Title: Osage takedown bow.
Post by: docmann on March 31, 2015, 03:51:41 pm
This Osage take down bow was harvested from the heart of the Southern Cheyenne country in Custer county in western Oklahoma. The heavy propellering limited the full length staves available from it, but several good 3' pieces were taken.
The bow measures 66" NTN, and tip overlays are constructed of buffalo horn.
My preferred draw weight is in the 50-60# range, but the bow tillered so well at 68#, I couldn't bring myself to trim any further.
This type of handle is used frequently by one of the more prolific bowyers of our club (The Oklahoma Selfbow Society) who demonstrated the technique recently.
The limb design used is a camo pattern inspired by turkey wings. The target arrows in the photo are of similar style and color.
The bow is named after a Southern Cheyenne chief who passed away some six to seven years ago, Edwin Pewo. I had the pleasuring of knowing him for a short period of time just prior to his death. He and his wife spoke fluent Cheyenne, and he was heavily respected within the tribe.
The bow was constructed with an upcoming bear hunt in mind, but will be used largely for Whitetail deer and wild turkey here in western Oklahoma.

Very nice work you've done there.  If I can get mine to look like that I will be happy, happy, happy indeed!

How does the take down aspect come in to play doc?

Thanks for the kind words guys.
Drummer, that's the real pay off.
Getting in and out of the field is a breeze. Just a firm tug and they're apart. When you're out of the truck, a quick push and you're good.
I've never had it happen, but how many of you have had nightmares about snapping off the tip of your favorite hunting bow while slamming the car door?
Here's a little Kiowa replica I made a couple of years ago for my son who has long outgrown it.
Was always a bit apprehensive about takedowns until Mike Yancy gave me a little word of encouragement. But his last words of admonishment still ring in my ears:
"If you don't index the limbs near perfectly straight, it'll kick like s mule!"

Very nice, looks like a powerhouse of a bow and the finish work is sharp. From looking at the full draw and knowing the draw weight I would guess it shoots a arrow with authority. Good luck with the bear.

Those are all beautiful bows...ive always liked the full draw to the sky myself for a shot at the tiller.

Cool, I didn't recognize the handle shape as a sleeve set take down.

Docmann , did you bring that bow to OJAM?
Geat set you have there , i didnt get loose to see your demo on arrow building ether ,I was so busy with that Kentucky coffee tree wood I didn't get much of a chance to visit with everyone , good thing Jerry donated a couple coffee staves to the OSS so we can do a little workshop on it at the campout , didn't know that me and Ralph wa the only ones there that had ever worked with it before and I think Ralph used it in laminated bows , saw him work a peace up for a bamboo backed bow .

Yep, I did bring it to OJAM and used it in the clout shoot and 3-D shoot.  It's a little heavier than I wanted but I decided to leave well-enough alone when the limbs looked symmetrical on the tillering tree. My son ended up in the clout shoot finals so in the process of watching him, I left it leaning against a tree down by the pond. Fortunately, Alex or Gary picked it up or it might still be there. I thought about latching on to a Kentuky Coffee stave but like you said, no one seem to have much experience with it. I'm glad to know there are at least a couple of you out there with some experience with it. I think Mike might have mentioned that you've worked with it.

My first OSS trade bow was coffee , I backed it with spoonbill skins , gave another one to Jerry that I left too much sapwood on and was running out of heartwood , it had a little bit of a hinge in it but shot fine after heat treating , Jerry let a young man draw it back , the kid yanked it to about 30" and it blew , Jerry felt bad about it , said he didn't think about him yanking it back like that .

I did see your bow , yep leaning up against the big tree by the pond , Tommy and Mike didn't know who it belonged to at the time , I just caught a glimps of it as I walked by , I was too tired to pay any attention to it at the time , as wore out as I was I should have just watched the clout shoot.

Yea, by Saturday I was pretty-well spent myself. That 14 year-old son of mine place first this year in the clout shoot. He had an erie knack of distance shooting. As an 11 year old, he placed 4th over-all. I think that was about a 25-28# bow.
What about Coffee tree for take-down bow? Would the billets give enough?
I know you spent some time with Mark Baker, had he worked with it?
Hope to see you at Rendezvous in June.

Mark said he tries to stick with osage , I don't think any of them had tried it before , thier dry climate is hard on the white wood bows .
I've been looking for some more coffee trees up on the river , I want to play with it some more and try a few other style bows with it and see what I can get away with , a coffee take down sounds good and I would be willing to try .
One of Marks buddies placed in the clout shoot also .

I plan on cutting some hackberry soon and maybe some other woods also , I'm about out of seasoned osage and the staves I have are loosing thier moisture slow , I have some white oak and walnut staves to play with now .

Love the takedown Doc. You'll have to show me next year at OJAM. There are so many talented bowyers at OJAM its incredible. Been going for about 7yrs. Guess I'll have to make your aquaintance next year. Billy done recruited me for a hat next year so I'll be busy. I saw his Kentucky coffee trade bow and it was absolutley gorgeous. I know they make a pretty bow but have'nt got to shoot one yet. Corngrats on your boy doing so well in the clout shoot. Danny

Sorry about recruiting you Danny , they put my other yellow hat in charge of a group next year and I was going to need some help ( Mike Bryant took our red hat ).
Are you going to make the campout in June Danny ?

Thank you for the kind words. This one ended up a bit on the heavy side, but if you drew it, you wouldn't guess it pulls out of the mid-50 lbs range.
Very nice community. I'm honored by the kind remarks.
