Title: Nicholson rasp question
Post by: osage outlaw on May 09, 2014, 11:33:22 pm
Does anyone use a half round NICHOLSON Black Diamond 17751 Cabinet Rasp 12" File?  I am thinking about getting one of these but don't want to waste my money if its junk.  It says made in Canada.  I know the Brazil Nicholson rasps are garbage but I don't know anything about the Canadian version.

Got one.  She's a wood hogger and won't turn her nose up at taking skin either!

If you get one, play around with changing up your angle of attack.  There is a sweet spot where the teeth line up and leave very little in the way of marks yet still remove wood aggressively.

I use the same rasp. Same as what JW_Halverson says.

Dont you worry about canadian quality. We infuse everything with a little maple syrup scent which keeps the edge on the teeth longer.

You may find that the rasp doesn't work right if you are measuring the bow in inches.  Convert to centimeters and millimeters and the rasp will start working again.

I went ahead and got it.  I'm kind of worried about the rasp trying to argue with me all the time.   ;D

Lmao!  Now that's funny right there! ;D.  I wouldn't worry about it too much Clint.  The majority of them will probably be well mannered and useful.  If you happen to get the argumentative type, just go find a couple more like it, throw em in the corner and watch the show!  Cheap shop entertainment there!  >:D Josh

Oh..... :D

I wasn't implying that Canada made products are poor quality.  I know that the USA Nicholson files are good but when they went to Brazil the quality went downhill bad.  I just didn't know anything about the quality of the Canada files.

Lol,  all in fun, like some of us we just skip thru the threads.  Missed the one about  " I'm kind of worried about the rasp trying to argue with me all the time. "
But on the other hand I will Argue with you if ya want......... :)   Do us Canuckanucks like to Argue..?  We all joke around about people in other parts of the country, its what makes us Americans.  Sure I'm Canadian but in truth we are all American and proud of it.  We make moon up here to, race stock cars, roast hogs on the fire and all that good stuff. Not enough Bowyers though....... :(

We go for quality instead of quantity when it comes to bowyer's. You guys can "borrow" Gordon, but don't kid yourselves that he's really one of you. ;)

 >:( The Brazilian shit ain't American but not as worthless as you are trying to make it sound. It plugs up quicker than the earlier version but if the wood is dry stead of wet the rasp doe's  it's job..
I've got a couple Brazilian 49's that work fine so quit spreading rumors.

I'm not trying to spread rumors.  I've used the exact same model rasps side by side, one American made and one Brazilian made and I could tell a difference.  That's my experience with them.  You may have better luck.

Now you know why Marc's bow looks like they do, he is just doing the best he can with the tools available....;)

I have both an American version and a brazilion version. I prefer the American but the Brazil model still works fine. We have a place nearby that sharpens them with some kind of acid treatment I think they will also retemper. I have been planning to send mine in but have yet to do so. The lady on the phone claims she does the nicholsons all the time and customers claim they come back better than new.

You can take your files and rasps and resharpen them by annealing them, soak in Muratic acid and then heat temper them again. There is an older gentleman that does it near me and they come back sharp.
