Title: mini bow/arrow help
Post by: sleek on December 18, 2014, 11:46:08 pm
So I am making my wifes boss a mini bow as a work party secret santa gift. He has been wanting one of my bows for awhile so this will tease him a bit. It shoots qtips great but when I bought bamboo toothpicks I cant get them to fly. I tried using mini pipe cleaners to wrap the back flu flu style but no dice. Its super fast but how do I get mini fletching on there to stabilize?

That's a pretty cool little bow....I'd try to use a neck/ breast feather from a duck or chicken on a piece of bamboo skewer, should work OK as a flu flu.

I made a little bow like that once for my brothers 4H project. I actually Knapped a tiny obsidian point for the tip of an arrow which was a pain... but I just used printer paper for fetching. try craft foam... they sell thin sheets of it at places like hobby lobby and other craft stores. However, gluing the fetching in place was an entirely different matter. ;-)
good luck, KB

how about just wrapping a fur strip as 'fletching' (Like in blowguns)

When I did this I used bamboo skewers and just split them for about 1 inch. Inserted a piece of card and then glued and bound it back together. Takes about 3 minutes per arrow.
My mate shot me once with one of them and it went through a couple layers of clothing and stuck about 1/2 inch into my arm....not to be messed with! Watch those eyes!

How about something like this? Tied this up real quick this morning, didn't have time to nock it, make it pretty or knap a tiny little point, but you get the idea....used a 5" saddle hackle wrapped flu flu style...I think it would work(http://i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh500/thundersdad/20141219_081419_zpsnxprvst5.jpg) (http://s1248.photobucket.com/user/thundersdad/media/20141219_081419_zpsnxprvst5.jpg.html)

Here's the type of feather I
used (I'm a fly tier) and I trimmed it down a little. Shot it across the room with a rubber band a it stuck into a cardboard box. :D(http://i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh500/thundersdad/20141219_090459_zps0s3lxoml.jpg) (http://s1248.photobucket.com/user/thundersdad/media/20141219_090459_zps0s3lxoml.jpg.html)

I usually soak the tips with super glue as well JW,  makes my blow gun darts hard as nails.

Try bamboo kebob sticks. You have more shaft to work with.

Nine bamboo skewer arrows from Thunder, bamboo quiver and I had to make another bow to do the arrows justice. This one of osage. Full draw next.

Yes try making them longer and use kebab sticks/skewers. Much more fun because you can be super accurate  ;) Me and a mate used get a darts board and set it up on the other side of the kitchen...i've had a 140 :)
