Title: Vanity Mowing
Post by: Zuma on September 12, 2014, 11:29:22 am
I live on a farm that was subdivided. The guy who did the subdivision put
in the covenants that all acerage must be mowed by July first each year.
He is long gone but the HOA still maintains the tradition but they mow twice
a year and bill folks for it unless you beg off the mow list.
They tried baling the hay but folks complained when the bales were not immediately
picked up. So now it's just for vanity.
I guess there is argument both ways. Here is one of mine.
I could see the breathing and heart beating through the missing parts of the shell.
The little guy is in the care of a good buddy who has rehabilitated and cared for these creatures for years.

I agree, I want my whole back yard to be a garden.

Over here, we're blessed, lol! Our yards are all red sand with sparse mesquite and cottonwood trees here and there. Some kind of desert tumbleweed-type plants, goathead thorn shrubs. There's two yards I've seen where they've gotten grass to grow and they have to take constant care of it. You'll see more corn growing in peoples' yards than lawns. Mules, donkeys, horses, sheep, goats, and some cows all wandering around loose. Had donkeys in the front yard a couple weeks ago. If anyone has a lawn in their front yard, they have to fence it. Otherwise, it'll get eaten, roots and all.

But if you had some place here that was setting out bales of hay with a "free" sign on them, they'd be gone in ten minutes or less. Anything that can be used or re-used doesn't get thrown away out here. I saw this dude set up over at this flea market in Chinle who buys old tires. Why? Well, you put those on the roof of your trailer house to keep the near-constant wind from lifting off the roof.

Tim;

Traditional yards in Florida used to be raked sand with chickens .We had plenty of nice, clean,
 crystal clear lakes
 then.

I agree 110% Tim. Mowing is a huge waste of time, fuel , and money. Spraying huge amounts of chemicals and crud is even more insane. I am very lucky two own two zero turn solar powered mower/fertilizer spreader combos , as well as protein producing bug removers. :D Here is a pic of my daughter on one of the zero turns.

I agree with the mowing ,I mow the ditch along the road a a little strip on the side so I can park extras as needed. The rest of my small property is fruit trees and gardens.I have two chickens that keep my shop area free of any and every thing. To bad for the little turtle , down here the roads get lots of them.

My backyard is all mulch and gardens, also.

Up here keeping the yard trimmed serves a purpose, even though looking at my yard you would wonder when was the last time it was cut.  Mosquitoes like to spend the day in the shade and need plant "blood" to survive till a good meal comes along.

I would like to have some goats and chickens. Just not home enough.
Great green and natural ideas folks. Thanks
Marc, mowing around the house to keep down ticks and other insects is proper.
If I didn't mow my shooting lanes, elephants could walk through unseen. lol
Keeping yard grass low minimizes the potential of mowing up a little turtle.
I'm really talking about large unused acreages bushhog-ed for no particular reason.
Baby deer as well as many snakes, rabbits etc. are destroyed without purpose.
The buzzards have a bonanza here when they hog.
