Title: My first finished bow
Post by: Don Case on April 30, 2014, 04:13:29 pm
This is actually the fifth bow I have made. The others are still in one piece, they're just not worthy. I hope this one is. It's Ocean Spray, 60" NTN and 48#@27". Ipe tips and some kind of old leather jacket grip. I'm not even sure it's real leather. I'm thinking the brace height could be higher, it's only about 5". It's finished with clear acrylic. I should have stained it a bit.

Don, congratulations...Your getting some bend out of that 60" stiff handle. You mentioned stain but I like the natural color and character 8)

really good first bow,nice work!
5" brace can slap your wrist pretty nasty, try experimenting with the brace.
Almost all bows have a "sweetspot" and you will know if you find it. ;)

Thank you all very much!! I'm on Vancouver Island. There is lots of OS here so I will be making more of them. I increased the brace a bit. I just measured it. It's 5" now so I will increase it some more. I am going to make a wrist guard cause after a couple of whacks I'm a little bruised and gunshy. I'll get rid of it after I sort it out. It seems to shoot where I point it but I know nothing about archery so it's a steep learning curve ahead. It took me a week to build up to full draw. I just wasn't strong enough to pull 48#.
Thanks again for all the compliments
You've made my day

Good job Don. I was a bit surprised when I saw it was your first. I brace my bows at 6 to 6 1/2" mostly because of feather clearance. 5 to 6" would have worked on some bows but feather clearance has always been a nagging issue to me.

Thanks again everyone. I hope I didn't lead everyone astray, this isn't the first bow I've made. It's actually the fifth but it's the first one I've finished. The first one worth showing off. See the first post of this thread.
Thanks again
Don
