Title: Mulberry Recurve
Post by: LittleBen on July 10, 2015, 09:39:36 pm
Here is a bow I've been tinkering with for a bit.

Started out as a pile of billet length logs I found in a park the very day they were cut. I was so bummed that they cut down my go to mulberry snacking tree, I took all the wood home as payment. My wife was not impressed with me, but I got the wood. Got enough for 4 sets of billets. All with character, and three sets wide enough for adult flatbows.

The bow is 58" ntn, about 1 1/2" wide at the fades, stiff tips. No overlays. All bending and straightening done with the heat gun. Took a fair bit of heat to get aligned. Draws 45# @ 26". Some minor fretting on top limb, evenly distributed, I think it will survive, they are not getting worse.

Stained, then a few coats of tru-oil/linseed mix.

Full draw coming as soon as I can get my photographer to cooperate. Sorry for the crap picture quality.

Cheers

Quite the curves on that one for it's length. Very nice. Makes me want to go work on the spliced up mulberry stave I've had sitting in the shop for like 8 years now.

Thanks guys!

Bowmo, yeah Theres a fair bit of curve in there. The angle isn't too severe though, so that keeps tillering more do-able, especially on a bow with snake in it like this one. I think it's just important to bring the bend in the limb all the way to the beginning of the stiff curves. It's easy to leave the outer part of the working limb too stiff. I really try to make sure I'm using all my working limb when I have stiff tips like that.
