I have read in a book of plants of the northwest that willow bark (from certain willows) was used as rope, string...ect. Has anyone out there used this as a backing, other than decrotive? I might give this a shot with some severely stepped through wood as a test.

I've never used it, but I'd definitely try it if you could find a piece big enough. Likely similar to cherry bark or birch bark backing. I wouldn't trust it structurally, but it would look good.
