Not sure if I should be posting this is the hunting section because it's gun related. I'm 31 and have never hunted, but am starting to get my ducks in a row to start next season.
My only interest is bow hunting, but around here there lots of black bears, wolves, and Cougars. Do you guys bring guns for protection from the unexpected, or don't worry about it?
-
If I was hunting in your area I would be packing a 44 mag. as back up. In my area the biggest predators are coyotes and bobcats. Neither are a threat so I don't carry a gun.
-
When it is legal to be armed, why would you not be?
-
because I'm not really into guns.
I'm definitely into protecting myself from being hunted though
-
I carry my 9mm when hunting in the Midwest, mostly for cougars.
-
Sorry WG. I was not meaning to be flippant. I am armed when ever it is legal to be so.
-
here in Michigan I have no need
but if in your situation I defiantly would.
-
It depends on your hunting laws and season, here during archery season it's a no no but that's archery only

Up here in Canada we can't carry pistols. Range use only and then with a lot of hoops to jump through.
-
Of course in Canada, you can't legally carry a handgun doing anything, even hunting. You can only target shoot with a handgun, at a certified range. Most people don't go thru the trouble of jumping thru the necessary hoops to even own one. Also, it's illegal to carry a gun during bow season, unless you're hunting Black Bears. I've never hunted bears, so I don't get to carry a gun during bow season.
-
Beat me to it DC... ;D
-
If you hunt in bear country pepper spray might be a better option if you are not used to the firearm.
There was a guide on TradGang that said if you carry a pistol in grizzly country file the front site down...so it won't hurt so much when the bear stuffs it up your butt.
We have black bears around here and I've never worried about being in the woods with them.
-
Or save the last shot for yourself...
-
Your probably right Pat on the black bears.....................but I'm just not use to them..........yet. :)

I heard a Guide say he carried a .22 when guiding for grizzly hunters. If the bear attacked he shot the hunter in the foot and ran.
-
If you have a prospectors licence you can carry a handgun. Friends of mine working on the coast carry .44 magnums for the grizzly bears.
I always carry bear spray and bear bangers at work. (And a axe and a few knives).
-
Thats funny as all get out pat
-
You guys crack me up. Thanks for the insite

I feel safer with my 45. In Oklahoma we have bigger cats, coyotes, and snakes, oh, and wild boar. 45 should help those problems. Even in archery season you can carry here. Lawmakers couldnt see a reason to deny second amendment just cause were hunting with a bow.

I'm in Michigan, have a CPL - I carry 'cause of 2 legged critters. A side note - Years ago (I was still married), My Spouse and I were coming in (Walking together) after a Morning Bow Hunting and met up with a pack of wild/feral dogs that got REAL aggressive. We ended up walking back-to-back and yelling at them as they followed Us for about a 1/4mile, finally backing off. Not one of them had a collar and were very scruffy looking. Never saw them again, but heard stories about them in the area. Bob

I would have arrowed some of those dogs

Same here. I had the feral dog problem once also during muzzle loading season. I did drop one.

Where I live I carry bear spray, a Pistol that shoots both solids and #3 buckshot, and a big bore rifle. There have been four people in the last couple of years killed and eaten by grizzlies. When I hunted in Alaska and the Yukon I had my bow slung over my shoulder and my 375 carried in my hands. If you have to use bear spray you need to have ideal wind conditions as you will usually get a fair dose of it yourself and that's not a pleasant experience! We can carry a weapon during bow season. Last year my dad was out in Montana and he carried a big canfof bear spray with him. One morning he was in a hurry, hopped in his brand new truck and threw his bag in the back seat setting off his can of bear spray. He said it fogged up his truck so quick he thought Seal Team 6 was making entry. He proceeded to stumble out of his truck, peeling off his clothes on front of all his neighbors because he said his skin was on fire. He was clawing at his watering eyes and managed to find his way to a shower. He said he couldn't get into his truck for a week. Oh how I wish I could have been there to see that!

No need to here is south central kansas but if I lived in an area that had apex predators I would be carrying something.
In response to the dogs, I would have definitley arrowed as many as I could. They probabley would have turned their attention to the injured ones as dinner.
