Title: hot weather shooting?
Post by: thomas74p on June 05, 2015, 03:58:05 pm
my dad was never to motivated to shoot during the hot months here in oklahoma. I thought it was because he didn't like the heat, but, now I think it may be the bow that doesn't like the heat. will shooting in the heat of summer give my bow more "set" or cause "set" to come on sooner? in referance to osage, unbacked bows.

MoJam is in the middle of July and I didn't notice anybody worrying about the heat while shooting.  It's usually in the 90's that time of year.  I was shooting my boo backed hickory and I didn't notice any changes to  the bow.

Sounds like everyday down here. my bows do slow down with and all day target shoot, or, it might be me after lunch and a couple of cold ones. :)

Its not the heat, its the humidity. :).

I just figure that very hot, dry weather is akin to putting a stave in a hotbox, which we do to dry it out/increase performance by lowering MC.
Very hot, humid weather would slowly increase the bows MC over time, decreasing performance.

The bow feels better in the cold to me. Maybe its just in my head. I don't know.

Live in Kansas and shoot my Osage selfbows year around, even in light rain. Never for more than one day hunt or 3D shoot. Sealed with 5 or 6 coats of Truoil, and have never noticed a difference.
