Hello all,
I'm new to the forum, but have been consulting it for years (thanks!). I did a quick search and didn't see any posts for basket quivers made from cattail, so here are a few pics of mine. Both the ribs and weavers are made from the cattail stalk, not the leaves. For the weavers, I split the stalks open with a knife and scraped out the pith. Each stalk produces two weavers, of approx. 4-5 feet. The rim of the basket is reinforced with a blackberry bramble, which is lashed on with thin spruce roots. The carry strap is made of braided spruce roots, which isn't the most comfortable, as it's fairly stiff. I later swapped that strap for one of simple 2-ply basswood bark cordage, which is much more flexible. Many hours involved in making this, though it was fun and free.

Very cool. Nice work.

That is awesome!

Very nice. I haven't seen a cattail quiver on PA before. Cattail is a survivors best friend. You could making a living with just it for food, shelter, clothing and accessories. 8) The Cherokee would use split blackberry canes for baskets as well as river cane.

I really like that one! Have plenty of cattails up my way may have to try my hand at my first weaving project someday
-
Thanks so much OA. That is incredibly attractive and I bet very functional.

That is a very cool looking quiver, never thought of cattails. Now you need to put some different arrows in it and make a bow for it, too.

That's a great looking quiver and looks to be very well done. Thanks for sharing.

Lovely quiver, very nice. 8) I made one similar from black locust bast. some stone points tend to get caught, though.
-
Nice! Every time I drive by cat tails I've thought about this project. How does it hold up?

It seems fairly durable, I'm sure because I used the stalks rather than the leaves. Though it does tend to snag all points on the way in, and broadheads on the way out.

What about lining those basket quivers with birch bark?

Way to go....I like it.

I like it! I too never thought of cattail as a raw material. I live on Marsh Road so I'm now surrounded by a source for basket quiver construction. No more excuses for me not to at least attempt one. I'm curious though - what time of year is best for harvesting?

Yep, that's a winner!
I bet it is fairly light also.
