Title: Sneak peek. Mulberry go boom
Post by: BOWMAN53 on February 22, 2014, 10:14:16 pm
Thought I'd share a teaser of what I'm working on. It's the mulberry stave Bubby gave me.

Mulberry makes a good bow. It handles a sapwood back pretty good too, Jordan.

I like the shape and character in that stave, should make a nice, The sapwood left on the back of mulberry is an attractive look IMO, I did that on one I made and really liked the way the bow came out. I chased it down to the last ring of sap and the bow had a somewhat yew look to it. Hope to see more of yours as you get it worked, looking good!

I'm really liking the look of this one too. There's two rings of sap left. Chasing the rings were a pain in the butt.

Looks kinda like the mulberry I'm working right now.
That wood is so light weight compared to the osage I am also working on.
I got a draw knife looks just like that too at an antique store and it is sooo much better than the one  returned to Menards.
Lookin good! Keep it comin'

Great looking stick Jordo.  I like the contrast of the color.  Those humps and bumps look like it would be time consuming to chase.

I've made 2 Mullberry bows starting on 3rd   Can you get more poundage out of them if you leave one ring of sap wood?

Nice break! Fill the break with urac, restore to the unbroken position, clamp, glue on a handle section on the belly after step one cures to support the fix and make the handle nonbending. Proceed with finishing your bow, I have saved much worse.

That's a great idea Eric. I'll do that then sinew back it.

Sinew is a lot of work, I would save the sinew for a pristine bow.
