Title: Short Osage hunter
Post by: TRACY on July 23, 2014, 10:44:26 pm
Here's a little Osage stave that held together to be a shooter. I've never made one this short (barring kids bows) and felt like I was making a bow for the first time :D. I'll be hunting with it this fall. I backed it with a road kill  black rat snake in front of my house. Five coats of tru oil and leather handle wrap to finish it up. It's a snappy little bow.

51" ntn
45lb@ 22"

Thanks for looking!

Looks real good Tracy, those short bendys have become my favorite choice for a close range hunting bow. Hope to see you take a deer with it this fall. :)

Thank you for the comments Clint,Sasquatch, swampman, Tim, Pappy, Joe, Chris, 4dog, slimbob, PD,Greg,Ozzy, and Matt ! Much appreciated.

Blackhawk and PD, you're correct. I told Danzn bar and Ozzy over the weekend that the hardest thing to get use to was drawing it to its fullest without feeling like it was going to break. When I shoot it I'm getting 24" draw. I don't have any cane shafts short enough for the bow so I need to make some two fletch up for it. Totally different style of shooting a shorter bow for me with  an "air" anchor point.

Shooting short bows takes some getting used too.  It is sort of an instinct style of shooting, just draw, point and let go.  I like shooting this way, I am not much of a draw anchor and release kind of guy but then my accuracy could be better also, I don't shoot as much as I should.

Be careful now man. After shooting that bow for a while when you pick up a longer bow you will wonder how you ever handled such a long bow.  :)

Nice job Tracy.

Nice compact bow, just the job for hunting in the bush.
Not that I know, can't hunt in the UK :(... mind this morning our toaster gave out so may be I'll hunt that when Mrs Cat isn't looking. I just love shooting electrical appliances ;D :o.

Thanks Jon and Soy. Going to be strange shooting a 64" at first.

Bummer on no hunting del :'(. Like your target there. Got any pics of a cell phone like that? I'll show it to my students and tell them that was a phone I took in class last year >:D

Very nice little hunter there!
And yes, I'm with Chris + Chris, 2-3" more should be possible.

Nice bow, I love the shorties. I still anchor to my lip for short draw, but flex my bow arm. I paint a ring on my arrows so I know im getting them to where they should. Cheers

Thank you T- Rob, hunter bob , and Eddy! It will definitely work well walking to a stand or still hunting. The snake skin does have a real good pattern and contrast.

Looks like a turkey thumper to me, all ya need is a brush blind and a willing turkey. Nice save on the snake skin. Everyone I have seen dead on the road have been a bit gamey.

Thank you Keith! I bet it would thump a gobbler, if I could find one during season that didn't have 6 others trying to whack it first ;D
