Title: Osage recurve 53" n2n, 23# @ 22" need help
Post by: VanceMan on July 19, 2015, 08:01:15 pm
Okay so I posted a bow a couple weeks ago that needed help with a back crack.  This problem is solved I put a course of sinew over the back of the bow.  Now I am wondering how I can get more draw weight out of this little bow.  It is 23# at 22" and 53" n2n,  so obviously it is much lower than my initial goal of 40# @ 28". I want to know how much I can increase draw weight with heat treatment, additional reflex, piking, or cured sinew (I put one layer of sinew on 2 weeks ago), or all of the above. Any help is appreciated!  Thanks :)

That brace shows a lot of wood not working, hardly any bend ten inches either side of the handle, i would give it to someone that needs a lower # bow and make another if it was me, bub

+1 bubby, needs a lot more bend mid-limb. Personally I'd pike it a little, add some reflex, and re-tiller as a bendy handle.

It is going to someone with a low draw weight tolerance.  If I work the areas you mentioned wont the draw weight just decrease further? And I cant really make it a bendy handle because I skinnied the handle already, maybe a semi-rigid handle? Thanks

Just because you narrowed the handle doesn't mean you can't make it a bendy handle check out some of  Blackhawks bows

Oh okay. So say I pike it 1" total, add some reflex midlimb, and also get those areas bending more near the handle; how much draw weight could I potentially gain? I know its hard to say but just an educated guess would be great, thanks :0)

You don't want the areas near the handle bending more, they're already just about maxed out. I'd heat treat those areas expecially well when adding in reflex and leave them otherwise untouched.

With three inches of starting reflex at the base of the recurves and proper bendy handle tiller I'd hope for 30#@25", my personal draw length. You're gaining durability and efficiency more than weight here.

Thanks for the input guys! I think I will pike it 1", heat treat, and add some reflex mid-limb. I haven't decided on the bendy handle yet, but also a good idea.. Thanks again

Limb on the right seems to be hinging and the left is bending to much mid limb. Id give it away and start over new unless you want a 5-10 pound bow

Get more limb working and pull the darn thing back. You can't heat treat it with sinew in place.  You'd be better off soaking the sinew off, heat treating into reflex and then re-sinewing with more layers.

Where's only 2 ways for you to increace the weight.

Shorten the bow I don't think you want to do that.

Your only real thing to do is add another corse of sinew. But make sure you let them dry before you bend the bow.

Chec the weight while retillering. Just keep adding corces untill you reach the #'s you want. You should be able to make 40#'s.

You just have to retiller between course's.  I build bows slowwwww so I've let courses of sinew dry a good month.  Dos'nt matter about dry time, $%$$#  $& and don't let it dry enough start bending it before it's dry, you'll be starting over. I know I've started over a couple times.

Sucks when your a couple months into it sinewing already.

You want to stay at 22" draw.

Yup...no more juice left to squeeze from that lemon....even if you add a lot more sinew, which is what you'd have to do,you'd be back about at the same weight fixing the tiller

One more word of advice...learn how to tiller and be able to make weight every time before messing with sinew n shorter higher stressed designs.
