Title: Northern Community Bow Project
Post by: missilemaster on August 08, 2014, 10:58:43 pm
I was wondering if any of you other yankees would be interested in doing another one of these? I'm not sure how to coordinate something like this or if we simply use this thread as a springboard and people could go from there. The idea started for me at Elm Hall gathered around our "northern" fire. I remember thinking how much talent and camaraderie there was and wouldn't it be cool if we could pool it for a common goal.  Just a thought, let me know what you guys think.    Cody

Kinda like this one Cody? I finished it at home. But the bulk of the work was done over the 2013 Elm Hall weekend. Pappy was the last to sign it last weekend. Now I need to slap on a final coat and call her done.

Sounds like fun Cody, I'd be interested. After Pearly started one last year at Elm Hall I wanted to do the same again at Marshall but then I always get to the gatherings and am more interested in the shooting, visiting and taking it easy.
I end up just watching other guys work when I get near the bow shop. When guys like you, Paul, Pearly and Blackhawk tear into a stave its just fun to watch.

Yea, somthing like that that we can maybe ship around to different people and have them do a little work on it. Not sure what would get done with the bow when its done, maybe donated it to the twin oaks raffle or something like that.

That sounds like a cool idea.  Can't wait to see what comes of it.  That bow is looking good Chris and everyone else who helped.  Is that the elm sapling?

Cody, we have done a few Community Bow projects here on PA a few years ago. One year we had a North vs South. I think we donated those bows, one to National Turkey Federation and the other to Rocky Mountain Elk at their National Conventions in PA's name.
These are fun projects and raffling it off at Twin Oaks is a great idea. Looking forward to following this.  8) Heck, there are quite a few of you Yankees that can make a pretty good bow, even if it's just whitewood.  >:D   ;)

OK, it sound like people are interested! We have to figure out how many people will be involved and what each person will do. Also have to figure out what to do with the bow when its done. Input?

What would bring in the most revenue for the cause, a raffle, or selling it at an auction and donating the proceeds?

RUSH RUSH RUSH ;D

We need: someone to donate a stave,

someone to rough out the bow and bring it to floor tiller,

                someone to reflex it,

                someone to tiller it ::),

and several people to finish it depending on how elaborate we want to go.

So, whatever you want to volunteer to do. I can do any of these but if we need to get the ball rolling, I could donate the stave.

If its a style that calls for artwork then heck yes I'd like doing that part, Tillering would be to much pressure for me
unless we wanted a girly weight bow. I'd gladly do just about any other phase of the build as well. Also have staves
of varying quality, some of it might be good enough to be suitable for this. Anybody have a idea as to which wood species we want to work with?

OK, I have some decent staves in my stash. When I get home from work tomorrow I'll dig through and find a "good" one and send it to bad Chris for rough shaping, that is ,if no one else has one to donate.

I noticed that no one has volunteered  to do tillering. If nobody does, I'll take the challenge :D     I think that whatever bow we build should be able to be drawn 28" with meat to spare. We can go stiff handled or bendy, guess we will have to leave that to Blackcaulk.

If anyone has tip overlay material, leather for the handle etc. feel free to donate.
                                                                                                                   Cody

I know there's no rush on this...but with the folks involved I think we could have it done by the classic..and then have the last person to work on it bring it,then everyone who had a hand in it can all go shoot a course with it together?  ??? Then raffle it off on the raffle table for the fine folks at twin oaks ;) ...just an idea since Cody mentioned the raffle table?

It was about 71" because of shipping I wanted to keep it below 72" or the rates go really high. Its a pretty clean do anything with stave.

Either one would be good by me! I was thinking Cody was VERY generous to let a stave like that snake go.

Matt BC is laying/roughing it out, Im shaping it and floor tillering, and maybe gluing some horn on for tips.  Then its getting sent to Chicagoland to have the rest done. Pauly, Cody and Greg are all in the same neck of the woods.

That's the plan pappy...I always seal the back after I chase a ring asap regardless of how old the stave is... ;)

Ughhhh....just found out I'm working 12+ hour days rest of the week at work...this is gonna have to get put off till next week  :-\

You dont have to be involved if you dont want to Chris, no ones twisting your arm. If your intimidated by the stave, you could always send it to PD and he could do your job. ::)

 >:D     Good one Cody!

Am I to far south to help on a northern kit ?!

 Absolutely not!

I will be in what they call the confederate camp this weekend at the big knappin at Flint Ridge state park
We will have a blast there for sure
Wonder if Bonepile is coming up this year you should catch a ride with him sometime Eddy

Nice. Where does that knot lay?
Title: Re: Northern Community Bow Project
Post by: missilemaster on September 03, 2014, 08:41:37 pm
It looks good from here. I think that bigger knot will be a few inches past a fade.
Title: Re: Northern Community Bow Project
Post by: blackhawk on September 03, 2014, 09:40:51 pm
6" from a fade ....I placed both knots equal distance apart from center, and that also gave me the best handle placement as well....not sure if its static recurve worthy tho ...there's a undulating  bump at one tip from a knot underneath off to the side that I don't think I'd wanna try and make a severe bend at...plus with that dogleg, prop twist,n some mediocre bumps it will make it kind of a pain to align everything up,and will take multiple heatings(not something I personally like to do) to get it tracking just right...theres just too many signs telling me to make it a more simple flatbow and not a recurve or molly for that matter either...I'll be able to see things even better once I cut it out,but I think keeping this more simple is the better route for all ;)

Looking good Chris, glad it's in your hands for the layout. It's not a wild stave but always a few things to carefully consider,  good layout determines a lot about the outcome. Looking forward to seeing that back profile cut out.

Not bull snake, this is my last set of eastern diamond back water snake skins I got from Cip. They were thin enough to conform to the contoured handle that Cody created and show some color thru them. Still thinking about adding a leather handle before shipping it off.

Ok guys I got the bow from Stringman a couple weeks ago and it's looking good.
I have a couple questions before I go any further on it.
Do you guys who worked on it want me to pen your names on it rather than shipping it back and forth
for everyone to sign? Scott signed it already so he's taken care of.
I want to get it lettered prior to putting the last half dozen coats of tru-oil on it.
I think I can do a fairly tidy job of lettering or I may try to meet up with Cody and have him do it since his penmanship is near perfect.
Also is this a correct list of all involved?

Are you going to write our real names Greg or our handles, or both? You might run into marginal issues with pearls last name. Koelenicktaschnealckt! ;D

Yea Drew, but I have never seen anyone more determined to reduce black locust from a log to a bow with just a rasp! I didn't know where you got the energy! :)

You must become one with the Shinto young grasshopper

Ha!  The others guys did all the hard work, all I did was letter it and apply the tru-oil. Stringman laid down the skins and did the handle wrap,  Blackhawk did the early heavy lifting and Paul, Pearly and Missileboy passed it back and forth at our weekend of bow making at Paul's place until they had it shaped and shooting.
Pretty humbling for me to have a part in it with these guys.
