Title: aw carp, im an idiot
Post by: sleek on January 03, 2015, 12:11:01 am
I made a bow in a hurry and made the wrong limb the top one. The top is now 27"to the rest and the lower is 31.5" to the rest. Any tiller ideas? Its 60" ttt and has a cut in shelf to rid myself of a nasty knot. I have no idea how I did this. I guess I will shorten the bottom by 2" to make a 58"ttt bow. Its only 1" wide out the fades. Think 45@28 is asking too much?

This is a good reason to add a shelf instead of cutting one in.    Cut a shelf on the other end of the handle.  ;D

Well I was able to fix it by dropping the cut shelf an inch and half, and brought the extended fade in some on the upper limb, effectively makeing longer by bending more in the fade. Came out 45#@28".  3 inches of set, one inch string follow.

Braced profile.  Deflexed handle then recurved the tips 2 inches.  After full dray there is 1 inch string follow.

Now't wrong with that, we've all done it.
Take a leaf out of Bill Gates' book and call it a design feature not a bug.

Looks pretty balanced that way, as Long as it shoots straight, it should be fine  8)

Looks like you pulled a shooter out of your oops.  I thought this would be a post about some botched carp skin backing haha.

Nicely done. Bow making is sometimes about fixing. Jawge

Don't do a thing to it...its fine. The difference or not of the length of a bows limbs doesn't matter, but what matters is the timing and balance of draw between them.

I have to agree with the evil Chris, just look at the upper limb on Yumi bows.

That this was going to be about bow fishing. :)
Instead, I get to see a beautiful bow.

Thanks guys for the compliments, I still see the tiller off but its close enough to keep the bow safe... I hope! Lol. Anyways,  a pretty handle makes up for a slightly difficult tiller. Heres some pics below. I love the effect of tigers eye in thin ring osage.

Here is the remnants of the knot that made me cut in the shelf. It was nasty looking. Xnow it just adds character to the pass.

PS
I hate the term 'expert', but if pressed for a definition, I say, an expert is the person who can put right their own mistakes :).

An expert I am most assuredly not. I traded this bow with Patrick. With his help we got the tiller to come around. Lost about 3 pounds of weight but it looks better. I expect he will be posting pics of it when he is done dressing it up. His finish work is amazing.

Turned out good considering the blunder.. "Came out 45#@28".  3 inches of set, one inch string follow. "  how does it shoot with all that set..?  Just asking becasue I have one bow that does not hit that strong or quick and it took about 2" of set.

By 3 inches of set I mean this: I reflexed the tips two inches back. After being shot in, they stayed one inch towards the belly. The two iches of reflex I lost plus the one inch string follow ( result of set ) equal 3 inches. Honestly,  performance wise, its an average bow, nothing terrible about it in speed or anything.  Where the set is on your bow may be hurting more than the fact it has set. 2 inches is acceptable.

Hey sleek, thanks for the compliment bud! And don't sell your self short, this little bow is more than average! The tiller was off a bit but I enjoyed working with you on it to get it lined out. I love the bow and I will be working on it a good deal. I have an awesome surprise in mind for the finishing touches. Patrick
