Title: The Tennessee Classic
Post by: Pat B on January 24, 2015, 11:34:33 am
In less than 100 days(couldn't wait for Bear)the Tennessee Classic will officially begin. Before we all know it we will be packing up our vehicles and getting ready for the drive, some quite long, some not so long. In the next 100 days we still have plenty of time to make or find something to add to the raffle table.
After seeing all the work that Pappy and the Twin Oaks guys do to make this the best traditional archery shoot in the US, making sure we are all comfortable and most of our needs are taken care of, making sure we all have a great experience I think it is only right that we give a little back to them. Over the last 8 years or so that I've been going to the Classic I've seen Pappy and the Twin Oaks gang do whatever they have to to make this an experience we will not soon forget, an experience we will want to enjoy for years to come.
Lets all take a little of our allotted bow building time and make or come up with something to go on the raffle table at the Classic. Most, if not all of the monies collected from the raffles goes back to the Twin Oaks Club to help with the cost of the Classic. Just think how much just the many port-a -Johns cost to rent, the hot shower, how about all the 3D targets, gravel for the roads and not the mention the hundreds or possible thousands of man hours that goes into the making of the Tenn Classic...and you can enjoy it all for just the $20 sign up fee. Where else can you get sooooo much for soooo little. Where can you, and your family get such an inexpensive vacation and with some of your best friends from all over the US and other parts of the world.
In a few minutes I'll be heading down to my basement workshop to start the second part of this years donation for the Classic. You probably remember the little sinew backed osage bow, "Gidget" I made last fall, from a stave given to me by Gun Doc at last years Classic. Well to add to that I'm also going to make a coyote plains style quiver and hopefully a set of hill cane or sourwood arrows to go along with it. I'm trying to top my last year donation. That was a hickory backed lemonwood ALB style bow, side quiver and 3 old Bear arrows that Pearlie sent to me. That set yielded $700 for Twin Oaks at the raffle table and I am very proud of that. I want this years offering to make more for these great guys and their great shoot.
I'll post pics as I progress with this years offering and hope you will do the same. Post them here in this post. It doesn't have to big or expensive or even hand/homemade but it should be something that folks will bid on. So, this is my challenge to all of you that are going to the Classic this year. Even if you aren't going but want to contribute, this is the easiest way to go. Lets all show Pappy and the Twin Oaks gang just how much we appreciate them, all the work they do and the Tennessee Classic.   8)

I have been working on some things this winter for donations.  So far I have a couple of tooled gun slings, a couple of canteens, a quiver and some other things in the works. Am not sure I will be able to make it again this year, but if I do I have lots of things to bring.  Joe

The stave was gifted to me from osage outlaw from the monster tree at last years classic where I made a bow from it.  I hate to let it go as its a sweety, and the second bow I've made from the monster(the first was given away as well,n I want to keep a monster tree bow for myself)...BUT I feel wrong about keeping it and feel like I need to pass it on as Clint passed it on to me. Uggggh..hate to let her go.  :'(

Also the northern community bow project a bunch of us have worked on should be on the raffle table as well. :) Should be sweet when finished up,and hope it catches pappy a fair amount. ;) I know I'm bidding on it ;)

Pappy, I don't think we could do enough to repay for what you guys do for us with the Classic and all year long. What I'm suggesting isn't a drop in a bucket. I only wish I could do more so I'm asking everyone who can to contribute.  ;)   8)

Mr Brennan said a mouthful and I can only echo what he has said.  Whether I attend or not is immaterial, I owe your club and specifically you, Pappy, for what the value I have received the last two years.  I consider it an honor to support an organization and an event that I personally believe in wholeheartedly!

Pat:  The arrow in the picture is the one you gave me on my first visit to the Classic and is a treasure for me.  It reminds me of the generosity and the kindness of the people you meet at the Farm!  I have it displayed so that I am always reminded of the talent and great people you meet there.  Its 9 below again today so only plan to do the chores and get some fire wood in!  My wood pile is starting to look like Burn Up Chuck has been in the shed!  Joe

Scott:  Could be we might work up a trade for a sling.  You will have to give me some instructions as to what you want, measurements, colors, etc. along with some patience as they take some time to build!  This time of year there is no knapping or working in the shop so I need to work on things in my Hell Room!  Joe

Pat the set your giving is awesome and the fella doing the leather work is a master craftsman for sure. Not sure yet if I will be able to make it. Only two things stopping me, time and money. Not sure if I will have the time and if I do I may not have the money. I will have to wait until I see what the spring storm clouds bring. I'm in roofing and if I'm knee deep in a hail storm then I won't be able to brake away due to time. Gotta make hay while the sun is shinning if you know what I mean.

I been wanting to go for several years now and its probabley about time I do it. Jon W said he wants to go to so we'll see what happens.

The quiver is done. I've added a bow case and a knapped knife(from Hickory Bill)with deer leg bone handle. All I have to do now is build the arrows. I partially straightened 6 hill cane shafts and will make the arrows soon.

Okay Pat, Here's my contribution to the raffle table.  Just finished dressing the pair up.  Inside and outside split from a snakey stave.

Wow!  You guys are putting up some incredible stuff for the table!  Makes me plum ashamed of my paltry offering http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,52221.0.html.  If I sent some cash with it to Pappy, would anybody be willing to fill out some tickets for me?  Pretty please with sugar on top?  If not Pappy can just throw it in the kitty.  Josh

Talked to Bonepile this afternoon, looks like the big guy isn't gonna make it. His Mother in law has taken a turn for the worse and he wants to stay with the wife. He said if Parnel will stop on the way up the basket will still be going.

Well...I can assure you and Miss Joanie that no one is more disappointed than I.  I was hoping someone else would fill out the tickets for me as I can only imagine how busy the both of you are and I would not wish to be a burden.  I do appreciate it though.  If it's going to be any trouble, I would prefer the money just be considered a donation.  Josh
