I saw an article the other day about how some folk tattooed themselves out of consideration for available jobs, something to think about. One thing to remember, the current tattoo trend is a fad and will fade away like all other fads have in the past. Come to think of it, your tattoos will fade as well and look pretty bad in another 20 years or so, just look at some old WW11 vet's tats, nothing to get excited about for sure.

As a little boy, and like all little boys, I worshipped my dad and was gonna do everything like him.  I used to trace the old school Navy anchor, rope, and crossed daggers tattoo on his forearm.  I loved it and all it stood for.  One day I told  him I would get a tattoo just like it.  He told me that if I did, no matter how old I was, he'd beat my ass from here to Hong Kong. He only got it because all his buddies told him THEY were all going to get it, too. When his was finished they all chickened out.

And like all little boys, I grew up and went thru all the Oedipal things young boys do to prove they are NOT their father.  I have disappointed him in more ways than I can count, including having a tattoo artist for a best friend!  Just two weeks ago we were sitting around and I was telling another story about me and Mikey (the tat guy) and my Dad asked me, "So, how damn many tattoos have you got."  I just grinned, stood up, and pulled off my shirt.  I turned around slowly to give him good look.  "Not a damn one!" I told him.

I am not saying don't get a tattoo.  I am saying something MUCH more important.  Don't make a permanent mistake out of a temporary feeling.

Tattoos have become a lot more accepted in the workplace recently but you still have to watch where you get it. I'm 19 and about 80 percent of my peers have them. I have one on my arm.

Have an idea and if you still think it's a good idea in a year or two go ahead... don't do something you'll regret. Oh and don't be cheap!

What he said. As a teacher where I work if you have one you have to keep it covered up. My dad had a small "C" on his hand, but when he met my mom my grandmother didn't care much for him because the first and only thing she saw was his small tattoo. My dad burned it down and out with acid. He also has a small C on his thigh, but that one is not visible to all.

Like JW said. Two things I have not disobeyed or dishonored my dad on are getting a tattoo and getting on a motorcycle.

As I young man I wanted both, but a promise to your pops is a promise.

No archery tats thus far, but being someone who's pretty into the idea of body modification and making the changes you find appealing to your own body I'm probably likely to get one; maybe just an arrow or something who knows. Got piercings a-pleanty but no tats quite yet. Just remember unless you make a really really good living it's going to be on your body for the rest of your live.

It used to be taboo. Now after almost 13 years of War, Vets with "Meat Tags"(Tats to identify you if a traumatic kill were to happen to you) are quite common. Have even seen State Troopers with tats that show. Makes a proud statement of having seen the elephant....Not saying they are for everyone, but you can read a story in those that have served.

I have a deer skull with a broken primitive arrow below it on my right shoulder.  I plan on getting something else archery related at some point.  I have 5 total and they can all be covered up with a T-shirt.

I have nothing against tats but my point is only that you better think long and hard before you do it, I have buddy that has his ex girlfriend name on his neck, he says it's impossible to get a new girlfriend when all the gals can see who he broke up with last lol :o

I'm a high school teacher, welding, and have close to 50 tats, all can be covered up with cloths. For the chicks name on the neck, bad move to start with, but if it were me I'd have a black oval on my neck real soon after that chick was gone from my life. Oh, I tell allmy students that tats are for hooligans.  ;), dp

Well, I suppose being a tattoo artist, I should way in on this one. 8) Obviously the majority of people still have pretty strong feelings, mostly negative about tattoos.

They do have the ability to instantly hamper your job prospects, your parents, and in-laws first impressions of you. However, they do also have the ability to tell stories, experiences, and believes of the tattooed. Which can be good and bad sometimes. But what I've learned after tattooing hundreds or maybe thousands of people is, a tattoo doesn't portray one's character nearly as much as one's actions do.

That being said, I am a firm believer in the saying, "keep it where the judge can't see it"

I have 2. One on my left upper arm and one on my right forearm. A portion of the one on my left upper arm was one my friend did. It was his first time giving a tattoo.  :o   Another portion of that tattoo was the first tattoo I got. It was done by Eddie Piece, an old school tattoo artist from Augusta GA in the early 1970s. It is a rose in an old style tattoo with thick outlines and only red, green and black ink. My others are a newer style by Jack Witt in Savannah with thin outlines, more artistic design and many different colors. I've never regretted getting any of my tattoos. They are part of my history.

I don't have any archery tattoos.  I have some archery related scars, but not tats.  I only have one tattoo now.  It's the fighting Irish leprechaun on my chest.  I got it when I was sixteen and thought I was quite the tough guy.  It didn't have anything to do with Notre Dame.  I didn't give it much thought until my daughter's started to get old enough to notice such things.  Now I regret it.  If I had all sons, I'd probably have several more tats by now.  I know its hypocritical, but I don't want my girls getting inked.   If my son wants to when he's grown, I probably won't mind.  I sure ain't gonna give him my blessing before he's grown though.  Just my .02.     Josh

I have an archery related tattoo. I got it in 2004, the same year I started making bows :) I'd say it's one of the only tattoos I have that I actually really still like...

I have several tats and the ones I got in 1990 are still as clear as the day I got them. I have ravens, a raven feather, a red stag, a leaping mountain ram, a rose, and a couple others harder to explain but have meaning to me. My archery tat is actually a hunting charm. It's four crossed arrows behind three phases of the moon and the North Star. Below that is a raincloud. Above it is an arrowhead. I drew that one myself and had the artist ink it on. That's the one that gets the most interest from people. That one and the red stag impressed the heck out of my wife on our first date.

Definitely be sure your tats have meanings that are deep. Your medicines, your totems, your ancestral affiliations, and so on. Girlfriend's name no, wife's name yes.

Another definition of tatoo, loosely,  is to beat on something. While I have no pictographic adornment, I have been rapped on the head twice when the upper limbs on two different bows let go. ;D

38 years old and not a single tat.  I'm the ONLY guy I know my age who I grew up with that doesn't have one.  At this point in my life, I'm really pleased I didn't get one.  Came close several times but couldn't ever come up with something that I thought I'd be content with permanently.

A tattoo arm guard?  Yeah, I'd give it a few years before I'd pull the trigger on that, but hey, to each their own.

I find it interesting though that at this point in life that I'm actually "different" for not having one.

I suppose the "tattoo" I got hit with in my eye was quite enough!  Sure as S#@t it left a permanent enough mark for me.

WillH, that is a nice tat.  I'd be able to live with that one myself.

Tattoos are certainly not for everybody. They are lifelong so you have to be sure what you get is what you want. You can get cover-up tattoos over existing ones, but you'll be limited to what will cover it effectively. When I first started getting them, most of the people who got them were military, prisoners, gang members or people into punk or metal rock. Now just about everyone gets them and the social stigma has pretty much disappeared, which is good. People ought to be able to do what they want with their own bodies, after all.

including having a tattoo artist for a best friend!

Been victim to that as well! Me and my friends got tattooed from head to toe before we were 20. For a while it helped me get laid I guess, I "think" anyway, :). Sure don't help in a job interview though. One guy asked me if I could cover up the tattoos on my knuckles, I don't know if he wanted me to where gloves?  :) If your gonna get tattoos, they are addicting, know when to stop, best advice is never go below the elbow or anywhere you can't cover it up. And it is really easy to get Hep C and other fun stuff too, even from the most professional shops. The virus can live in the little ink cup things, not just the needles, and if the guy doesn't change ink cups with every customer (which a lot don't even if they say they do) you can ruin your life in more than one way. So stay safe and think about it.

I read an interesting article the other day about they three things that were necessary for success in life, the one that shouted the loudest to me was "impulse control". This component would tie closely to the current tattoo trend as may of the participants get their tats on a whim after seeing others they know do the same and are struck with a sudden impulse to follow suit.

Every time I go in to the local Mc Donald's and see the 30 something age girls behind the counter with really unattractive tattoos on their arms, chests and necks I suspect their lack of impulse control in other areas of their lives is exactly what put them behind the counter a Mickey Dees as they approach middle age.

Like I have said before, tattoos on a true warrior like our military personal are a good fit and look perfectly natural, cute college coeds, definitely out of place.

I've been thinking about my next tat as well.  I've always thought of getting an upper arm/shoulder/chest sleve type tat with a large dragon.  However, recently I'm considering something more archery related as It's becoming such a cornerstone of my hobbies/life.  Maybe an indian crouching in some cover as he comes to full draw.  perhaps with his young child crouching behind him watching and learning.  Still thinking it through...  Love the tat Will!

My next tats are going to be copies of cave paintings, maybe a neanderthal profile and possibly one of Ishi.  I have so many that it really does not matter what they are as long as they fit into the empty spaces available. For a while while my wife was getting back into it I would go through a Hopi art/jewelry book that I have and just pick a design or pic I liked and that would be the tat for the day. I still like them all. I do have one though, on my upper thigh of a girl. My sons' have seen it their whole lives, but just lately, 9 and 6 now, they are commenting on her lack of cloths.  :-[  hehehe.   ;), dp

My one tattoo took me from age 16-19 to design and commit to.  Anything else will be at least a year in the making before the needle touches my skin.
Will it incorporate an arrowhead?  Probably...  More likely something simple and primitive.

I'd like to get a tattoo for my welsh heritage, something archery related would be cool. Maybe like a welsh flag, I don't know. My dads dead, he was Welsh and Irish and of smidgen of Cherokee, I really don't got no blood family (that I talk to anyway), so it would be a nice reminder, etc. I already got a 3 leaf clover for my irish in me. Which I was gonna get covered up, as every time I go to jail people treat it as an AB tattoo, which I am NOT (actually I am an ex-punker, which I guess is the opposite,  :) ). I also got a Rastafarian flag on my leg. But I never got it colored in. It is the Rastafarian flag with the star of David (I was in love with sublime at the time  8) ), but because it is not colored in, it looks exactly like the Jewish flag, which I am not Jewish or Rastafarian, LOL. But it's all good I guess.  :)

By some terrible dark force,
I was failing my World History course.
When in a part of town quite shady
I met what you would generously call...a Lady.

She stood beneath her crimson lamp
And appeared to be a bit of a vamp.
I thought perhaps I would shake my gloom,
So I followed her upstairs to her room.

And there I did receive a terrible fright!
She started teaching me World History by sight!
Tattoos of World Wars One and Two,
Battleships, and maps of lost civilizations, too!

World History I did no longer fail
After learning from dear Lydia by sight....

And by Braille!

This is one of four, and most people do not even notice it. It is a Caborn Welborn pottery design I took off of pottery found in sites here within a few miles of my home. The photo was taken at Moundsville Alabama about 450 miles from where I live. I did the dot pattern myself the old fashioned way (do not try it) It is my favorite of the ones I have and the only one visible at all times.

A Hopi symbol that would make a nice tattoo would be one of Tawa.  I have one of a Hopi raincloud.

On ancient tattoos, refer to photos of the Ice Man of Pazyryk. I have a copy of one of his on my right arm.
