Title: Take down red oak board bow / with thinned down Eiffel tower tips
Post by: fiddler49 on May 05, 2014, 12:31:33 am
I found two nice riff cut red oak boards from Lowe's. 2 1/2" x 48" x 1/2" thick. I made a riser/handle from a broken hickory bow. Cut off the limbs just past the fades and over lapped and bolted the oak boards on to the handle with 1/4" bolts and wing nuts. The limbs are 35 inches long with a 3" over lap at the handle. Bow tips were boiled for an hour and reflexed. Handle glue line popped while tillering so I wrapped with mason's line and hit it with super glue. The bow is 72 lbs @ 31" 75" ntn , Shoots great, I shoot with a thumb ring and my draw length is 31". Here's a few pics cheers fiddler49

Awesome job! I had ideas of doing something similiar soon, so I'm glad you walked that path already! I've been having issues finding a perfect 6' piece of oak and thought a takedown would be the ticket, and you have proven that!

Can you elaborate on the limb dimensions (width, taper, etc.)?

Thanks.

Thanks lads, The boards from Lowe's were 2 1/2" wide x 48" long x 1/2" thick and riff cut. The bow limbs are 35" long and overlap handle 3" inches. The working limb length is 32 inches. Overall length is 75" ntn. The limbs start to taper about 13" from the tips. Handle is from a broken hickory bow and about 12 inches long. cheers fiddler49

I thinned down the bow tips to an Eiffel tower profile and put my monster hickory molly next to it for a side by side comparison. The red oak limbs are shooting fantastic!!!!!  cheers fiddler49
