Title: Short bows
Post by: John R on February 06, 2008, 02:21:26 am
Being new, I don't want to add a bunch of threads, so I titled this one short bows so others can post pics of their non longbows. I just remembered I had this little bugger sitting in a corner. It's a sinew backed white oak, 44" kind of paddle bow creature with bent tips and a sinew string. It pulls over 50 pounds at around 22 inches I'm guessing and spits an arrow really well. I originally made it to fit in a black ash strip quiver I made last summer along with it's arrows that are almost as long as the bow.

Like Jamie said that looks nice.  I don't remember the exact length, but this one had all natural bends. (Cascara)  For such a short little guy it's would really fling an arrow.   Keenan

Sweet! Sweet! Great bows. Awesome. Yankeemongiat and his wife think I'm weird, but any of those great bows would work for my master plan: I lost out on a yew stave on eBay at the minute and wound up buying a unicycle. I can't afford a horse, so.. We'll ya know where this is going. Even the folks on the unicycle message board think hunting deer on one wheel is a freakish idear.. Oh yeah, those are all way cool bows!!!!!

Its 1 7/8 to mid limb and then tapered to the tips.I only used a 4 in. handle just to save some limb.
I also only made the fads 1 inch for the same reason. It is a non bending handle.  :)

This is fun!

Working osage recurve that bends in the handle. 49" and only backed with rattlesnake skins, pulls 40# at 27". First bow I ever built from a stave.

some really cool bows! Keenan likes it when I make short bows cuz he can shoot them a lot better than me, and he sometimes ends up with them ;D here is a pic of a sinew backed yew, northern california style, it is 46" and 50#@20" a real screamer, but my draw is too long to shoot it accurately. (no Keenan, you cant have it 8))

Gosh guys after looking at all those great shorties I do believe I shall try one afer I get a few stave bows under my belt, although I have been leaning in the 64"-66" range since I started. I figure to do a shorty pyramid osage.Maybe 55"  What do you guys think. I pull 26" so thats not real long. Should'nt be a danger at 50# should it? Maybe let it bend in the handle some so I don't have to back it and I can get the whole limb working.   Danny

Post by: juniper junkie on February 17, 2008, 01:02:10 pm
if you are going to build short bows, it would be a good idea to keep the belly somewhat flat to distribute the tension force. a pyramid design concentrates the compresion more. just a thought, see what some of the others think. ;)
Title: Re: Short bows
Post by: Pat B on February 17, 2008, 01:15:04 pm
Danny, Going from 64"-66" I would try a 60" first. I have built a few 60"er now(osage) with stiff handles that pulled 55#@26"...1 3/8" at the fades and out to 3/8" tips. By moving slowly to shorter bows you will be able to finesse tiller more smoothly than with an abrupt length change. I am now considering shorter bows for the future just to see if I can but I'm leaning back towards a 64" to 66" straight limbed bow for my next years hunting bow.   Pat

Thanks Pat, I'll take that into consideration. Maybe make the next one. 64 then 62 then 60. that ought to get me going in the right direction.  Danny
