Title: Osage bendy handle recurve
Post by: Mo_coon-catcher on May 10, 2015, 03:56:18 pm
Finally got around to finishing a recurve a couple weeks back. It's a little on the long side for the draw length it was intended for. I will say that the 90 degree hooks were a bit of a pain to get aligned but now that it's shooting I feel it was worth it. It's 60" in a straight line between the nocks. The string bridges and and tip overlays are black cherry. I never measured the initial reflex before tillering but I think it took 1/4" or less of set and takes about 1/8" of string follow after 2 hours of shooting. Which the unbraced picture is it immediately after unstringing. It draws 45#@27". The handle is built up with cork and wrapped in raccoon leather. It seems pretty quick pushing a 450gr arrow a little under 200 yards. But lookng at the full draw I feel that it could be pulled back a few more inches comfortably.

Thanks for looking,
Kyle

Kyle,
Nice job on the hooks, but the pic's are a little small to see any detail.

My experience with big hooks is that if the string is not lifting off of the limb at full draw you have some extra weight on the tips that is not working for you.

Did you use dry heat or steam?......

Here's the pics a little bigger. I steamed them in. I mostly wanted to play with how far I could get them to go. I think I need to draw it back about 30" to get full use out of the hooks and the bows length.

Yep....good work though..
Next time you just need to refine your design some for the draw your looking for.

Looks good!  IMO a littler under 200 yards for a 45 pound selfbow is VERY fast.

Thanks for the comments everyone. When I get some time I ll grab that arrow and pull it back to about 30" and see what it can do. the guy I made the bow for backed out since he was moving to Iowa for a job. So I'm going to play with it and see why it can do. There are just two thing I'm worried about with drawing this bow back much further. A hole and a big knot. Both at the edge of a limb. I soaked yen in super glue several times to help them hold.
