Title: How severely can you violate knots on the belly?
Post by: make-n-break on March 17, 2015, 09:43:37 am
Been working a knotty snakey mulberry sapling. 2-1/4 diameter. 68" long. Been reading in the popular archery literature and can't find much info on approaching belly knots. How severely can you violate them? Iv left all the knots on the back tall and proud. It's reduced to rough dimensions and the belly knots have islands of material left on them too for now. There are 3-4 knots on both the belly and back of each limb, so total 6-8 knots per limb. Do you cut straight through them (belly side) and pretend they're not there when tillering?

Cut right through and make them as flat as the rest of the belly. Always.

Back fill them with super glue, all of them. If it all soaks in? Add more.

Some guys like to leave the limbs a titch stiff if there is a large knot in the area

Take care when you have pins at the surface of the belly perpendicular to the axis. This happens a lot with sapling bows. Wood is much weaker in compression perpendicular to the grain (more than ten times), so they can cause hinges if ignored.

Do like Pearlie said and you will be fine. The knot area is going to be a bit stiffer anyway so no need to leave any more meat than the rest of the belly. If your too close to the edge leave it a little proud on the outside edges of the limb, othewise the back is the only other area to leave proud.
