hi all just thought i would post some pics of a 50" osage static recurve i am building. i have put about 7 whitetail back straps sinews on it 2 week ago i have reverse braced it to gain some reflex, i had it drawing to 20" before sinew. i am gona put another good layer of leg sinew on it too. it is just over an inch wide and tapers to half inch knocks, how much reflex would be to much for this bow with having statics? i dont wana ruin it as its the only osage im likely to get hold of. heres some pics cheers.

really like the bow by the way, sweet little recurve
-
Sweet start Danny. Looks a lot like the first osage static I ever made, except I didn't back it with sinew.
-
i would defo be up for some osage if theres any going to come over the pond, ;D cheers chris i cant wait to shoot it but got a while to wait yet :( gona put the rest of the sinew on tonight when the missus goes out(dont tell her im using her kitchen) >:D
-
Nice danny! Yeah I got nabbed in the kitchen just last week. Anxious to see this one all finished up.
-
Really nice looking bow! Where did you get the osage and all the sinew over here in England?
-
cheers for the comments just put the last of the sinew on now all cleaned up and the missus aint even back yet :). i got the osage and sinew from someone over on bushcraft uk forum. dwardo on here got one stave which hes posted the bow on here somewhere. he did a great job. i got this small stave which was all he had left. i would love to get some more one day its nice stuff.
-
Well I'd I cut these trees maybe I'll put something up for the uk guys to pitch in shipping if it could work out. I'll have enough
-
Good start on a nice looking bow. As far as your question on reflex, I've never made a 50" bow, shortest one for me was a 60"er I just finished. I started with about 3" reflex on that one.
Again nice looking bend....

blafair that would be great. im sure there would be people interested. dbar with the reflex on a static do i measure from a flat surface to the nock? the recurves are about 3" and then the reverse string has raised it another inch or so so does this bow have 4" of reflex? could i go further or should i just leave it to cure naturally and see where it ends up? sorry for all the questions i have no experience with sinew, reflex and how much i can get away with without wrecking a bow
-
I may be wrong, but reflex is the distant the end of the bending portion of the limb is behind the handle.
After looking at the photo, it was more like a little more than 2" not 3"
Here is the reflex I started with.........next time I'll add a little more.
-
ok thanks for that. i just assumed it was from a flat surface to the highest point which would be the nock.
-
Danny, you are correct, just place the back of your bow against a wall and see how far your handle is from the wall. Reflex and recurves are combined.
-
Thanks Badger for clearing that up.

Measuring as Steve pointed out, Id start with no less than 6-7" on this bow. It will lose well over a third, and still look great unbraced.
And......the center 1/3 of the right limb is stiff.. ;)
-
Looking good. can't wait to see it when it's done.
-
That bow looks like a stunner.
My self and a few others would definitely be interested in Osage for the UK. I put up a post a while back but there didnt seem to be many takers.
-
That's looking great man. Can't wait
-
That's great work a perfect little bow!
I'm UK based also and would be definitely up for getting some bowdarc over here! :)
-
cheers for comments and help everyone. that right limb has been a pain all the way. you cant see properly on the pics but there is a slight bump just out from the fades and its played havoc with my eyes, i will sort it out once the sinew drys.
-
We do measure all the backward bends and add them up but it is better to actually look at your bending limb area and see how much reflex it has on its own to really get a better picture of what sort of work that area is doing.
