I was splitting some Hickory today and saw something white in side of the split.

Looks like an old insulator for a power line. My dad collects these, I don't know that I've seen any in white porcelain though. He's got some black ones, and quite a few glass ones.
-
That is what it is. A insulator for a electric fence. Dean

Electric fence insulator. Someone had some cattle where you were cutting at one time or another.

All the more reason to wear eye protection when splitting.
-
How old is the tree?
-
Leave it in and use it for an arrow rest :D
-
Wow,that would have made a mess out of a millsaw i guess. :o
-
Good thing you were splitting instead of cutting :)
-
It was a pretty good size tree. probably close to 14 inches across at the stump. A nd yes always wear safety glasses splitting out staves. I have seen pieces of those steel wedges fly off also. Just like a bullet.

Those ceramic insulators make good arrow straightening tools. Cool find! 8)

well thats cool

Here is a close up. Play heck with a bandsaw blade.
-
Cool!
As Dean hinted at, I would consider grinding off that edge of the wedge. It will eventually fly off anyway, and could do some unexpected damage... :)
-
Woe! Be glad you split that one Dean! Some nice straight hickory too...

Good thing you were splitting instead of cutting :)
Darn straight!

8) cool find

The cover of a Lee Valley catalogue recently featured a piece of stump with an adjustable wrench that the tree had swallowed.
