I have a customer that makes solid glass preforms for the fiber optic industry. Chemically, it is silicon tetrachloride but they call it glass and it looks like glass. They have huge dumpsters of it that are broke during the process. I am not a knapper, but would be interested to know if this stuff would work. I do not really want to mail it as most of the pieces can be large or irregular shaped. Would anyone in the Atlanta area be interested in meeting up and I will give them a few pieces. Currently, they give it to a table top manufacturer that breaks it to pieces and lays the pieces flat for the "broken tile" look. PM me if interested.

I bet it is knappable. I think that's the stuff guys knap w/ a respirator on though. dp
-
Deffinantly knappable! And can make some beautiful points and blades if your into glass.
-
I've knapped some pretty points out of fibre optic. I wish I was close to you.

Thanks for the info guys. I did go grab a few pieces. There are bins of these type of pieces.
-
Is there any with color?
-
It is all clear.
-
That's different than any I've seen. I was thinking colored flat plate. Guess we'll see, hmm.
-
Yea, not the stuff I was thinking of, either. Can you hit a piece and let everybody see how it breaks?
-
Very cool! Interested to see.

I'm in a hotel for 2 more weeks before the move. Let me get settled and I'll see what I can do....unless anyone in the Atlanta area would be interested in these pieces to play with.

Jeff;
I'll give it a shot. Just let me know what you need and how to get it to you.

Emory Coons has a beautiful dagger blade, he knapped from some yellow fiber optic glass. He also had a flash light that he put a piece of fiber optic glass in, and it would produce a very hot light. He has friend who worked in one of those factories once, and he made the lens for him. It was the clear stuff like you have. Yeah, that is some good stuff. You might see if your friend can make you a flash light lens. ;) Emory had a big mag light. I wish I could get up to Atlanta. At the moment I am cleaning out my house, as I have it sold. YEH!!!!!! So am busy with that. How much longer are you going to be in the Atlanta area? I have to go up to Ga. to buy an enclosed utility trailer, around the first of June or so.

Well guys, I got a Med. Flat Rate of this stuff from Jeff today and I think I'm going to be real happy with it. I hit a piece and it ran long flakes real easy. I looked at the end of one of them that had been sawed and it was iridescent silver. I'm going to saw some this weekend and see what happens. If not, I don't mind clear points, they ought to make some pretty necklaces and ear rings.
Thanks, Jeff.
