalk hunt hogs.It is to hot and hogs don't want to coe out till after dark.Unless you are hunting over active feeders. There are several good places to hunt them if you have money on private property around Orlando.Try Googleing ,the Osceola Ranch.

...........Live about 200 miles south of Eddie. Like he said. Hawgs fer the most part are nocturnal at that time of year. Ya ever see "skeeters as big as p-51's ? ;D.Like he said try private land ifn ya got the $ fer it.........bob

They ,"hole up" in whatever thick stuff they want too.Usually palmetto, with tunnels big enough for you to crawl through on your stomach. As far as us killing them here in the summer,I think I can speak for Bob on this one ::),Sure,we live here. ;D

I hope you like short bows if you want to crawl through the palmetto and get a shot.  Like maybe a 20" bow that pulls 60# and you can shoot from your belly. Justin

More like one as wide as your shoulder.I crawled in a big clump of palmettos once with just a knife blood trailing a real big gut shot sow.The knife was just to make me feel good. If you hunt on private property, you don't need a hunting license

............HunterTrapper..I applaud yer enthusiasm. Crawlin' in palmetto thickets ya not only have ta deal with the hawgs but there is a few other nasty things in there. Like LARGE Rattlers an coral snakes, ifn ya get hit by a coral yer dead period, ya aint got the time ta get back ta the truck. Wild rose and bramble bushes and some other stuff ya may meet. No tellin' whats in there. Ya dont wanna be in the swamps at daybreak when the hawgs are, cause ya aint seen 'skeeters till ya try. We call em gallon nippers , ya can figure out why. Summer is the rainy season here and they breed like ya aint never seen. Hawgs have a tough hide so the skeeters dont bother em' much. Ifn ya wound a hawg and it gets in the palmetto thickets it has one thing on its mind. Hawgs have a ferocious will ta live and a boar er sow is gonna try ta get ta ya . In a palmetto thicket its no contest. Wild hawgs are real mean when wounded. This aint ta scare ya er put ya off just givin' ya some info like ya wanted. Gently said yer tough but hawgs er tougher. Trust me on this. Eddie and I have been huntin' em all our lives down here. Good luck...............bob

Isn't that 20"?   ;D
Bob, Id lots rather run into a hog in the palmetto than one of those dang water moccasins.  Justin

........Justin.............Water mocs are USUALLY by water er real damp ground. Most palmettos are dry, I say most but not all. In swamps edges and river bottoms they wont be dry.  I say usually but I have seen em' in there when I used ta go in ifn I had too. Darn right I would also rather have a hawg than one of them. Corals are the real ones that are the problem. Like I said in the other post ifn they hit ya especially from the waist up yer dead. Below ya maybe got a chance but its iffy. I NEVER take my bow in them with me if I have ta go in. I use a special short spear I made when I go in ta keep the hawg offa me ifn it comes at me  Ya know hawgs deserve respect, they can be very dangerous with a ferocious will ta live. Amazes me that the literature written and hunters dont respect em. That is until they wound one and have ta blood trail it and then they find it went inta a palmetto thicket. Oh yeah, we call em' tree spiders. Usually they are high between trees but ya find em in palmettos thickets. They are as big as yer hand. Nothin' like havin' one of them boyz on yer ta wake ya up and break yer concentration in there. Ifn there are hawgs in the thicket ya probably wont find snakes 'cause the hawgs eat em up. Ifn the hawg just ran in, all bets are off. Betcha Eddie could tell ya some stories as I can..............bob

I think the worst thing about crawling through them is you are looking for drops of blood, snakes and pi$$ed off hog in that order. You are usually soaking wet from sweat, and the very worst thing is those little carpenter ants biting the crap out of the back of your neck.

.......................Hahaha! Yup forgot about the scorpions , cow ants an carpenter (bull) ants. Wish I could say the same about leaches down here in the swamps Eddie. Auggie ya better hope the ants dont get in yer drawers :o ;D.Hahaha! Hawg huntin' at its finest, makes the meat taste better when ya find em an cook em  ;)........bob

If Auggie gets those ants in his drawers he will make a wounded hog look calm.  ;D

Only 5 ? ???,Well what's embarrassing is I missed 5 the day before.I had to work in the morning on Weds. and check in on Thurs., This hunting is from 3 PM till dark on Weds. and the morning on Thurs. I didn't mean to show meat hanging since this was gun hunting. So a Moderator can get rid of it if they want. Oh,  Yea ,I can do that. :D This ranch has to kill so many hogs a year to control them and we had 17 doe permits to fill  in 2 weeks ,the end of the season down there. So we were gunning and cleaning, soon to be followed by BBQ'n. I just thought I'd crawl back in some of those small Palmetto clumps with the flash on the camera. Some of those pigs were shot in that thick crap while we were on our stomachs trying to see them. And what was cool,is this morning ,turkey's started Gobbling. ;D
