My good buddy Mr. Hippy gave me a set of old gnarly yew billets at pappys 2013. They didn't have any sapwood on them and the best I could tell a po'ed beaver ate it off :D. This wood must have been quite old as it was a very dark brown color, some of you seen them in person and others seen pics before I started. Over the last year Ive tinkered with them here and there as there was a lot of work involved and not my typical "few days" bow. The rings are microscopic so a proper decrown couldn't happen. I spliced them together and carefully leveled the back off until it was a clean surface, which was at least 3/8" stock removal. I then heat straightened and floor tillered the bow without bending it too far as I was afraid what may happen to the back being unprotected. I added 3 layers of whitetail back sinew and hide glue. I let it sit for 7-8 weeks. I then Tillered it out and added some very nice diamondback water snake skins Mr Scott Stanberry gifted me, thanks buddy. The overlays are wood Mr. Buckeye Guy gave me, cant remember the species? Feel free to enlighten me on that fella's. I must admit, this is the first bow that has allowed me to rest, I honestly don't feel like Im chasing that perfect bow anymore....ahhhhh....
Stats:
60" ttt
1 1/4" wide
50 @ 27"
2" reflex
tips are under 3/8" wide
14.97 oz. complete with a string
Thanks for looking, and as always feel free to comment, good or bad. I posted a ton of pics, many similar.

I always keep it high and tight Adam, military kid. I kept covered right up down there fishing. I wear fishing pants and long shirts with a big brimmed hat. That sun scares me! I have lily white German skin!

I don't have enough yew experience to know what each darkness level means, but these suckers were dark when I started. And, truth be told that sinew acts like it wants 28". I can feel her asking for more. Im tempted to give her want she really wants.
-
Very nice bow, Pearlie. 8) I've got a few sets of yew billets I need to get together.
-
Nice all the way around!

Boy, thats nice man, real nice! So is yew becoming the new osage for ya?
Never my friend. Osage is King, long live the King!
But......this yew stuff is easy on the arms and tools. Im sure it will be my "old man" wood, God willing.

You know where my shop door is Mister!

Don
It does well at 50# Don. I was shooting some 680 grain sourwoods last night at 30-35 yards for fun. Those suckers SLAMMED that target. I have some 480 grain barrel tapered cedars from Warpath that scream from it as well.
-

Real easy to do Jackson. A flat rasp and Loctite Professional is all I use. Rasp the tips off on a suitable angle and keep the rasp FLAT. Be sure the surface is flat, don't sand it, and glue your overlay down. Wait 15-20 minutes and shape it.
-
Wow man. Great job. That thing looks like a screamer. Love it. Was that the one in the rafters? Sure did turn out great
-
Thanks Matt. Yes, that's the rafter bow!
-
Great looking bow PD!! Looks like a shooter
-
Dang pearly, that's gotta be one of the pertiest bows I've seen in quite a while, it's just super clean and smooth.
-
Woof. That thing is clean. Glad to see you got some sun but didn't get singed!
That bow is really just perfectly pretty, Chris. Great one!
-
Awesome bow!!

drop dead gorgeous pearl. :o

Now aren't you glad you didn't hard back it?
Not bad kid, not bad at all :D
-
Thanks for all the kind words fella's, I appreciate it very much.
-
Now aren't you glad you didn't hard back it?
Not bad kid, not bad at all :D
I am! I can back a bow with sinew easier and cleaner than I can a hard backed bow.
-
Yes Sir!
That's a Keeper!
Love everything about it...
Liking them DiamondBack Water Skins better the more I see of them... :)

Must have a bad nose bubby!

Great looking bow Chris. I am working a yew bow now that will be getting sinew and was wondering how wide to make it. I have it floor tillered and the heartwood looks like it will be thinner than I would like. Mine is wider than your 1 1/4, so I think I will make mine a bit skinnier and that should help. Or maybe remove some sapwood since I will be putting sinew on anyway?
-
Im no yew expert Bob, but Id suggest ridding the bow of all, or nearly all of the sapwood if you feel you can. It doesn't do anything beneficial once the sinew is laid.
-
I will do that.
-
Man that's a sweet bow. Love the looks of it.
