I received my packages from Wildman, the first arrived on Wed. and it was a very nice piece of Hedge, Looks like a belly split. I was completely happy with this gift and was already planning on how to attack it. Then to my surprise I get another package from Ken the next day with a handmade hatchet and a really neat piece of art work.

Auggie's package arrived in great shape!  Nice box, address was written very clearly, nice heft and weight....but that is all I can say.  I have vowed to not open my package until I have shipped to my recipient.

Pins and needles here, struggling hard to keep my grubby mitts off it!

Went to get my wife a maple bar this AM and saw I had a package on my porch. It was a tough 30 minute trip. Thank you so much Rick Wallace. The mittens are awesome, the fire/ dutch oven tools will be well used. I cook almost exclusively outdoors in the warmer months. Keeps my house cool, and less clean up for my wife. I'll post some photos in a bit.

I came home to find a package from Trapper Rob waiting for me. Inside were a set of two-fletch self-nocked arrows, a bow stringer and tanned 'coon skin. I'm really exited to try out the hand made arrows and I'm already thinking up ways to put that 'coon skin to use. Thank you Rob, I really appreciate it. I'll try to get some pictures up this evening.

Alright, it seems I won the primitive archer lottery today. JW sent me a box full of great stuff.  I now am the proud owner of a hand made tool box perfect for carrying my bow making tools, a bow sock, a hand sewn leather wallet, a string keeper, a braided piece of South Dakota art, a beautiful wooden hanger with deer and turkey tracks and very fragrant item of which I am not sure what it is.  Oh and I almost forgot, a jar of honey.  Thank you JW.  You have been way too generous. I can't wait to show these items to everyone I know.

I posted one picture of everything but when I have more time I will post close ups of each item.

Well I got a package in the mail.. John (neolithicman)  you outdid yourself!  I got a beautiful Obsidian knife w/antler handle and stand ... a really neat skinner knife w/sheath (hope you don't mind but i may use this design to make my son a knife). some great fishing flies, exotic wood knife scales, a large piece of obsidian, and some tree seeds to start a forrest in Kansan plains :) .. you'll have to let me know what type they are.  Thanks again John ....  :)

Post by: NeolithicMan on January 02, 2015, 09:50:55 am
ALRIGHT! I have been so nervous that the obsidian blade would snap. budmenchaca did a fine job knapping the blade and I had already broken part of it so I am extremely relieved it made it there in one piece. I used google maps to see where you lived and it looked like you were in the city. so I sent some american chestnut, black locust, and I believe they where a white oaks acorns to brin the woods to you friend. The obsidian blade is functional but I was not sure how to make a sheath to protect it so I made a stand but believe me and my bloody little fingers, it is SHARP! Cheers to you an yours, another fun trade!

John

I got home yesterday and there was a peach colored slip from the post office, so I went this morning to pick it up.  Normally I do like JW and don't open mine til I ship the outgoing package, but I haven't had any luck finding a shipping tube.  Low and behold, I got a shipping tube in the mail, that was fill with a black locust stave From Michael Peterson.  YAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!  One Cherokee style bow is in the plan.  Maybe two, It looks like I will be able to carefully split it and get two bows out of it.

(http://i408.photobucket.com/albums/pp161/madcrow_2008/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/CAM00113_zpswwzrarpn.jpg) (http://s408.photobucket.com/user/madcrow_2008/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/CAM00113_zpswwzrarpn.jpg.html)

I got it home, happy as a pig in mud and started wrapping my gift to ship out.  Here came the mail man with another package from Michael Peterson.  Now I am overwhelmed.  What could it be.  Well, he has seemed to make up for every trade that I got burned on in the past year.  Literally.  It looks like he is trying to outfit me for next season.  This box contained six arrows with some very nice broadheads and some goose feathers.  He did a great job making them.  Other smaller boxes had sinew, rawhide strips and turkey feathers.  Oh yeah, 15 cane shafts for me to use all the feathers on.   Thank you very much.

I got home after dark today and checked the mail box. Bout jammed my fingers when they hit something solid in there and I spent the next five minutes trying to get it out. We have a big mailbox but it wasn't big enough for this box and I don't know how in the world the mail lady got it in there but it was wedged in and hung up on the rim around the opening and I just couldn't get a good enough hold to pull it out.
I finally managed to get it out and told my wife on the way up the driveway that this could be a knife or something.  Got it opened up in the house and sure enough, the box contained a really nice knife made by JO5H out of a farriers rasp with a really nice good fitting sheath.
The handle is made from a beautiful piece of wood with brass pins and the blade edge is super duper sharp.
I'm very proud to be the new owner of this knife and I will get a lot of use out of it I'm sure.
Thank you JO5H, you did a great job on the knife and it is perfect for me.
I can't post pics yet but this knife deserves to be shown off so I will try this weekend to get some taken and posted. Glad I mailed my guys package earlier today or I would feel bad opening this before I sent something out but I woulda opened it anyway and couldn't have felt bad at all because it felt so good to get this knife.  Thanks again!

I'm glad you like it. I really appreciate the compliments 'cause this was my first finished knife. I have a couple of pics I've been saving until after you got it.

I'm not the best photographer, but I think I did OK. I had a little trouble trying to show the color without getting a lot of glare.

I hope that call brings in some meat!!

I tell y'all what, the knife works as well as it looks. I carried it around with me today and used it for a few cutting tasks and I am liking it more and more. I held out a piece of river cane and diagonally chopped it into half inch pieces like it was  a wet noodle. I really like the feel of the longer handle when using it to chop like that.
I'm sure glad you got my name Josh, thanks again!

I'm glad you like it Aaron.  Since you weave basket and everything else, I added the basket weave pattern on the back to give it a personal touch.

Doesn't seem to be a lot of whining about what people received.  I chalk that up to 1) the quality of the goods being shipped  2) the quality of the people that are opening the boxes as they arrive.

Thanks everyone for sharing your Christmas with me.  I don't celebrate it at all, other than with you all.

Came home today and about tripped over a huge box just inside the door! LOL Woohoo!!!! I got 1442's package!! It was packed to the brim with awesome stuff.

River cane, bamboo, arrowheads, a knapped fishing hook (marked "from 1442" which my wife mistook as the year it was made and was suitably impressed, LOL) sinew, feathers, exotic wood samples and a fire bow.

I was planning to look up how to use a fire bow as I had no clue how it worked. I had tried to make fire with a wood dowel and a drill when I was a teenager with no luck so to be perfectly honest I figured it was for show and didn't really think it would work. Until to my wife's dismay I'm kneeling over a glowing ember on the wood floor of our new house! LOL

After dousing it I tried again over something suitably fireproof, and now me and the house smell like smoke. Great fun. Thank you so much 1442 I love it, and I can't wait to see what I can come up with out of those raw mats.

My guys stuff showed as delivered last week and I am down to biting my fingertips off to see how he likes it, LOL. Don't leave me hangin'!!!

P.s. What type of wood is the stuff that came 2 wrapped together? (in the back of the pic)

Glad you got the stuff skarhand and I hope you get good use of it all.
The wood you ask about is American hop hornbeam I'm pretty sure.
You did good getting a coal so quick.
Now you need to catch some fish with the stone hook, make fire and cook them up. I've caught a few fish on stone hooks but haven't cooked them on a primitively started fire yet.

Stay warm

I received a box today from Ozzy. Plenty of good stuff. Got a sweet knife with a neck sheath, a pocket quiver, a paracord bracelet, paracord lanyard, and some chunks of wood. One piece of spalted maple, walnut, and a piece of curly maple. I'm thinking the spalted maple will be turned into a couple slate turkey calls, or maybe a deer grunt call, or maybe one of each. Thanks Ozzy, everything looks great, and ya did a fine job on your first knife!! Glad I can say I got your number 1 knife, it'll get put to good use!

Ozzy asked me to post this picture for him.  I believe he got this from Mr. Hickory Bill.  Looks like a great gift.  Maybe Ozzy can post some more info.

I'm glad I sat this trade out because I have been to busy to make anything worthy of sending out.  I'm sure hoping to get into it next year.  Looks like some great trades so far.

I will get pictures up soon. But I did receive my Christmas trade gifts from wildkatt. I ended up getting two boxes. The first one I opened was a real primitive knife made out of deer bone for the blade and halted on with pine pitch. And the second package was a tube with a bow in it. A short Osage horse bow with horse hair on the top limb. 50@25 . I will let Katt tell the story about the Osage if he wants. But this one was in the making for awhile.  Thanks katt.

I recieved my gift from killer duck a few days ago. Been on the road and sick too much to post when I got it. The knives he sent me arent the first of his I own. Honestly,  if you ever get a chance to own one of his blades jump on it, he makes good ones.

Got my trade gift from Bluegill68 yesterday.  He e-mailed me last week and told me he had gotten my name for the trade and told me he would be bringing it to me on Tuesday and apologized for being so late.  I was betting he had made me a bow so I waited all week trying to imagine what he might bring me.  Well Tuesday came and he showed up, and we talked bows a little and he asked if I was ready to see what he had for me.  We went out to his truck and under his camper shell was the best gift a new bowyer could probably ever get, a brand new shave horse fresh out of his shop.  I drooled over it for a while and he then he pulled an Osage stave out of the back and said you got to have a good piece of wood to use with that thing.  I remarked that the Osage appeared to be very dark and asked him how long ago it had been split.  He said he had split that stave about 15 years ago.  I got the best gift I could have gotten!  I mean, what a gift!  Pics to come as soon as I get a chance to post one.
