Title: Snaky Osage with Extra Snake
Post by: SLIMBOB on June 19, 2014, 09:07:28 pm
Oklahoma Osage and Texas Rattler.  It was love at first sight on this snaky stave.  Lot's of character but the tips weren't more than 1/2 inch out of alignment.  For those that were at our Texas Bow Bust, this is the stave I was chasing a ring on there.  Fairly high degree of difficulty with this one but it was surpassed by the fun factor.  The skins came from Cipriano and they were perfect!  2 young snakes with vibrant colors, but paper thin.  They would tear if you looked at them wrong, so I didn't.  Just smiled at 'em a lot.  Thanks Cip.  The odd thing about this one was how quickly it fell into place once on the short string.  I have said before that I typically string mine when they are way heavy.  Low brace of 2 inches or so.  I just find it easier to get the limbs in sync with a string on it.  Evened every thing up, increased the brace to 4 inches or so, put it on the tree, and it was done. Only very minor tweaks here and there after getting it to full brace height.  Lastly, as a bit of a confession, my last few bows have not shot as well as I would have liked.  I have spent a good bit of time improving my finish work, but it has come at the expense of the shootability I think, and so my goal on this one was to first get it shooting right and then tie it all together with the finish.  This one shoots as well as any I have on my rack.  Better than many of them.  Thanks for looking and here's the specs...
Osage
64 inches ntn
1 3/8 inches wide at the fade with a slight taper to 1 1/4 inch thru the middle third, and then aggressive taper to 3/8 inch at the string grooves
50 lbs. at 27 inches
WDB skins applied with TBIII
Sinew wraps dyed in black food color and applied with hide glue
Buffalo Tip overlays on top of plum
My second John Strunk handle, thanks Pearl.

Amazing. Would it be too much trouble to get a front on full draw? :D

That is super awesome! Very well done and I really like the braced pic. As well as the way you used the snake skins like an accent and not the full length of the bow. Very nice! Patrick

Thanks bubby and Badger, Crogacht, lebhuntfish, rps3, Will H, tattoo dave, Carson, bow 101, Greg, and TRACY.
Clint, thanks man.  I would like to nab that thing at some point for sure.  The number of high quality bows being turned out each month, it's a tough challenge as it should be.
Thanks Rich.  I'm following your build along.  Great stuff!
BTW, I left this bow shiny.  5 coats of Tru Oil and a top coat of gloss Poly.  My wife threatened to kill me if I covered the shine up on it.  I figure I can hit it with a matte finish a little later.

This bow has it all!  That's a bow of the month if I ever saw one.  You did it right brother - building it to perform first and then dressing it up is the right way to go.  I like the way the snake skins are cut short enough so you can see more of that yellow wood.  Really looks great Slimbob.

Superb bow Slimbob! Remember to leave that thing at home when we go camping. You'll wake to find it in small pieces if it's anywhere close to my sleeping bag!   Curtis

I do like the bow Slim,,,,, but the rabbit in my shave kit was a mean trick. Scared the crap out of me. I thought I had ahold of a huge rat when I reached in there.  CC

That was in retaliation for you telling me to put Benzoin on an open blister.  I nearly passed out!  I still hurt from it.  But hey, what are friends for without the permanent physical impairments.  :)

Thanks Howard and Pappy.
Thanks Chris, the only guy on here, hell the only guy I know that insists on calling me by my given name.  :)
Thanks Scott, Jon W, Curt, Tallpine, Ryan R and NeolithicMan.

Crogacht, appreciate the compliment.  Understand that it is just wood and there is plenty of it around.  Doesn't require any special talent or tools, just a determination that you want to do it, then read everything written on the subject and start making shavings.

Hunterbob and peacebow_coos. Thanks guys. Masterpiece, nah. I like it a bunch for sure, but room for improvement.  Been shooting it almost every day for a few weeks. I think it's the quietest best shooting bow I've made in a long time. Just dead quiet. That's the most impressive thing on this one. Thanks again to everybody for the nice comments!

ha that one turned out nice slim. I'm fairly certain that there's a fair amount of my butt sweat in that bow! Cause your poor clamping table wasn't gonna let you chase that one without someone sitting on it.
