A few weeks ago me and my wife had the pleasure of doing a weekend build with John Strunk. It was pretty cool hearing his stories and opinions, seeing his bows on the wall and seeing what he's been working on. John and his wife Pat a good people, and we had a blast. I found a beauty deflexed yew stave in his pile with thin sapwood, tight rings and nice colour. I went with a self yew recurve, and my wife went with a boo backed yew longbow. Mine ended up as 60" 54#@26", and hers is 65" 40#@25".
Pics were taken at Oceanside Oregon where we stayed, except for the tip overlay shots. We did those at home.
Thanks for lookin, cheers! Ryan

John suggested I name my bow Snaggletooth, this snag ripped my jeans so its a pretty suiting name

Really like em both and the company you kept and the location are all outstanding. Thats cool that your wife is into it too. Your very fortunate.
I've got one piece of yew I traded for a few years back that I've been wanting to do just like yours. I can feel it coming up in the rotation. I've 2 other osage bows to make and then I think I'm gonna do that one. Thanks for the inspiration. I will let you know how I like it and then maybe we can do the trade we talked about.
-
Wow! Both of those bows are really beautiful, tiller looks flawless and the finish is amazing. That recurve has given me some serious inspirations for a 60" yew piece I have drying. :D

John is a treasure. You did well to spend time with him. And those are some nice bows.
-
Thanks guys. I agree, John is a gem. Can't forget about Pat too!
A couple things he opened my eyes too, tillering by feel. My bows hit the tree probably over 50 times, and I take and study just as many photos.
We put my bow on a stick twice, he could just pick my bow up, look at it, feel it, and tell me where to take some scrapes, and he was always right.
Final tiller was him watching me shoot it, and a few more scrapes.
And my jaw hit the floor when he bent my recurves after a 5 minute steam
-
Glad your time with John wasn't a complete waste of time ;D ;)
That bow is a serious stunner! Both of them are georgeous, and I especially like the photo of the two of them together on the beach rock.
I love how those pin nocks came put.
5 minute steam! Must be the Tillamook water ;)
-
How thick were the tips when they went in the steam?
-

That is what I hope to be able to do one day - I want to be a bow-making Yoda.
And of course, your bows are great and the scenery is beautiful!
-
Nice pair of bows

Wow! Those sure are beautiful!!
I'm so jealous ;D.
