Thought I'd post this carving because it is straight forward and works real good in the early spring for pike, musky and large bass. There is a cigarette lighter (1940,s model) for size comparison.
This is a realistic duckling, right down to the pin feathers.....BUT... is just as effective if finished smooth and roughly painted. Also in this presentation lure I'm using standard type jig hooks but jig heads with "weedless" wires, especially in areas where the water is shallower and has more vegetation.
There is a pic with a block off the saw beside the carved and burned lure, and one with the eyes because I usually use the gold halographic lure eyes (on this one it will get dk brn glass eyes. You can see the way the lead heads and keel weight is added and needs to be covered over and textured to match the top......
Anyway, here it is so if ya have any questions please advise.....by the way the wood in this is white pine.

Rich your carvings are outstanding
-
I wanna see the fishing report for this so bad! A video of this happening would be awesome. How clear are the waters you fish?
-
The water around here is clear enough to clearly see bottom detail in 15-20 feet of water.

Thank you falcon
-
I'm imagining some underwater footage from below of a pike nailing that thing on the surface :D
-
This is impressive. How much success do you have with these lures?
-
Ok, Rich, now you're just showing off!! Keep them coming, but the drool on the keyboard is getting excessive! You are truly an outstanding and talented artist. How about a pike you carve striking the lure in a large setting? I'm sure you would really bring it to life!

To use a word from my generation, Rich. That is RAD!
-
My great grandfather told of using ducklings and baby muskrats for bait for large pike and muskies. Them slough sharks are ornery!
-
Thanks fellas, yest the lures work very well, mostly at hatching time or so. JW this lure and one that looks like a summer weasel work real well.....I guess pike, musky, and bass will eat anything that fits 8).
I was thinking I should have mentioned this: the only critical elements of this lure are general shape, general color, and the correct attitude sitting on the water......all else is bells and whistles. Everybody knows that mallard ducklings have dark brn eyes and that their feet are bark not yellow......but this does not seem to be of importance to the fish and I see no difference in hits when using the "lure" eyes, or gold, silver, copper spinner blades for the feet......even if it's painted yellow and the dark markings are simply painted as hard lines no diff to the fish.
This lure is weighted so it's sitting correctly, but is also "self righting", and is stable when retrieved quickly......think it will make more sense when ya see the hardware.
Here are the pics of the eyes, and belly cover which I left an untextured part so it can be signed (it's going to a collector). When the epoxy putty cures tomorrow I'll get it painted and the hardware on.

Too cool ! Bob

That is amazing.
How did you get the texture look?
-
Nice, Rich. That is one sweet looking bait, for sure! Looks tasty!! :P
-
were do you tie the leader? I hang on to wooden lures i find and have made a few.

Here is where we are at this morning. I dry fit all the hardware so there are no issues installing it after it's painted, also I need to tank test it before it's painted. So here are a couple of pics of hardware and tank testing.....should be painted by tonight so maybe I'll be able to post some good pics of the finished lure....if not then tomorrow for sure.
You can see the line tie on the lower front chest....normally it would have an eye for direct tie and a split-ring for the steel leader. Neuse, it's a 30 year old "cub detailer burning pen" . I can post a pic if you want to see it.
any ? please advise

This is just too cool

Alright..................seen enough. Ready to negotiate for a couple of these for sure. I would love to get a video of this getting hit by a pike. Very cool.
-
Very nice lure Rich.

Thanks for your gracious comments fellas. Well it's done so see what ya think. There are 2 sets of pics believe these close up shots are actually pretty clear.....

Hey Rich....
First of all, you do fantastic work!!! bows and sculpture
I've have been fishing for a verrrry long time, many tournaments, for fun, with kids and just watching a cork with a beer in hand for some R&R. But I know for a fact that 95% of the fishing baits are make to catch fisherman not fish... ;) ;) :). But I bet this one will catch both.. :) :)
Again nice work,
DBar
-
NICE !!! Rich, and it could double as the cutest deke in the spread ;D
-
Any idea what the final weight is Rich ? Bob
-
That is awesome.
-
Dave, aint bug bit sir, helps out the SS check some, aint complainin though 8)
Hey Keith, Long time ago I made my dad a spread of whitepine mallards and black ducks. When he passed he give 'em to my younger brother and he still hunts over them.....got one hen deek that looks more like a flour sifter ::) ::) ;)
chamook, this one is heavy at 1-1/8 ounces...be ok for medium to heavy action gear. I fish with ultra lite stuff and I'd have to "lob" it for sure. You alter the weight on these by using lighter jig hooks and no added keel weight.
neuse, thank you
D bar, save you for last cause it sounds like you been fishin in my boat for a long time. I fall into the R&R (with long neck) category now a days. Been fishin a long time too, probably caught more than I got any right to so maybe the last 15 years or so it's mostly catch and release (except what I may want for supper). I carry a whole bunch of my homemade wood plugs and actually watch for other fishermen. Mostly if I see somebody out with the kids and they aint havin too much luck I mosey over and give a some lures and gear and point to the right area.....then pop a long neck. Ever see a kid with their first "big one" on the line? well it's priceless sir. I like your style sir!!!! if your ever up in northern lower Mi. your welcome in my fishing boat anytime (except "hard water" season 8) it aint big but there is room for 2 old farts, a beer cooler, maybe a tackel box or two.... we can allways tow a bucket behind the boat in case the BS gets too deep in the boat,eh? >:D
thanks again fellas.

"Ever see a kid with their first "big one" on the line? well it's priceless " Sur have, many times, yes sir "priceless".
Rich
Love northern lower MI. just might take you up on the fishing trip some time.....If your ever down my way look me up I got a couple good fishing holes, that we might be able to loose that duckling bait in a 10# bass's mouth. :) ;)
Till next time,
DBar

Beautiful work Rich...You are talented Sir...

Where You located in the northern part of the State ? Bob
-
I live in a small town called Mancelona, were about 30 minuets north of Traverse City or 12 miles north of Kalkaska it's in Antrim County. Got more good hunting, fishing and forest land that anybody's got a right to.... 8)

:) great stuff ... I enjoy seeing your carvings
-
Good job Rich !!
-
I love that area! The wife and I were hoping to relocate there, but the cards didn't play that way.
-
Thanks Rich - I've wet a line a bit in that neck of the woods, pretty country for sure ! Bob
-
Holy crap!!!! I want one of those for my annual pike fishing trip! that is to cool. awesome detail
-
Rich, thats fine work right there buddy. I did'nt even know you could use baby ducks to catch fish although the bigs flatheads and blues around here would probabley hit anything if it appeared alive and moving. Danny
-
one more point rich. I looked at the finished pix after my last post and I think I could catch a few feral felines with it if I hooked some line to it and left it in the grass. Maybe even put a little deer blood on it as an attractant. Danny
-
That poor little baby duck is gonna end up getting chewed up by one of your toothy critters! It's so cute - hell I almost feel sorry for it! ;D
-
Love your detail in your work Rich! That should fool the wariest aquatic predators. Watch out for the owls ;D
