Title: Will this grip cause joint damage?
Post by: punch on December 29, 2014, 10:43:44 pm
I have been using the grip in this photo.   I have spent a lot of time shooting over the weekend and now my fingers joints are really soar. I am using a 55# bow.  I think I just need a break and over did it.  But I am wondering if this grip is going to cause any long term damage?

If the pain persists you might have it checked out but unused muscles ache after hard use.

He is basicly doing a maybe, light thumb grip?

It looks like to me he is using his thumb joint with his Index finger overlapping like shooting with a Thumb Ring.

That's a pinch grip with the index finger and the middle finger drawing the bow.  The index finger does two jobs: pinches the arrow along with the thumb and also helps to hold the string back.  If the ring finger was also helping to draw back the string, it would be called a tertiary grip.  Many NA tribes used this grip (shown in the picture).

The soreness should be in your finger tips (index finger and middle finger) and not in the joints.

I shoot about like that and my hands have been fine.  I don't shoot a lot at a time though.  Probably no more than ten shots in a session.

I took a 3 day break and feel better now.  I guess 2hrs of shot after shot is too much.  My finger tips are pretty tough now so I don't get the soarness in the pads just some soarness in the joints when I put in 1.5hr+ non-stop shooting.
