Title: rawhide n' buckthorn
Post by: bubby on March 21, 2014, 04:11:26 pm
I just finished this up, rawhide backed buckthorn, 62"ttt and 54#@ 28", stave was a little wonky and I tried to match the reflex that was natural on the bottom limb but it came out twice so I figured it wasn't meant to be, I got the stave from badly bent thanks greg, she shoots nice and smooth and is pretty snappy, thanks for looking, bub(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/Cubs%20Football/buckthorn/101_4469_zpse0ad4e18.jpg) (http://s623.photobucket.com/user/bubncheryl/media/Cubs%20Football/buckthorn/101_4469_zpse0ad4e18.jpg.html)

I thought I posted this pic, I used the rawhide because I noticed some dings in the back, this stuff is a bear to chase a ring on, stained the whole bow with golden oak stain and then used some walnut stain and a balled up plastic bag to get the pattern on the back, tips are mulberry, d-97 string 10 strands, buckthorn is a pretty wood and easy to work, as long as you're not chasing a ring  I want to thank greg for the stave she sure was worth the effort (http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/Cubs%20Football/buckthorn/101_4468_zps8a19071a.jpg) (http://s623.photobucket.com/user/bubncheryl/media/Cubs%20Football/buckthorn/101_4468_zps8a19071a.jpg.html)

yep it's shorts weather been in the hi 70s to mid 80s for several weeks, if I want to play in the snow its a 60 min drive

Sweet Bub. That bow may be the best work I've seen done with buckthorn, I know you earned that one chasing those bad rings off the back and man that thing does look a whole lot cleaner than it did when I sent it. You got good draw weight out of it too and I like the braced and drawn profiles, looks like it's a nice shooter. I handed Pearly a similar stave last summer that may have been a sister to that one, we'll have to see what he comes up with when he gets
up the gumption to start chasing rings on it. Of course he's just a youngster compared to you so chasing those rings will be much less work for him. ;)

thanks Bob she is a bit of a thumper
jordo, shat up >:D
thanks Donald, brian I haven't worked cascara yet so cant compare i'll have to get one from you and see, I did just weight it and with the rawhide, leather grip and the string it weighed 15 oz., so 62" ttt and 54#@ 28"i'm not sure how that works out mass wise, but the back is soft like yew and the belly works real easy with hand tools

Bubby, sweet bow first off! I was hoping to pick your brain about the rawhide backing. I'm currently working on a Osage bow that I backed with rawhide. It developed a pretty nasty splinter on the back, so I did what needed to be done. Did you thin the hide once it was already on the bow?  how thin did you go? And what works best to thin it? Thanks
Title: Re: rawhide n' buckthorn
Post by: bubby on March 25, 2014, 11:58:50 pm
Thanks lefty, I didn't thin it it was pretty thin when I put it on, seems to me you could sand it down of it's real thick, what did you use a dog bone chew
Title: Re: rawhide n' buckthorn
Post by: Lefty8917 on March 26, 2014, 12:09:02 am
I did use a dog bone. Seems to be working well but it has some thick spots. I've been using medium aggressive files and sand paper. Just didn't know if there was a better method. I really like the stain finish you did. Id like to do something similar.

Post by: bubby on March 26, 2014, 02:49:11 pm
that stain job is pretty easy, I stained the whole bow and let it dry a while, then get a contrasting dye it can be lighter or darker, and put some on a old bowl or container, put on some gloves and take one off those disposable plastic bags and wad it up in your hand and dip it in the stain, I then dab it on a pc of cardboard a few times, then start dabbing it on the back of the bow till you get the pattern that you want, take a clean rag to wipe up any collateral staining on the edge of the bow, that's how I do it hope this helps, bub
