A couple of weeks ago Steve.b sent me some nice pieces of Ocean Spray...Thanks Steve! Steve introduced me to this "super wood"... ;) I been wanting to try a shorty after seeing half eye's bows early on in my membership here at PA...It wasn't long after talking to him he sent me a really nice piece of his work that was my inspiration...I never made anything under 60'' so this was really fun...Ended up with around 1'' of set, this is amazing wood.
Here's the specs... Ocean Spray sapling 49'' ntn
1 1/8'' wide in center tapering last 10''
3/4'' pin nocks
57# @ 26''
Sorry for the double money shots, couldn't decide which one to post, thanks Steve b. and Rich... ;)

Now that's how you get wood to work ;D
-
Man you got every bit of that one Don...That top for bottom full draw is a mirror of the top for top. 26 inches from a 49" self bow is another matter too.....Like I said, ya got it all man 8) 8) 8)

-
Very nice Donald. Great work getting it bending that much :)
-
Very nice bow Don, so cool to see a short bow bent into a perfect arc like that.
-
Thanks huisme, Rich, Falcon, Sidewinder and Matt for the comments, much appreciated guys...
Don
-
Thank you Greg! It was my first shorty and a fun project... ;)
Don

Nice tiller, looks great. OS certainly loves to bend doesn't it
-
Very nice work...I like it! 8)
-
Nice work. that is some bend. How does it feel in the hand?
-
Wow Don you hit that one perfect. I don't think you could get it to bend any better than that. Those short bows still scare me . and I have not went below 60" . good job Don.
-
Now that's my kind of bow! Short & sassy...That's weird, kinda the same way I like my woman. >:D
Great looking bow.
Tattoo Dave

Wow, not a flat spot on that stick anywhere. A little deer slayer. Nice, Don.
-
Wizardgoat, Yes it does, it is amazing wood both in compression and tension!
Thunder, Thanks man...
jeffp51, I was shocked to feel little to no hand shock...
Bob, thanks, I was nervous and kept trying to be patient with it...
tattoo dave, LOL, thanks man...
steve.b, Couldn't have done it without you man, thanks again for taking the time and interest to send me the Ocean Spray! I will try to do every piece justice ;)

That is an elegantly simple segment of a perfect circle. I'm going to have to mess with some Holodiscus soon myself!
-
Man, that looks like a piece of rubber!
Very nice bend on that stick... so small yet so pretty... :)
-
Nice bend! Now I know I can go a little more. I think your bowstring is a little long though >:D
-
Thank you Bill...
Thank you arachnid...
DC, Lol man that tillering string is not used to being on short bows... ;D Those were actually last stage tillering photo's with a dusty shirt...
Don

Wow! I knew ocean spray could bend, but dang, you really went all out on this one :o
-
I was looking at your bow and thinking now that is really elegantly simple. Just gorgeous. Rich will be proud. Jawge
-
Accipiter, I told steve b. that I was going to try and stress the wood, sort of an expirement...I have much faith in OS now. The sapling with its crowned/naturally trapped back and a flat belly is an awesome combo!
George, Thank you for the kind comment Sir, coming from you means a lot...
Don
-
Don, you nailed that one! That is a perfect bend. Ocean spray is on my list of woods to try. You got a lot of bow out of that little piece of wood. Great job.
-
Thanks Howard, I credit the bows success to the wood...This stuff is amazing...I posted 1'' of set but picked up the bow 24hrs later and noticed it returned to almost dead straight! Ocean Spray is stubborn in a good way ;)
Don

Hey Don,
Really like it, I have no experience with shorty's but if my first is as good as that one I'll be stoked....
Great job,
DBar
-
Don,
I know what your saying about "good wood", but with all due respect that sapling didn't just fall over to the ground as a bow. As a matter of fact if the bow was a PhD thesis project we would all be callin you Doctor Burchett right now. For a bow of that length and weight to draw that much and have nearly no set at all it has to do more with the bowyer than the wood.....I know you wouldn't say it yourself so I did....You done better than just good sir that tiller is spotless, period.

Thank you Bill and Rich for the kind comments, means a lot...
Don

Oh, wow! I don't do a lot of short stuff, except for kids and recurves., but from what I understand that tiller is PERFECT!
-
It's all been said, but DANG! Nice work man! No heat treat it looks like?
-
Nice bend on that shorty! Great job Don.
-
Amazing bend Bro!... Brian
-
Springbuck, thank you...
Peacebow, No heat treat on this one. If it would have taken a large amount of set I was prepared to try it though.
Robert, thank you sir...
Brian, It's amazing wood ;)
Don
-
WOW, that is some kinda ARC.

Inspiring and simple at the same time.
Half eye's inspires more people than I believe he truly knows.
Ron

Wow!
Just found that beauty, awesome work - tiller is fantastic!
-
Thank you Ron, I agree, Rich has made some awesome short bows over the years and is a proven bowyer...
Thank you Simson, I enjoy all of your work and wonderfully tillered bows.

I just received this wonderful bow from Don. Thought I would add to his post. It is even better in person and is just awesome. When I got the bow it was different than Don stated...the bow has 1/2 inch of reflex and quite easily draws 50# at 24 inches. The grease/pitch finish is outstanding as well.
Don, I'm proud to own this bow and look forward to hunting her. I'm sorry I couldn't wait to shoot her but man it's a well mannered rocket launcher 8) 8) 8) 8) obviously it's well tillered.
Thank you sir for a first class bow, it will be treasured.
rich
ps: added a pic of her showing that it has no set and about 1/2 inch of reflex
-
Rich,
I'm glad you approve of her bud, that means a lot coming from you...I hope you enjoy it and thanks for the inspiration...I am going to make some more of these short bendy bows, kind off addictive... ;)

I'm late on this after the Holidays...but, WOW! The tiller/dimensions/and lack of set is really remarkable! Awesome post.
-
Dang man, that is a nice looking curve. I want a short bow now!
