Title: Getting Del the Cat to the Classic!
Post by: JW_Halverson on March 06, 2014, 07:03:55 pm
Last year folks went out of their way to make sure I got to the Classic. It was a humbling experience and I spent a lot of time wondering how I could take this and do the Classic PA Thing. How could I pass it along.

Well, I had a windfall come my way this last year and I stuffed it in a mason jar and buried it in the backyard.  I am ponying that windfall up for seed money to see this thing off!  So folks, think about how cool it would be to bring Del the Cat over to the Tennessee Classic!  Imagine the clash of culture as a funny talking foreigner tries to talk bows with funny talking southerners (all this coming from a funny talking almost-Canadian).  That should be worth the price of admission, in the least! Heck, we might even get a great article in P.A. out of this!

Airfare is about $1,200 and I already have the first 25% IN HAND - IN CASH! Do you think we can do this, I do!

Go dig the spare change out of the couch cushions, empty the coffee can of nickels and dimes, go sell a pint or two of plasma, and let me know what you can chip in!  Send me a private message and I will keep posting a running tally.

I will pitch in a shiny bit or two.  Let us know how to.  Paypal might be the easiest way.

JW:  How much time do we have?  If the knife thing works out maybe I can make a canteen to auction also!  I will be in Africa during this years Classic which makes me sick inside so would have to have the canteen done long before then.  They do take several days to make  Joe

No, I don't have a PayPal account. How hard are they to set up? I imagine they take a bite of every apple that passes thru...how big is their bite?

Title: Re: Getting Del the Cat to the Classic!
Post by: osage outlaw on March 07, 2014, 11:15:34 pm
Its not hard to set up.  You link it to a bank account.  I'm not sure what percentage they keep but it isn't much.  It makes transferring money very easy.  A few clicks on the keyboard and you can send whatever you want to a person.  When you receive the money you can choose the option to put it in your bank account.  It takes 2-3 days to actually make it into your bank.  I opened a new checking account at the credit union and use that for paypal.  I wanted to keep it separate from our main account for safety reasons.

Big thanks to those that are chipping in.  Going to open a second checking account at my bank and them establish the PayPal account.  Should have that up and rolling early next week.

PayPal takes 3%.   It is one of the most secure payment options on the web.  But like hedgeapple pointed out grandmas dont need paypal.

I'm in too.  J Dub, let me know what you figure out for money transfer.  If your bank has online banking and supports email money transfers, that's probably the easiest for me.  No bites taken from the apple either.

Has anyone asked Del how he feels about this?
Title: Re: Getting Del the Cat to the Classic!
Post by: JW_Halverson on March 08, 2014, 01:31:36 pm
Yup.  I talked to the Cat about it.  The Cat purred a lot and rubbed up against Mrs. the Cat, made sure he caught extra mice for her and he got a kitchen pass!

Mr The Cat now has a Cheshire cat grin a mile wide!

Yup its real easy to set up a Paypal account and send invoices to the people that want to contribute. Once you have the account set up in Paypal, click on the part that says "request money" followed by "create invoice" you can email this invoice to anyone of your choosing and once they receive it they can pay with a credit/debit card or their Paypal account with a click of a button. This money will then go into your Paypal account and can be transferred into your bank account easily. Let me know when you get it set up. I'm in for $75 send the invoice to elijahjfreeman@gmail.com

Don't know if I'll make it myself but even if I don't I am a firm believer that good deeds come back full circle.

I am a firm believer that all deeds come back full circle and I am desperately trying to get things balanced back out.  That's why when that windfall landed in my lap last summer I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it.

When you send money with paypal, as long as you click "sending to friends and family", and you are using the money in your paypal account or your bank, it shouldn't charge you a fee I believe. If you use your credit card to send money, or if you click "paying for goods or services", I think then it will charge you a fee. I do agree with opening a separate bank account for paypal, I wouldn't link it to my main bank account. First Financial, if yall have that bank where you are, still will let you open an account without the monthly fee or direct deposit, most banks seem to wanna charge you if you don't have direct depost anymore it seems.

I didn't get to the bank today, due to a minor emergency involving a golden eagle.  Things are looking up for the eagle, and I am going to try shoveling out early tomorrow morning to get it done.

Yesterday it was 70 degrees, today it was mid 60's.  Tonite rain will turn to snow about midnight and we are expecting 6 inches.

I am having a heck of a time figuring out how to set up this PayPal account.  On top of that, it didn't recognize the phone number, so I can't verify anything until I see two little deposits and withdrawals in the account, then I gotta email them the dollar amounts of those transactions, etc. etc.

Is there anyone able to help me get this set up?  I am at the end of my chain on this and about ready to shoot my new laptop with my old .62 flintlock!

JW if you give out the email adress on your Paypal account then people can just send money and check the box that says "send as gift".  Paypal doesnt take a percentage out of it sent that way.  If you create an invoice they definitely get a percentage.  This would save you time on creating invoices and save the whole cause money.  There will still be a record on everyones account of what they sent and a record on yours of how much you received and from who.  Just a thought for ya

The price of airline tickets will be going up the closer we get to Del's flight times, and I'd like to buy the tickets soon.  I checked flight prices the other day and they had dropped about 15%.  I'd love to take advantage of this.

If you are holding out to the last, DON'T!  If I can buy the ticket in the next few days, we'll get a great price.  We have just a bit over 50% raised, we are on the home stretch folks!

Without your help and encouragement I don't think I'd have the cojones to make the trip.
I actually booked flights this morning. I'll bring along the Copper Primitive Archer sculpture as a shoot prize or to be raffled or whatever you guys think is most appropriate.
I'm really excited... just hope I can get some longbows within the maximum bagage limit. Knew I should have made a takedown.
Thanks again. This site and you guys are simply the best

I think I should be ok for a couple of my shorter longbows (I have one that's only 70"), but I'll have to trawl through the airline small print.

Del, 3" or 4" PVC pipe with end caps makes a good straight bow travel case and you could put quite a few longbows in it.
I'm looking forward to meeting you at the Classic.

We are really doing great on getting up the frogskins to fly Mr. the Cat over for the Classic.  Killir duck is keeping track of the tickets for the knife and I am getting schooled on how to run Paypal.

Don't forget that Madcrow is offering of of his madskills walking sticks, custom made to match the recipient's height.  If you are interested in that raffle, send me a p.m. with your email, how many tickets ($5 ea or 5 for $23, 10 for $46, etc), and your height.  Alternatively, you can also send personal checks or the like to my address, p.m. for details.

I'm really humbled guys, can't thank you enough.
I've managed to work out how to pack 3 bows into a length of square drainpipe and still be within the allowable baggage dimensions... Oddly I can get 'em in 65mm square pipe but not 68mm round pipe :o gotta make some end caps now :).
Do I need gaiters to stop all those snakes you have over there getting up my trouser legs or biting my ankles?
I'm going to need cosmetic surgery when I get back to get the grin off my face.

J.W.; You should be getting my check either, tomorrow, or Saturday.  Del, forget the bows, just load up with as much English flint as you can bring. ;) :) :)  Besides the baggage Apes at the Airport will just take turns trying to break them.  You can trade for a bow, at the classic. ;)  Or at least for a good stave. ;)  ;D  Have a safe, and enjoyable trip, and enjoy the Classic.  Never been there, can't afford to, and at the moment even if I could, I could not, because I have to go to Montana, and take care of cleaning up around my house, and being there, when some Friends go out there.  One day, I will try to make it there.  Everyone that has been has just been raving about it, and wanting to go back.  I do believe that you will be thoroughly overwhelmed, and treated as quite the royal guest.  Of course it may seem like that, but I believe that local crowd will just crowd around you to hear you speak.  "He shore do speak funny don't he?"  Yep, he don't talk so too pretty good as we'uns do. " But he is a nice fellar.  Makes sum nice bows too.  Wonder if'n he brought any of that dark flint they have over thar in angland?  Like to try a piece er that, fer a arra head, or knife.  Wonder if he's ever had any shine?  Wal, gol darn, lets, get im sum!"  "I like when he says, "Oy, Mate, you got another ale?"  "Thet thar, jes tares me up!"  "Yep, I thank it were wurth it to brang him over here.  Seems to be enjoyin hisself."  Yep, that "thar were a good idear, that ol Boy, J.W. came up with!" We gotta see about getting that German Feller over here now."  Hey wouldn't that be sumthin to hear, with them two trying to talk together?!"  "Oh, and whut about that there Dutch feller, that makes the slingshots?"  Oh yeah, Del, I think you will be holding court quite well.  You can drop into a bit of Cockney, and confuse the heck out of them. ;)  Or throw in a bit of Welsh! ;D ;D :o ::)  Have a great time, I know everyone that is going is looking forward to meeting you.  Oh, the beer, here is MUCH cheaper than in England!  Also Pappy has connections! 8) 8) 8) 8)  You can do the mile, at the classic.  It will be in somewhat of a circle, but nonetheless it can be done!  ;)  ;D :P

There isn't any decent flint where I am, mind I have visted Grimes Graves which is a spectacular neolithic flint mine. Don't think they let you dig it tho'.
I used to live near the South Downs which is all chalk and flint, lots of flint pits in the woods. Flint napping is on my gotta do list.

I gotta say, I am more than impressed by how everyone has helped out with this project.  Big kudos to madcrow, killir duck, and halfeye for coming up with prizes to raffle off.  All three of them volunteered to donate these items AFTER they found out about the project, I wasn’t arm twisting them at all beforehand.  Says a lot about their generosity and character.
We will have raffle tickets up until midnight, Monday the 31st of March.  You still have a chance to get those tickets, $5 each, 5 for $23, 10 for $46, etc.  No limit!  And it’s often said the late tickets are the lucky tickets!  Send me a p.m. with which item(s) you want,  how many tickets, and your email address.  I will handle the rest.  If you don’t want to mess with Paypal, let me know in the p.m.  and I’ll send you my mailing address…and trust the check comes in the mail for your tickets after the raffle is over.  Follow the links to each of the three raffles:

We are getting his plane ticket paid off, that will save him from too steep of out of pocket expenses.  Thanks, once again, to everyone for helping pull this off!

Del made it to the Classic, had a blast and is on his way home with lots of tales to tell.  8) It was a real pleasure to meet and chat with Del.

He's a character, that's for sure. I thought he was going to go light weight on us the first night till I got him out of bed. ::) :D After that he was a whirl wind of motion having a "cracker of a time", to borrow one of his sayings,(imagine the funny accent). ;)

so did he get into any shine?  I mean the real stuff, the good stuff, not the stuff you have to cover up with cherries, or peaches, or whatever.  So does anyone have any pictures of him, and of the classic in general?  Glad mullet got to go, and not Turkey.  I had some Friends go to turkey on Vacation, a while back.

Yup, I got some 'shine... I was careful not to drink too much.
JW brought a bottle of red wine witch we shared at the pot luck dinner. I found it a great aid to making decisions about tillering.
I had a tricky knot I was worryin about, but after 1/2 bottle of red I just rasped that bad boy off
You guys were great and there is no truth in the rumour that I was payin' any attention to the ladies even when they teased me by sayin' Rendezvous in the warm honey drawl ::).
I've only just get back so I'm a bit jet lagged. I'll post some pics later... all the goodies I was given got through customs ok.
"No Sir, that's not real fur, nor real horn... no that flint ain't sharp...
The arrows? Nope they're blunt... couldn't hurt a fly with that little toy bow Rich gave me O:) "
To many good stories to recount here, but Cody made me laugh when the were handing out the prizes. Some kid called Zak won a prize...
I said, "That's a cool name, I used to be a Zak when I had all my hair"
Cody said..
"Now you're more of a Bob" ... Gotta say it in the right accent, but you guys know how to do that.
Del (the Bob... cat)

Glad you made it home safe and sound, Del. It was great meeting you and I really enjoyed our little chats over the weekend. Looking forward to seeing the pics you took and hearing some of your tales.
I was even jet lagged when I got home and yesterday and I didn't even fly.  ::)

It was great meeting you Del, and listening to your stories about beating up on a mouthy "champion archer" at a range were very entertaining.  I really like seeing you shoot the 40 yard bales as the guy with the very loud contraption was keeping an eye on you as he shot close by.  That clanker he was shooting was loud!!  Glad you're home safe and hope to cross paths again in the future.

It was great to meet you Del. I enjoyed your lesson on drawing a war bow. Your yew longbow was a real art piece.  I may see what I can do about getting one of my kitty quivers across the pond.

There was a photo shot of Del along with as many of the folks as we could find that had pitched in to help get him "over the pond".  I think Mike Moore from P.A. shot it.  Maybe we'll save that shot for the article.  >:D

Del was certainly the belle of the ball.  Everyone wanted a piece of his time.  As for someone that was nearly crippled with jet lag and subsequent lack of sleep, he took it all in stride.  He proved he was a gentleman of the first cut, through and through.

I wanted to get a photo of me kneeling before him with him tapping me on the shoulder with a big ol' rasp so I could say I had been knighted....it just wasn't in the cards.

Thanks to all of you that helped make my plans work out, thank you to everyone that worked hard at making Del feel comfortable and welcome.  If I ever had a doubt about the class of people that this forum encompasses, that doubt has been slain. From deep in my heart, thank you everyone.  You folks are the greatest people on earth!

Cheers, yeah, that thing he was shootin' sounded like a car crash every time he shot!
When I did that 5 shots from one spot challenge thing. I figured that if I couldn't hit 'em, I'd at least miss quick and with some style ;D
I hit 4 out of the 5, but not in the kill like you guys, I was just happy to hit 'em ... shows the difference between you real hunters and the UK.
Mind if there had been some mounted French knights as targets, I might have done better ;)

I was just thinking how I had gotten over not being able to go this year....til I read this thread and looked at all the pics taken while you guys had a whale of a time. Now I'm feelin sorry for myself again. I am so glad the trip turned out well for Del and my hat's off to you, JDub and the rest who helped make it happen. I know one thing for sure. I am already planning the trip for next year.  ;)
