So here is my very first creation. This is a Red Oak board Bow. 54# @26. 69 inches ntn, with Purple Heart tip overlays, and a 3 piece Mahogany lam handle. It has about 2 inches of set. Artificial sinew string. 6 coats of Antique oil. I have learned a lot from this build. Thanks for all of the advice. Items I feel it is important to mention. Tools, Don't skimp, the right tools make the job so much easier. I completed this entire build with only hand tools. I was at a 30 inch draw, but I glued on tip overlays and cut a half inch off each end. It also has a buckskin Handle wrap. Thanks Tyke.

Congrats, so how's it feel to get a shooter

Nice man, treat yourself to a nice stave now!
-
Great job. You will always remember your first shooter :)

... with Purple Heart tip overlays, ...
From all the tip overlays I have done PH was the only one that caused problems.
An overlay split in a way that was not to be expected. To brittle!!!
Horn or bone or antler.
I'm using mircarta most of the time now cause it's simply the best - but truly not primitive.

PS:
It's a very nice first bow, certainly tiller is not perfect, but leave it alone and build your next one. Yes, do a stave, that will be a great learning process.
You may want to post pics of the tillering process, and the guys here will lead you through it!

What's wrong with the tiller? Looks pretty darn good to me.

The tiller is off on the right limb. I had problems throughout the process. I posted a lot of photos through the process, and looking back, I wasn't even close until the very end. What I found with the Purple Heart is that it is HARD. It took quite a long time to file in the notches. My dyslexia got the best of me on the serving, as it is backwards, that I can fix. It has very little hand shock, and is shooting well so far. About the next project, I have a nice Osage stave (Thanks Fred Arnold) that I have just finished cleaning up the knots on the back. Thanks for all the kind words. The bow was a learning process, and was a good tool at making me more humble about my skills. There are some design issues, and I feel those are more to blame for the right limb bending different. All I can do is take the lessons learned and not forget them. In the end if nothing else I gained knowledge, and a great respect for those of you who are true craftsman. Plus, I ended up with 2 draw knives, a Farriers Rasp, a Spokeshave, a Sureform rasp, and knowledge that can't be taken away.

Good job on your first bow, keep building and keep learning because if you ever think you have stopped learning its time to quit.

Excellent first shooter. Yup even if you give away or sell all of your bows you have the knowledge of how to make another which is worth more than money.
Good job and I bet there will be plenty more to come.
-
Great job on that first bow, no way to compare with my first ...
-
Joe, Looks much better than my first attempt by a long shot. Great Job.
-
Nice job, waaay better than how I started, probably better than where I am now.

Didn't say something was wrong, I said it's not perfect. I'm not perfect either, so feel free to tell different.

No need for anyone to get testy :-[. I know it isn't perfect, and I didn't take it as a jab at me. Thanks for all the reviews. Good bad or indifferent. They all help. It is shooting well. I reserved the string with some serving material last night. More shots to come.
