I've been waiting to get out of my garage and into a little more privacy for a long time. I'm in the city limits so this has been some kind of hassle to plan. Been quite a process of permitting, approval, etc.
Finally I got the side yard cleared and leveled. An old grapefruit tree had to go to bring in the shipping container that should be delivered FRIDAY!!! Had to say goodbye to my old knappin' pit but I'll just have to find a spot for a new one.
Gotta put the shipping container down on a bed of rocks for proper drainage and then the whole thing will have to be secured into the ground and strapped for hurricane code.
Once the container is in and inspected then it'll be time to run the power out...
I'll pour a slab around the perimeter and have an outdoor work area with an overhang and bench, etc.
My wife already wants to build a deck on top of the roof with a stair way going up to the top for an observation deck. ::)
I'll post pictures as I go. Here is the prep work...
-
Hahaha, this is awesome! You should get a pool too so you can jump off the deck into the pool. I can't wait to see the finished product!
-
Tim, that's what is inside of the screened Lenai.
-
A spring board would get you to the pool. ;)
-
Cool beans! A new shop is always a good thing. Josh
-
That's great! Congratulations, I'm sure the workshop will bring you many happy hours.
-
That's great Parnell. I'll be looking forward to seeing the progress.
-
Glad you got all of that crap worked out with the city. That's what happens when you live in a town that more Yankees and Europeans than real Floridians.

Good deal,every man needs a shop. ;) :)

No argument here, my friend. The city of Naples is absurd with this stuff and I've got one of the code inspectors that lives down the street. She is a German lady that must have been a product of the old hardliners...you know, "Veee have our vays" type! ;D
I'm counting it down and can't wait 'til it arrives!
Thanks guys.

That's exciting Steve-O!
-
That's easy prep work. Up here any building, other than a shed, has to be supported with a foundation 4' below grade.
-
Get er done man ,I'll come down and help christen it 8)

I'll take you up on that Roger!
-
What are the inside dimensions of the container??
-
The standard container is 8'x20', DC. I would really have like something a bit larger, but wouldn't have gotten it through inspection anyhow with the dimensions needed from the lenai and property lines. No problem, I'll just be building onto it outside once inspection goes through...
-

Tim, that's what is inside of the screened Lenai.
We're gonna need that spring board and open one of the sections of screen. That's gonna be a party!
-
I think we'll have to set up a kiddie pool for you Tim! Ha! ;D
-
Steve, you will have a box full of bows. I wish they were easier to get around here. There are so many cool things you can do with them.

As long as it's like ten feet deep we're good :)

I hadn't thought of that Keith. I wonder what a higher grade one goes for up there?
Down here you can get rust free ones that may just need paint for 1K or less. Miami and Tampa are loaded with 'em.
Was supposed to be here today but I guess the guy is running behind so I'm waiting another day or so...
Damn, I'm antsy.
-
OK, now I feel better about my shop! ;D
-
Alright, man cave! 8) Be careful about taking Bone Pile up on his offer to christen it, I think it was a misprint, I don't think that is what he meant. :P Besides if he "Christens" it, it might start rusting, or corroding! Vell make sure dat you haf der papers, for der final inspection! Just get some PBR schnaps, snitzsel and cheese, and she will sign you off. Then again, she might cite you for bribery, and she will haf vays to make you talk..... Anyway, enough making fun of things that bug us, I am glad you got through all the hoops, and redundancy that is the City government, and have your man cave becoming a reality. Too bad, you don't live in the outskirts of the city. Probably the reason the guy was late with delivery, is he had to shake the illegals out, and wash out the debris that was left. Or make the delivery of Colombian vision dust, first.
Have fun, and enjoy. You could get two or three, and put them side by side, and cut the middle side section out, and have extra width. The Father of a Friend of mine who lives not too far from Eddie, made an apartment out of one, in his back yard. Actually it is his man cave, but it is all decked out, is quite the neat little hurricane retreat.

Great idea, Parney! Can't wait to see the progress on your shop.
-
They were delayed last week Matt but I've been given the "promise" ::) of it's arrival either tomorrow or Friday. I hope so. I think the weather is supposed to start drying out a little down here which would be helpful!
As soon as it's in I'll post up!
Good to hear from you Matt. Send our best to Heather and family.
-
If you don't me asking how much did it cost you?
-
You can get one around here for around $1K that is in good condition (little rust) but would also need a paint job. Delivery is additional.
-
Still waiting :)

I've been told noon today, Pap!!! It should be in place when I get home. The day can't go fast enough.
-
We'll be waitin' too!
-
Ohh wow can't wait to see it that's so cool
-
Saw the picture you sent Steve, glad you got it. That's nice. For some reason I couldn't send a reply back.
-
Mullet, you should paint it flamingo pink for him the first weekend he is away.
-
LOL :D
-
It was a very fun weekend. Got it placed properly and all that really has to be done is the hurricane rated strapping system that gets screwed into the ground.
Started in with some shelving inside and getting some things painted over the weekend. The room will get eaten up quickly, so I'll be picky with organization. More to come...
-

Maybe that will be the name of it...The Flamingo Inn. Ha!
-
Looking good thus far, looking forward to seeing more inside. :) Yep you are right about room,it goes away very quickly :)

Organization is a good thing.

I have a quick question - won't that get REAL HOT during the Summer ? Hope You have AC in the plans. Being an old Truck driver - I know how hot trailers can get in the Sun. Bob

It does get hot but I've got a torch and my buddy is a builder keeping an eye out for an external door that I will install so that I don't have to always open the big double latching freight doors. Definitely will install a window, ventilation, a basic dehimidifer maybe and an a/c unit for sure. I'm going to plant some contained bamboo clumps that will quickly grow to shade it out, also.
-
We use one of these at work for paint storage. As per OSHA >:( regulations it has to be ventilated and such. We took Styrofoam insulation and insulated half of it on the inside, and built a wall and door in the middle. It stays about 60 in there year round (heated in the winter). It is on the West side of our truck shed, so it is in full sun most of the afternoon and evening. I have thought about buying 4 of these to make a cabin.
-
I read a while ago about some guys who got a bunch of these together, outfitted each as a mini-metal shop. Mill, lathe, break, bandsaw. Sent them to Africa so communities could build sugar boilers or some damn thing. Always was trying to think of something similar to do, drop in shop for someone building a home, or some such. I think it will make a neat shop.
-
I guy I grew up with down here has a Business that makes these into portable office buildings that are delivered to Construction sites. Fully wired for phone, computer and A/C. He just started building some with kitchens, bathrooms, for two room houses/cabins. From the story in the paper his business is doing real well.

What a transformation!

Eddie, the guy we went with is having a hard time keeping up with demand and definitely needs to expand his business.
It is absolutely a growing trend. So far, I'm very happy and am really looking forward into making it what I want. Heck, with the generator I've got that I'm settin up out there, I've got my hurricane proof hideaway.
You could buy 5-6 of these for hardly any money and build a fortress. I'd partially bury them for insulation. Be pretty easy to get off the grid with 'em.
-
A few years ago there was a video on the net of someone building their Mountain getaway in NC. They buried two of the real long ones side by side and then connected them from the inside. The transformation as they built it was amazing to watch.
-
If I remember right the Backwoodsman had an article about it awhile back
-
They're such a good idea that our city council banned them inside city boundaries. ::) ::) ::)
-
Go figure? Not enough tax money or inspection trips for them.
-

Same thing is going down here, DC. When I was getting the prints for mine passed the licensing office started putting out a notice that they are suspending applications for these.
Is it possible to fix stupid? I think not... ::)
-
Watched the vids. Awesome! Are you still going to put the observation deck on top? Heck, on top would be a great place to put a knapping pit along with the small deck.
-
I'd put a table, umbrella, couple of flamingo's and it would be Margarita time ;D

I like the way you think Eddie! It'll be fun.

First fire of the season and first painting inside.
Gotta come up with names for the shop. Any suggestions?

Ugh! Clint, that may be a winner! ;D

Ditch Lizard Lounge.

Up here people completely get around any and all codes by building on a base with wheels. Then it counts as a non-permanent mobile structure.
People build miniature hoses in backyards with this loophole.
Be interesting to see how long they can get away with that though.

Miniature hoses for watering small flower beds?
How about calling it the Tin Teepee?
-
Ha! Both good suggestions.
I had to laugh, on the local news last night they were doing a story on these containers and how much sense they made. They highlighted several businesses in the area that are turning them into structures of all kinds for various purposes.
Small business store fronts, tail-gaiting huts, offices, etc.

How bout the dog house...seeing how you'll be now spending all your time in there and the wife won't be happy your spending more time in a shipping container than her...and you get thrown in the "dog house"....sooooo...don't forget to put a couch in there too ;)

Genius Chris!!! Genius!!! ;D
I'm going with my Hennessey hammock for sleeping quarters. Easily put up and down with the strapping system already in there.
Good suggestion!

That's funny, Chris. When I was working on the big Drill Rigs we used to call them Doghouses. It's where we ate and kept all of our tools.
