Title: On a serious note, could use some prayers.
Post by: JW_Halverson on October 13, 2014, 10:41:10 pm
I blew out my lower back this evening and the chiropractor thinks I may need more than he can offer.  Must be serious, generally a chiropractor will claim they can do all but raise the dead.

I am in some pretty serious pain.  I wrecked my back in my 20's and am used to constant pain, but this pegged the meter well above the red line.  I am icing it and eating pain killers like popcorn in a horror flick.

On the other hand, maybe the surgeon will completely remove my spine and I can get elected to political office.

You shouldn't be chasing mice, let the birds catch them!  Ask your Chiropractor if he knows of any Chiropractors that have the DRX9000?  It is a miracle worker.  It is a computer operated spinal machine, that very slowly separates the column and creates a vacuum, and pulls in dislocated discs, and re hydrates squashed discs.  This is the new computerised version. They can target  specific discs.  I swear by it, and have seen a great difference, in my back since having treatment with it.  It is definitely worth a visit to a chiropractor who has one.  They are very expensive, so not all Chiropractors have them.  Check around, it is definitely worth trying that route first before going into politics. ;)  Good wishes on the way.

I can sympathize with you, John. A few years ago I was down for 3 months after sneezing during my morning constitution. Ice and Ibuprofen was my friends. I've been dealing with back problems for 25 years, now. You are in my thoughts my friend. Take it slow and easy.

Jerry Sienfeld is taking care of Izzy Mendelbaum/Lloyd Bridges.
Should I see if I can get Jerry over your way.
I thought you would forgo the painkillers for a bullet or a stick.
Back surgeries are leaps and bounds better these days.
Pray you don't need one. Get well soon.

I seriously urge you to look into the "Richway Biomat"

they are expensive ( but as always you get what you pay for)

As a pretty reckless serious waves surfer I did some real damage to my body, I had incredible pains lasting years, ever since I bought me one of them mats Pains have gone, energy level is up, overall I feel rejuvenated.

Can't put a price on health !

As a fellow back sufferer I can relate. When my back went out the last time, just standing in the kitchen trying to fix a bowl of cereal had me squalling like a baby from the "shark hook" in the back pain, I was desperate for relief.

I went the DRX 5000 route with an actually honest chiropractor. He said 15% of his patients had drastic relief from the treatments, 25% had some relief and 60% had no relief.

The treatments were enjoyable, especially having the pretty young gal give me a back rub with electric stimulation after I got off the machine. Did it work, no, the treatments did make me aware of just how much of my flexibility I had lost over the years.

After spending $1800 on treatments I decided to aggressively take on the issue by myself. I researched L5S1 rehabilitation and made up my own set of stretching and strengthening exercises. For the first 6 months of my self induced rehab I couldn't tell much difference, then things started to change. I found my back and neck had become very fluid in in movement. Twisting my trunk had been painful in the past and was now easy and pain free.

My back never goes out like it did before. Now I feel a little click when I do something stupid with the same pain as a mild head ache which brings me to the rest of my story. I discovered the "Roman Chair" piece of exercise equipment. I read in my research that some back pain suffers got relief from using a Roman Chair, I thought "what the heck is that". I found pictures on the internet and realized my gym had one of these contraptions.

My back had taken an excursion from normal and I got on the Roman Chair at the gym, dipped down and heard a "click" from my back. After doing 10 reps I got off the machine and noticed I was pain free. The dang thing popped my back into place. Since my initial introduction to this miracle machine I have popped my back into place at least a dozen times over the last 10 years with it, even bought one for my home when I couldn't make it to the gym.

My routine consists of M-W-F at the gym with the focus normal he-man stuff plus belly and back workouts including several sets on the Roman Chair, total time for my routine, 45 minutes of actual weight training and another hour or so of drinking coffee and watching all the 20 something flat belly gals going through their various exercise programs. Tuesday and Thursday I do what I call my floor exercises, L5S1 rehab exercises at home that takes me about 20 minutes.

This sounds like a lot of stuff to do but I have been doing it for the last 26 years and it is part of my life now, my PAIN FREE life.

You could carve out a new spine from osage. It would be durable but folks might call you yella.

Thinking about you. Back pain isn't fun.

I'd also get a 2nd opinion from another chiropractor. Not all chiropractors are created equal as I have once again found out since the horse pile up a few months back. As of last Friday, my left arm is doing better so I'm gonna try your bow again and work my way up to my wicked little half-eye bow. Right arm still has "issues" so if I need a gun, I'll still have to shoot lefty.  8)  Hives still have honey on. Mikes back is out, so both of us needed to take boxes off (finally) this week.
Roman chairs are our friend.

That right there was so funny it was almost worth the pain of laughing!

Two adjustments today, loads of walking on natural grass in bare feet (walking helps "set" the adjustment) and I am feeling a fair bit better.  Enough better that I hand sanded a 54" hackberry D bow that I found in the corner of the shop.  I then spent a little time doing the painting technique that Rich/half eye taught me.  All this with as little sitting in a chair or standing on concrete as possible.

I can tell the muscles are in spasm, but the alignment is much better.  Ice, ibuprofen, and light duty is the order for the week.  I am not allowed to handle any of the birds larger than a screech owl for the time being.  Fortunately, about all I am doing is some training flights with the kestrel.  Since he is a whopping quarter of a pound, his landing on my hand is no great strain.

Thanks everyone, I swear I could feel the prayers.

Back pain sucks. Found myself flat on my back at the ripe old age of 30, with sciatica caused by arthritis. Pain all the way down my leg to my toes. Apparently that is as bad as it gets but Im not a surgery candidate because I am too young?? My Chiropracter wont do adjustments when it flairs up. He says that while adjustments wont cause any problems, if he does one while the swelling is already pinching the nerve, it could compound the problem and make it a whole lot worse. Alternate heat and cold, Deep Cold is great, dunno if you guys have that stuff in the States... I hope it feels better soon and I will be praying for you.

For sure, some back ailments have nothing much to do with the condition of muscles in the back area.  But many are.
As the years somehow vanish, we lose muscle conditioning because we don't do the type activities that build/retain strength & balance.  Rebuilding muscles can usually be done, if we're committed to doing so.  In my case, it was cycling that changed my life.  Others have described what they did.
Best wishes to a full & speedy recovery!
By the way, John, your humor has brightened several of my days!!

I have two bulging disc, lumbar 4 and 5,which has plagued me for years,  and in my neck 1 and 2 which is minor to me. After the Hip Replacement 3 weeks ago I have been pain free in my lower back. I wish I had done it years ago.

And, personally, I think Chiropractors are Snake Doctors. Just my opinion, I've gotten more relief from Acupuncture.

I read a book by a MD, Dr. John Sarno about dealing with back pain.    He stated that if anyone over the age of 25 had an MRI an orthopedic surgeon will find a bulging disk that needs to be operated on...but that is his job.  Dr. Sarno's point is that everyone has bulging discs in their back but not all of them cause trouble. My back problems come from a bulging disc between L4 and L5 and that pinches the sciatic nerve when my back goes out. A few years ago when I was down for 3 months the sciatica was so bad I had to go to the emergency room to get relief.  Even today my left leg is numb where the sciatic nerve crosses across the font of my shin and lower leg.

Being a tall guy and been none too gentle on my body means I know about back pain.  Been to the doctor many times for it and one doctor told me years ago that it was the swelling that actually caused the pain, I've been keeping prescription anti-inflammatory pills on hand ever since

Hope you get better

Know what you mean, Pat. The pressure on my nerves gave me "Drop Toe", three years ago. I now have 15% opening around my nerve column. You can ask Pappy and the Guys about me 4 years ago hunting Twin Oaks.  :)

I think the Hip Replacement has greatly relieved some of the stress on my back.

You guys probably already know this; When I stopped putting my wallet in my back pocket my sciatic nerve problems got much better. My fat wallet had me sitting cock eyed with more pressure on one side than the other, and no it wasn't full of money, out of state hunting licenses, full page management area permits, and family pictures rounded it out.

After 20 years of putting my wallet in my front pocket, a few minutes in my back pocket and I get real uncomfortable in a hurry.

I have literally walked thru damn near every chiropractor office in the western half of this state.  A good number of them never got a chance to touch me when they failed to answer questions for me.

I ask them if they can cure allergies, offer ear candles, crystal therapy, and a couple other things.  If they say yes to any of this, they are nothing but licensed witch doctors at best, quacks or worse.

The guy I visit says he does nothing but align joints and loosen muscle spasms.  He says proper alignment allows nerve function to return to normal and everything functions off nerves, so that is good.  But he makes no whack-adoodle claims and I am just fine with that.  Today I was able to tie my shoes in under three minutes....yesterday it took me almost an hour to get dressed!  I will call that progress.

Stiff and sore again this morning, seems like I have relapsed some.  The bone cracker said I can skip coming in today, so I am taking him at his word.

Today's therapy includes walking in moccasins and NOT on concrete.  I am taking the dog and my one and only trail cam out to set it up on a great hillside where the deer cross the hiway day and night.  Last few years I have not hunted that area because I counted 11 tree stands in 120 acres!!!  Several illegal licks and bait stations were in the area and I was sickened by the lack of ethics to the point that I brought conservation officer out there with me.  He found waaaay too many violations to ignore and started to "work" the area.  He didn't tell me whether he got any convictions, but the other day he told me that nobody is hunting that area this year, then he smiled.  He says his trailcams have picked up several very nice muley bucks cruising and he encouraged me to get out while the getting's good.  When I asked him where a good spot would be to start, he just said, "That's for me to know and for you to find out!"  That's what I get for talking a big game about fair chase....he holds me to it!  Thanks, Jim.

A day in the woods, heck I might even take a bow and some blunts to shoot stumps.  That and no tags means I am bound to have deer in range most of the day!

JW, heres wishin you well. I have a bulging disc in my lower back from the navy, lucky for me I get a little money for my troubles. Add that to a crooked spine, and younger time in my life bull ridding and other youthful activities, as well as being a mechanic, I have frequent problems. I wore a back brace for a bit but be careful,  your back muscles get weak if you wear it all the time. Ditto on the wallet.

JW, I was helping my cousin tear down a corn crib and the ladder started to go and I grabbed for it. Missed the ladder and my back went out immediately.  I went to the doctor and he prescribed all kinds  of therapy and heat treatments.  As I was leaving a therapy session which was located across from the YFCA there was a sign that read, new message therapist.  I thought what the hell and walked over.  Because she was new to the YFCA she could get me right in. I told her  what I did to my back.  I laid down and she slowly checked over my back and then rolled up a wash cloth and told me to bite on it as I was going to need it. I did as she asked and after one half hour she had every knot worked out of my back.  I never had to go back to the doctor for therapy after that one visit.

Give that prescription  some thought.

I have a friend that is a trained and licensed massage therapist.  When I am NOT hurting, a 90 minute session gets her about halfway thru my back.  This would be an all day, bring an extra lunch, sort of job for her.  She also brings a portable table TO MY HOUSE to do the work.  She's da bestest!

Yesterday's hike into the woods to place the game cam had it's ups and downs (very funny joke to those that have hiked anywhere in the Black Hills). The spot I was intending to set the camera is on a trail that is worn deep into the hillside, but it showed no sign of deer at all, so I abandoned it.

I did find that the poacher's favorite treestand tree utterly abandoned.  The nylon strap that held the treestand in place was lying on the ground, broken.  I am salvaging the hooks and the ratchet mechanism! He also left a limb saw and some screw-in thingys.  Just out from the base of that tree is a sapling about 2 1/2 inches in diameter.  It has been racked pretty good by a buck.  14 yards to the west is a clump of saplings and halfway in between is a small pine sapling that perfectly blocks line of sight of any buck working that rub!  If that buck is using that rub, I can sit in the clump of saplings and make a full draw while he is busy rubbing and the little lone sapling is blocking his sight!  Perfect position, perfect opportunity, perfect plan....bound to fail!

We saw about a half dozen does bust out of cover in close range, but no bucks.  I mentioned this to a friend and he is mentoring a 12 yr old kid for deer hunting. I can fully anticipate they are going to be up there this weekend!

By the time the dog and I got back to the vehicle, my back was starting to feel tired.  The hike up the hill, over the hill, back up the hill, down the ridge, and back up the ridge had loosened things up considerably.  I got out of there in time to keep me overdoing it.  No chiropractor again today.  Felt a good bit better this morning, but it still took some time to stretch and move before I could bend over enough to put on pants, socks and shoes.  Too bad we have REAL weather here, or I would make like Primitive Tim and go shoeless!  Well, I would have to do better at cleaning land mines from the dog in the yard, too.

People like you are a blessing and im sure anybody you run into recognizes that on instant.  Next time I find myself in the black hills, were gonna have a beer togeather, or brandy ( my fav ) or a rum or twelve.
