I was wondering if any of you other yankees would be interested in doing another one of these? I'm not sure how to coordinate something like this or if we simply use this thread as a springboard and people could go from there. The idea started for me at Elm Hall gathered around our "northern" fire. I remember thinking how much talent and camaraderie there was and wouldn't it be cool if we could pool it for a common goal. Just a thought, let me know what you guys think. Cody
-
Kinda like this one Cody? I finished it at home. But the bulk of the work was done over the 2013 Elm Hall weekend. Pappy was the last to sign it last weekend. Now I need to slap on a final coat and call her done.
-
Sounds like fun Cody, I'd be interested. After Pearly started one last year at Elm Hall I wanted to do the same again at Marshall but then I always get to the gatherings and am more interested in the shooting, visiting and taking it easy.
I end up just watching other guys work when I get near the bow shop. When guys like you, Paul, Pearly and Blackhawk tear into a stave its just fun to watch.
-
Yea, somthing like that that we can maybe ship around to different people and have them do a little work on it. Not sure what would get done with the bow when its done, maybe donated it to the twin oaks raffle or something like that.
-
That sounds like a cool idea. Can't wait to see what comes of it. That bow is looking good Chris and everyone else who helped. Is that the elm sapling?
-
Cody, I'd sure love to be involved, so if this idea takes off count me in!
-
sounds like fun...I d be willing to take part- Hammertime
-
I wouldn't mind taken a scrape or two on it...................if I'm far enough North?? Louisville KY ??? back in the civil war KY was... I think neutral??? ??? ???
DBar
-
Cody, we have done a few Community Bow projects here on PA a few years ago. One year we had a North vs South. I think we donated those bows, one to National Turkey Federation and the other to Rocky Mountain Elk at their National Conventions in PA's name.
These are fun projects and raffling it off at Twin Oaks is a great idea. Looking forward to following this. 8) Heck, there are quite a few of you Yankees that can make a pretty good bow, even if it's just whitewood. >:D ;)
-
OK, it sound like people are interested! We have to figure out how many people will be involved and what each person will do. Also have to figure out what to do with the bow when its done. Input?
-
What would bring in the most revenue for the cause, a raffle, or selling it at an auction and donating the proceeds?
-
As long as ya don't let me tiller it I might be interested... :P
-

All talk, no show >:D
-
Im still feeling damp behind the ears but if you guys wouldn't mind me I would like to throw my hat into the ring!
-
Just don't tell anybody, " there's no rush", like we did with the Friendship Bow ::) :D.
-
RUSH RUSH RUSH ;D
We need: someone to donate a stave,
someone to rough out the bow and bring it to floor tiller,
someone to reflex it,
someone to tiller it ::),
and several people to finish it depending on how elaborate we want to go.
So, whatever you want to volunteer to do. I can do any of these but if we need to get the ball rolling, I could donate the stave.
-
cool idea cody maybe next year we can do an east coast west coast
-
Id like to do the heat work to it.
-
And, I nominate Greg to do the art work :).......... Your it Greg! HAHAHAHHA!
-
Cody..if u donate the stave and pearly has to heat shape and correct it, then you better pick the nastiest cantankerous out of alignment crooked piece of crap stave ya got >:D
I'll rough it out and bring it to floor tiller ;D
-
I can do any stage, but could do final sanding and finish just let me know-Hammertime
-
If its a style that calls for artwork then heck yes I'd like doing that part, Tillering would be to much pressure for me
unless we wanted a girly weight bow. I'd gladly do just about any other phase of the build as well. Also have staves
of varying quality, some of it might be good enough to be suitable for this. Anybody have a idea as to which wood species we want to work with?

Osage >:D
-
OK, I have some decent staves in my stash. When I get home from work tomorrow I'll dig through and find a "good" one and send it to bad Chris for rough shaping, that is ,if no one else has one to donate.
I noticed that no one has volunteered to do tillering. If nobody does, I'll take the challenge :D I think that whatever bow we build should be able to be drawn 28" with meat to spare. We can go stiff handled or bendy, guess we will have to leave that to Blackcaulk.
If anyone has tip overlay material, leather for the handle etc. feel free to donate.
Cody
-
Super cool fellas!!! I'm looking forward to seeing this bow.
Tattoo Dave
-
I'd like to do the tip work and/or skins if it calls for it.
-
I've been involved in a couple community projects here years ago. One of them didn't turn out so good but they were all fun none the less
-
"Blackcaulk"
Haa haa ha. I like that. Nice to have friends, huh.
-
::) ..... ....ya know pearly n I have talked about getting "Bad Chris" and "Good Chris" shirts to wear at shoots n gatherings...lol  we all know which one I am >:D
I know there's no rush on this...but with the folks involved I think we could have it done by the classic..and then have the last person to work on it bring it,then everyone who had a hand in it can all go shoot a course with it together? ??? Then raffle it off on the raffle table for the fine folks at twin oaks ;) ...just an idea since Cody mentioned the raffle table?
-
Ill donate leather and buff horn. Fun-fun!
-
Sounds good to me! :)
-
You could send it my way and I could look at it for a few hours a week, and work on it about half that. And after working on it 20 hours realize that I need to take about another 3/8 off of it to make it bend... Just a thought.
-
OK, found a good stave last night. Has a bit of a R/D in one limd so maybe we can get the other to match.
-
I can dig that Cody. Ill match it right up, and then add more reflex!
-
This should be interesting to keep up with. :) :)
Pappy

Ready when you are!!! :)
-
OK, stave is shipped to blackhawk. Should be there Sat. Have fun :)
-
Looks like I need to go get my new heat gun sooner than later.
-
I'm eager to see how you shape her (bad) Chris, post some pics buddy.
-
I planned on it Greg ;) hopefully I can lay out a 84" bow with it >:D ...lol
-
Are you sure 84 will be long enough to hold up to this crew ? !
Have fun!
-
I'm watching this ............ ??? ???
-

Well I hope Chris at least posts a pic of the stave before he starts working on it...since SOMEONE didn't post a stave pic! :o
-
Sorry! :(
-
Ship me 84" and it'll be 66" when it leaves my shop!
BTW Greg, Im the "Good" Chris and I'll be heat shaping the ol' gal.
-
It was about 71" because of shipping I wanted to keep it below 72" or the rates go really high. Its a pretty clean do anything with stave.
-
After Bad Chris leaves it at 71' and sends it to Pearl Onions and he cuts it to 66',.. send it to me and I'll make it 57" >:D
-
You'll cut all the good reflex out old man!
By the way guys. We may as well make this thread official and post pics. Bad Chris you better snap a photo FOR CODY before you let the beaver out the pen ;)
-

It actually doesn't have that much anymore because there were some bad checks in the reflexed end. Bat you can change that right Chris? ;)
Greg, Paul and I were talking and after you are done putting reflex in it send it to us and the three of us will try to tiller this baby.
-
Oh Ill get a sexy profile for you guys to play with. Better get you tillering hats on boys!
-

Better off not having not having dry fire Chris tiller or do the leather work >:D
-
Ha!!!!
-
::) ..... ....ya know pearly n I have talked about getting "Bad Chris" and "Good Chris" shirts to wear at shoots n gatherings...lol  we all know which one I am >:D
Neither Good nor Bad....although I might suggest Luda Chris.
FOR CRYIN' OUT LOUD, PICS GENNELMEN! Some of us can't read!
-
You will have pictures tomorrow J.W. thats when it should arrive at luda Chris's ;D ;D It sthe nicest looking piece of basswood I had.
-
The "stave" has arrived...the mailman dropped it off right before I left the house....I'll get some pics up this eve when Bob comes over to do some things...wait till yins guys see this "thing" >:D
-

-
Wow... I'm speechless!
-
What is that....old pine from a pallet used for hauling scrap iron??? >:D
-
Nice!!!! Im itching to get after that.
-
Wow. Now that's what I call intimidating. Can't wait to watch and learn. Who is doing the tillering on that beast :). How many people are working on this thing and who is doing what. I know bad Chris is floor tillering and good Chris is heating. But that is the only thing def I've heard
-
Glad to see ya took it easy on the boys Cody!
Don't look like it will even need any heat corrections !
-
I think it got damaged during shipping! :o ;D ;D ;D
-
SUCKERS!!!!! can't believe y'all took the bait >:D
Here's the REAL stave Cody sent 8)

-
thats more like it.
-
Whew, thought I was gonna have to drop out of participation in this project when I saw that first pic. The real stave looks much less intimidating, tear into to hawkster.
-
Either one would be good by me! I was thinking Cody was VERY generous to let a stave like that snake go.
Matt BC is laying/roughing it out, Im shaping it and floor tillering, and maybe gluing some horn on for tips. Then its getting sent to Chicagoland to have the rest done. Pauly, Cody and Greg are all in the same neck of the woods.
-
That first one looked a lot more interesting
-
If ya'll need anything let me know...I was gonna offer to do all the sanding, but no sense shipping it back to MI if the tillering and finish work are being done in Chi-town.
-
I was wondering when you might step in Drewsy. It doesn't matter where it ships back and forth from. Its still $18. Or, we can both work on it at my place. Maybe that ginger from the west side will come over for an afternoon to.
-
Man them are both very nice looking staves. :)
Pappy

Yeah alittle late to jump in, I MIGHT have mule deer on the brain at the moment! I can do either, just let me know!
Dunno about that ginger dude, I think just developed a serious new obsession with the dark and monster brown trout. 8)
-
I got a busy week this week,n I'm gonna be gone this weekend...but I'm gonna try and fit this in this week if I can,and ill post pics of its progress....I think it would be safe and wise for me to let it sit upstairs in my house for a week or two before I ship it to pearly to let it lose any moisture left before pearly goes cranking the heat on it to avoid any checking issues...I do this with any blank I rough it in most cases..i always let it sit for a couple weeks at the very least before I heat it up...besides ...what's the big rush...we'll have her done before the classic right guys? ??? ::)
-
is there any chance that little gnomes may finish it while its up there?
-
Since there seems to be quite a few people who want to get involved with this and only one bow, what if we were to add some accessories such as a quiver, some arrows, arm gaurd etc. just a thought.
-
Good thought.......again, you little so and so. "Northern Community Primitive Archery Kit" rather. I like the sound's of that.
-

...loincloth, moccasins, uncut mustang stallion without horseshoes and only a hackamore braided from rawhide....
-
The only Mustangs up here in the North are made by Ford O:)   >:D Bob
-
Good idea on letting it stabilize Chris,if it was mine [jmo] I would seal the back also before I started heating, just a little
insurance on such a nice looking piece of wood. May not need it but it can't hurt. ;) :) :)
Pappy
-
I Made a loin cloth on Friday. It worked great, until you turned to the side... :-\
-
That's the plan pappy...I always seal the back after I chase a ring asap regardless of how old the stave is... ;)
Ughhhh....just found out I'm working 12+ hour days rest of the week at work...this is gonna have to get put off till next week :-\

You dont have to be involved if you dont want to Chris, no ones twisting your arm. If your intimidated by the stave, you could always send it to PD and he could do your job. ::)

Eddie you are so far South you are almost North :) :)
Pappy
-
Eddy us Buckeyes are a breed of our own , not really yanks or rebs , more like rebellious yanks!
I will be in what they call the confederate camp this weekend at the big knappin at Flint Ridge state park
We will have a blast there for sure
Wonder if Bonepile is coming up this year you should catch a ride with him sometime Eddy
See y'all next week
-
Yea, Roger is going to be there. I do need to make that one at least once, Guy.
-
This northerner would be happy to have you contribute what ever you'd like Eddie. What you got in mind brother?
-
Greg, thanks for the invite but that was Guy asking about being too far south. My plate is way too full at the moment.
-
Oops. I misread that Eddie..... Alrighty then, what we gonna assign Guy to? (or) What would you like to do Guy?
Anything you wanna do is cool by me. :)
-
Got the ring chased today 8) ...I shellaced the back, and I'll lay it out n cut it out some time later this week for sure...I'll post some more pics again after lay out and cut out :)

-
Looks good from here Chris. Thats a do anything with stave right there! :)
-
drew a center line and lay out lines on it..i think im happy with it,but ill prob sleep on it and come back to it tomorrow to cut it out if I still like it..heres some shots of both limb halves and a few close ups...I think were gonna have a 1/4" hole in the bow 8)

for some reason I had a hard time drawing straight lines in a few spots
-
Nice. Where does that knot lay?
-
It looks good from here. I think that bigger knot will be a few inches past a fade.
-
6" from a fade ....I placed both knots equal distance apart from center, and that also gave me the best handle placement as well....not sure if its static recurve worthy tho ...there's a undulating bump at one tip from a knot underneath off to the side that I don't think I'd wanna try and make a severe bend at...plus with that dogleg, prop twist,n some mediocre bumps it will make it kind of a pain to align everything up,and will take multiple heatings(not something I personally like to do) to get it tracking just right...theres just too many signs telling me to make it a more simple flatbow and not a recurve or molly for that matter either...I'll be able to see things even better once I cut it out,but I think keeping this more simple is the better route for all ;)
-
Looking good Chris, glad it's in your hands for the layout. It's not a wild stave but always a few things to carefully consider, good layout determines a lot about the outcome. Looking forward to seeing that back profile cut out.
-
Flatty it is. Do it up saw master 2000. Ill bend it over my magical caul and the boys in Che-cago can get her bending nice. Ill floor tiller before I ship it along. You guys need horn for tips? Or maybe you have some.....:)
-
I still have plenty if that is what others want to do.
-
I vote horn tips too....smexy they are 8) ...I'll leave a lil more meat than normally do off the saw to make pearly sweat a lil ;)
-
Good looking piece of wood, looking good so far. :)

Chris sweats sitting in the shade on a beautiful 65 degree day! ;D
-
:-[ So do I
-
You got that right Cody! I sweat 10 months out of the year. Me and heat? We haint friends.
-
Looking good Chris. Looks like it's gonna have just enough character to make it interesting. Can't wait to see the steps from different folks. I like this idea.
-
Finally found time to cut it out..sheesh!!! :-[

-
Looking good from here. Nice to see there will be at least one hole.
-
Sweet!
-
Looking good. Can't wait too see good Chris do a heat session on that thing. Great work on laying that thing out Chris. How narrow is the handle?
-
I think I laid out the handle at 1 1/8" wide matt ??? ::) ...can't remember as I drew the lines ten days previous to cutting it out
-
Sweet!
My parts done...your up next pal ;). I'll get her sent out to ya by the end of next week :P
-
Ill have whipped into shape in a few days. Should be an easy heat job by the looks of it. Ill floor tiller it 1/2 way to be sure my added reflex is even limb to limb.
-
That's a nice start, looking forward to watching it take shape. Are you going with reflex only, or adding recurve to the tips also?
-
That is coming along, looking good guys. :)
Pappy

Sweet!

I hope this bow wasn't lost. Any new developments?
-
Haint seen any blank yet Scotty. Im sure the Bad Chris is just busy chasing deer around the PA woods!
-
More like scaring them off with my arrows...lol
A lil extra seasoning time in the dry box won't hurt a thing ;)
-
I believe he Chris said after he toughs it out he lets it set a month.
-
A lil extra seasoning time in the dry box won't hurt a thing ;)
remind me what year did the friendship bow circle start >:D

How bout an update on this fellas? ??? I know some work has been done to it since i sent it off a couple moons ago. 8) ;)
-
Following this project from Down South! You guys are having too much fun up there in the snow. I am looking forward to seeing this one come together and I am already looking forward to buying a ticket for it at the Classic. There is some real talent being unleashed on that stick of wood and I predict it will be something special.
-
Its ready for skins. We tillered it out this weekend. Looking at mid 50's at 29". Pretty slick stick!
-
it's in my hands as of right now. I'm going to shoot it all week and ship it out the next one
-
Can't wait to see it gents.
-
I have a few nice skins set aside and will be making my choice soon. Can't wait see er come together!
-
Scott you will be the next to get it. when you think of it send me a PM with your address and I'll get that tube in the mail in about a week
-
Here are a few pics of Scott's (Stringman) handy work, he added skins to the beast!
We are getting closer to a finished products fella's.
-
KEWL!!!! 8)
-
Ha! Guess the secret is out! >:D
-
Looking good guys
-
took me 2 weeks to get this thing shipped out to you and it took you one day to put the skins on. Nice job dude looks good
-
Lookin good guys.
-
Alright, its out of retirement fellas! Nice job on the skins Scott!
-

Haha. It actually arrived Friday, but I was gone till Sunday afternoon. Skins don't take long to put on.
I took some time to test the tiller on this stick and I gotta say someone is gonna be pleased with this. I know I'm gonna be buyin a ticket.
-
You picked some nice skins to go on that osage Scott, looking good.
-
Just caught up to this thread. Its looking good for sure. Is that bull snake skins? Looks like what we call bullsnake around here. I did one last year.. They look great and with osage it only gets prettier as the wood turns darker.
-
Not bull snake, this is my last set of eastern diamond back water snake skins I got from Cip. They were thin enough to conform to the contoured handle that Cody created and show some color thru them. Still thinking about adding a leather handle before shipping it off.
-
Who's it going to next Scott? ???
-
Who's it going to next Scott? ???
Germany. Scott graciously offered to pick up the tab for that! ;D
-
Haha...
uh really?!? ???
It is my understanding that there is one more northern artisan (Greg) who would like to put some polish on this piece. After that, it should be headed to the classic table.
-
Really, really cool guys
-

Just fooling. Yes, I think Greg might be doing his magic on it next.
-
And here we are so far! Scotty boy did his number to it and its headed off to Greg the artist for finishing touches. Somebody is going to end up with one slick stick at pappys this spring. Better bring some cash guys!
-
That would be money well spent on that fine stick
-
And with the string alignment, this could easily be a lefty or a righty.
-
Ok guys I got the bow from Stringman a couple weeks ago and it's looking good.
I have a couple questions before I go any further on it.
Do you guys who worked on it want me to pen your names on it rather than shipping it back and forth
for everyone to sign? Scott signed it already so he's taken care of.
I want to get it lettered prior to putting the last half dozen coats of tru-oil on it.
I think I can do a fairly tidy job of lettering or I may try to meet up with Cody and have him do it since his penmanship is near perfect.
Also is this a correct list of all involved?
Misslemaster
Blackhawk
Paulsemp
Pearl Drums
DGF
Black Coyote
Stringman
Badly Bent
I'll wait until I hear from you all before I proceed.
She's a sweet bow :)
-
as far as I'm concerned you can go ahead and write my name on it greg. I was glad to scrape away at it but I can't write my name for the life of me. If everyone insist we each sign it I'll be more than glad to. Be a good excuse for you or me to get out of the house for the afternoon. I can't wait to see scott's handiwork to it
-
Yeah you got to see it Paul, the skins and handle wrap Scott did really make the bow pop.
-
I'm aok with that Greg...i hate signing my name ;)
-
Sign away McGregor!
-
WOW that is a beauty. Couldn't expect any less when you put this many talented guys together. :)
Pappy
-
Looking forward to seeing that. Looks amazing.
-
Not trying to poke the bear but hows that friendship circle bow thing going >:D
-
seems to me you got to get a bunch of Yankees involved to get the job done >:D
-
Looks sweet! Cant wait to shoot it at the classic!
-
Hey Greg, my name doesn't deserve to be on that fine stick. I acted purely as a spectator during the whittling. She's looking darn good!
-Dan
-
Ok Dan, I got the same request from Drew. .. but didn't you and Drew look over the tiller on the tree at Paul's gathering and instruct Paul, Pearly and Cody on where to remove wood next? ;)
-
Someone's got to give those lost souls direction.
-Dan
-
I agree. Drew was an immense help to the project. I would go so far as to say that without his active advice, the bow would now be ashes in Pauls stove or an atlatl thrower.
-
Better watch it Cody, I hear Drew is taking private lessons as we speak!
-

I was too dumb founded watching you bend Osage into a shape that no one thought was possible! And keeping Paul's dog busy.
-
Yea Drew, but I have never seen anyone more determined to reduce black locust from a log to a bow with just a rasp! I didn't know where you got the energy! :)
-
Yea, i wanted to jump in with my hatchet. My stove burns chips not dust
-
Oh yeah! I will be buying a chance on that bad boy. Looks great.
-
Are you going to write our real names Greg or our handles, or both? You might run into marginal issues with pearls last name. Koelenicktaschnealckt! ;D
-
Somebody go on a date or what? 😉
-

You must become one with the Shinto young grasshopper
-
I put the user names on Cody Right cause I couldn't spell Semperfeeleeitis.

Sweet....love what ya did with the knot hole, and the other knot. :)
-
Great looking bow. Nice job everyone.
-
Nice job everyone! Proud to have my name on that one with that group of guys. Can't wait to shoot it in a couple of weeks greg. Think im the only one on there that's never been to the classic... will gave to change that in a couple of years
-
Nice work guys, it's a beauty. Do you have to make it to the classic to get a ticket?
-
Put in your order Ryan, I'll be there and get your tickets in the bucket for you. Just let me know in advance
buddy.
-
Awesome job Greg! I knew you'd touch that baby right off, and you did! Great job everybody. That bow looks awesome.
-
I will be putting my money in this raffle jar for sure. You guys did an incredible job with this beautiful bow. 8)
-
Way to go Greg. Way to go everybody! I am glad it turned out! Looks GREAT!
-
Outstanding job Guys! Cool project - Bob.
-
That thing turned out great. You guys did such a good job on it. Very cool to see such a collaboration.
-
I'm sending all my bows to greg for finish art work
-
Ha! The others guys did all the hard work, all I did was letter it and apply the tru-oil. Stringman laid down the skins and did the handle wrap, Blackhawk did the early heavy lifting and Paul, Pearly and Missileboy passed it back and forth at our weekend of bow making at Paul's place until they had it shaped and shooting.
Pretty humbling for me to have a part in it with these guys.
