Title: bamboo ipe recurve......85% perfect
Post by: dragonman on April 17, 2014, 10:50:16 am
Hi Everyone, greetings from Wales, land of the dragon. (not me, its the national emblem). Havent posted for a while, but heres a new bow to look out.....
Its 64"n-n....bamboo backed ipe,  with an oak power lam and maple kerf joint inserts to make the recurves.. Its 58lbs @ 27"  The bamboo is glued in 2 pieces cut from side by side in the pole to assure symetry, I found this works better than one full length backing strip....much better infact...bows need much less tillering after construction.
It was glued up with 5" recurve and reflex combined and settled at 4 1/2", which I was very happy with...one of my nicest. smoothest bows to shoot ...feels smoother than the reflex deflex bows I usualy make.
Maybe its perfectly timed?? but I doubt it.   O:).......actualy there is a very slight string misalignment on the one tip.....the upper limbs are a tad too narrow for this design...but it doesnt seem to make any noticeable difference

Dave

That is a very cool bow! I love the way you did the tips and induced the reflex. Nicely tillered too.

Awesome! How did you make the kerf for flipping the tips? With the bandsaw? Does the kerf taper or is it parrallel?

Never seen a construction like this...

Greetings Stefan

Very nicely constructed. Well done! I like that kerf bending you did with the tips. I've done something similar in an ash flatbow, but that one was only 82% perfect. How come your bow is 85% perfect? Where does this figure come from? ;)
I like the handle as well. Smart use of a powerlam to keep the bend away from the glued on handle, and the bamboo joint. It makes sense that two sister pieces of bamboo are easier to tiller. As long as you have a stiff handle, the seam in the bamboo won't matter.

And wow, your rosemary looks big and healthy! In full bloom already.

Very nice looking bow. Seeing the unbraced pic, I haven't expected the smooth lines in the braced and f/d pic.
Maybe your nocking point is a bit high?

thanks for the comments

simon, I'll see what happens if I lower the nocking point, thanks
darksoul;  the 85% was just my twisted humour, in response to a previous thread about perfection , that you must have missed
stefan; I only use hand tools on all my bows, they're more accurate and controlable IMO.....and the maple slats where planed with a slight taper to stiffen the tips...

Hey Dragonman!  I love that bow!   Nice job all the way around!  As others have said those kerf bends are really cool.   I love the contrast of light and dark wood and the tiller looks great too!  Good job!
