My wife has been making paper mache figures for a few years now and selling them is a co-op gallery that she is a member of. Last year I began this project by forming this figure from 1" chicken wire. I got the shape down pretty good but just set it aside. Today I started adding the glue soaked paper. These figures take a while because you add the glue soaked paper then let it dry. Once it has dried you adjust the shape and add more paper. I will also use styra-foam to fill out areas as well. I'll post pics of my progress as I go along. So, what do you think so far?

In these last two pics you can see some of Marcia's paper mache "parts" to projects she's working on...

very cool....do you have an archer in mind? Looks like a NA at full draw. hope ya keep posting the progress.
rich
-
Thanks, Rich. That is sort of my shooting form. I may consider a NA when it gets to the bow, arrows and attire but I have to get the shape and paper covering perfected first. I'll make a wood bow and maybe cane arrows for him and buckskins would be cool. I will keep posting my progress.

Lookin good...
Del

I thought of your archery figures when I started this, Del. Maybe this will turn out as well as yours.
-
It takes an archer to get the balance and feel right... There are loads of art deco archery sculptures that are just nonsense. I've seen 'em in stately homes where the bow was free to rotate nd of course it was fitted the wrong way round. Try to tell 'em and get met with blank stares ::)

Looks like fun, ;D
Can't wait to see more.

I kinda picked up on that.
You know, Pat, I am still overwhelmed by the talents you pull outa your beard!

You'd be amazed what 've found in there, John. :o

Great minds think alike, Danzn Bear.

Impressive talents! Looking forward to updates.

Very cool Mr Pat looking forward to the finish

I like it Pat. Where do you find the time?

I really like it so far, can't wait to see the end product

Looks like fun! I've made some pretty wild Halloween costumes with paper mâché
Would be cool if you made a mini bow and arrow from wood!
-
Woo, I love those figures of Marcia's...
Figure skating Pears ;D... She's as bonkers as the rest of us
Del
-
Goat, I'm planning to build a locust Eastern Woodland bow, 2 fletch hill cane arrows and an appropriate quiver to dress this dude up.
She is Del. Very much so! ;D The big hats on the chickens were inspired by the Royal Wedding a few years ago.
-
That pic with me in it looks good Pat. ;D
Your wife does some beautiful work yous looks good also can't wait to see it finished.
-
The fisherman's dream, Rob? 8)
-
Love it Pat! That's really cool stuff!
-
Speaking of beards ya better put one on...heck im sure ya got enough on ur own face to spare to use on it
-
That's sacred stuff, Chris. ;D

If you are wondering where I get my inspiration from, here is the true artist in our family...
Inspiration! True artist! For sure! :)
Zuma
-
Thanks Zuma. She is a very talented person. 8)
-
The paper mache is great and all Pat. Im just wondering how you scored on such a hotty? ;)
-
She pursued me, Pearlie and after 37 years of marriage she's never seen me without the beard...good thing! ;D
-
You and ol' Roybert from PA had good luck with the ladies!
On a serious note, she is true artist. Ive seen a bunch of her work posted here over the years. Between you both, it must get pretty artsy in that house.
-
The house always looks like an artist studio and workshop. Good thing we don't get too many visitors or we'd have to clean up more often. ::)
-
I got the bow shaped today...

Will get more done of the figure today. I still have to make arrows and a quiver
-
Coming along nicely :)
Del
-
Id narrow those tips Pat, probably catch a bit more speed :)
Looking really good. Cant wait to see it all painted up.
-
You'll see I had to jack up the block he is temporarily attached to so I could get the right angle for his lower legs.
-
Proportions are really looking good. Do you draw a design to start or have you got so much experience you can just start shaping the wire? I am impressed.
-

Wow Pat... really looking good....It looks like a pretty long draw :) ;)........I might have missed it but what type of person is she making....eastern woodlands, modern?? ...that's what type of bow I would make.....that's cool 8) I think the woodlands Indian would look really neat.
Congrats to both of you.........
Can't wait for the finish product...............

I still have to work on the arms and legs to get the proportions right. The figure is 14" tall(if standing upright), the bow is 10" t/t and the arrows will be about 4" or so. I'll size the arrows to fit in with everything else. I think Eastern Woodland style with buckskins. I'll also thinking about a basket quiver. The bow is locust and I have narrowed it a bit and added single side nocks.
Chief, no design drawing. Just started forming the chicken wire until it looked right. My wife has been making paper mache figures for a few years now so she has been a big help with suggestions and her artistic ability has helped with proportions and will again when time for the tissue paper clothing and paint.
-
Have to agree with Pearlie, those tips will shake the paper off.
-
Looking good Pat!
-
Dang Pat that is looking very good, looking forward to seeing him all dressed up. ;) I assume it's a him, >:D can't really tell from the picture. ;) ;D
Pappy
-
If it works out well Pappy you may see it on the raffle table at the next Classic. ;)
-
That bow looks overworked... it has taken some serious set. Once you get a string on it, it may not have much cast :)
Just kidding, this is awesome! My skills don't go far into the artistic side, so I really admire those who have artistic skills. Looks great, I can't wait to see the finished product. Are you going to leave the string "imaginary"?
-
Pat that is looking very good, the best part is that you have animation already and thats a hard attribute to achieve ....Dell had it in his as well. You are very talented sir.
rich
-
Loope, I haven't decided about a string or not yet. That will be near the end of the project. I still have to get the hands and arms right then the head and the legs and feet. It is a pretty slow process just waiting for glue to dry. Once I get all that right I'll start on the buckskins and ornamentation.
I've been working on it a little each day but not much visual change so I won't bore y'all with more pics until there are more obvious changes.
Thanks Rich. Coming from you is quite a compliment. ;)
-
Been too busy with real estate to do more on this little project but hopefully will get back at it soon.
-
I think we should start bidding now.
Sorta like the stock market as you either
up scale or there is a hostile takeover. >:D
No matter, I want a shot at the art work.
Good stuff Pat.
Zuma
-
Thanks Zuma. I have it sitting where I can look at it and study the stance, head and arm positions, etc. I sometimes will twist or squeeze different areas to get the right attitude. Any distortions in the form will be covered when the cloths are draped over it.
-
That's looking real sharp, Pat! Am enjoying watching it come along.
-
I've done a little more work on my figure. Its slow work and I'm even slower doing it ::) but he's coming along nicely. Here are a few update pics...

Note the sunlight! that's a first in almost 2 weeks. Good to see and feel it again.
-
That's looking good Pat.
-
Looks great.....wish I had that good looking form..
DBar
-
Thanks guys. It is a slow process for me but I should have him ready by the Classic 2016.
-
He is coming along nicely Pat. You guys amaze me sometime with the stuff you can do. :)
Pappy
-
Slick shooter. Looks like he has the daily weather report
on his left bicep? I guess that helps with humidity, pressure
and windage. >:D
Zuma
-
I am glad to see you got out on the deck. We had some sun today and I actually cut some grass. I have heard from two of my buddies in Columbia so far and they are good. They have power and water. Lots of roads closed and more everyday so it is difficult to get around. Should start getting better now. Our tent camp in Rembert probably took a hit but it was on high ground. I will get down there in a couple weeks.
-
Here is an update. I had originally planned to do this guy in all paper mache but after some more thought I decided to do just him in paper mache and make his cloths, etc. with brain tanned leather and other materials I could come up with. nclonghunter(Lyman) sent me some scraps of brain tanned leather(thanks again Lyman) so here is a peek at his initial fitting...
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y199/PatBNC/IMG_0022_zpskmijcqtg.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/PatBNC/media/IMG_0022_zpskmijcqtg.jpg.html)
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y199/PatBNC/IMG_0023_zps7vxvbm14.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/PatBNC/media/IMG_0023_zps7vxvbm14.jpg.html)
-
That's too cool Pat, but he is getting feet right😈
-
Yeah, he'll have feet...and hair and leggings and a breech cloth and anything else I can think of. He is just temporarily removable from the stand now to work on him. I have a twisted sinew bow string and the fletching is real, cut down turkey feathers. The arrowheads and hawk are paper mache, arrows are bamboo skewers and the hawk handle is hill cane. His neck knife is made from rawhide but I may make a bone knife instead.
Here is another pic I forgot to post showing the hawk tucked in the braded hemp belt.
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y199/PatBNC/IMG_0026_zpsjmmmmunv.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/PatBNC/media/IMG_0026_zpsjmmmmunv.jpg.html)
-
Really looking good Pat
-
Thanks, D Bar.
The push pins are temporary. ;D
-
That's really coming together!
-
I got a feeling if I read this right, there will be a lot of tickets bought.
-
Pat, you are very welcome.....it looks great!
-
That's the plan, Eddie. I'm trying to top last years $1k.
Once I get everything cut out and stitched together he should look a lot better.
-
So interesting, Pat. Really cool project.
-
I would be happy to have him get my back in grizzly country. Looks like he is loaded for bear!!!
-
As many of my projects go I've changed directions a bit. I received some nice scraps of brain tanned leather from Nclonghunter(thanks again Lyman) that I was going to make a buckskin outfit for this guy. After a few attempts it just didn't look right. Looked more like a dressed up doll than a figure of a Woodland hunter. My other option and my original thoughts were to make it all with paper mache. Well, that's what I did and it is a 100% improvement. Just the way his buckskins hang on him now is definitely more realistic. I have made his quiver, possible bag and neck knife sheath from brain tanned leather, but I'm still not sure about the quiver. I'm contemplating a woven basket style quiver. The arrows are cane(bamboo skewers) with Eastern Woodland, sinew wrapped 2 fletch(real turkey feathers) with a paper mache arrowhead(also with sinew wrap). His hawk head is also paper mache and sinew wrapped. His neck knife is made with rawhide with a sinew wrapped handle. The 2 feathers on his braid are actual turkey feathers, cut from the very end of the feather and shaped to size. His belt is braided hemp cord.
I still have a lot of finish work to do and may make a few other changes but I'll study him for a while, from all angles to be sure it all looks right.
So, here he is as of now...

Pat, that is some true art-work right there, very well done sir. All the thought that went into him shows very clearly in the end product.
rich
-
Thanks Rich. That means a lot coming from a true artist! ;) Maybe I should inlay a knapped point into the base sorta like the little treasures you put in your work. 8)
-
Very nice, One of a kind. 8)
-
Pretty neat Pat. Very well done
-
Spectacular, sir!
-
Thanks guys. I made this figure to donate to Twin Oaks for the raffle table at the Tennessee Classic in May. You better get your tickets early before they run out. ;)
-
I'll put mine in last, then they will be on top.
-
That is very nice work Pat B 8)
Ruddy Darter.
-
Marvelous simply marvelous!
I put him in a haveahart so
he don't stroll off.
Zuma
-
That's way out there cool Pat.Nice project. My girlfriend enjoys her projects too,but hav'nt tried one of hers yet and that could be anything from making rugs to making cement flower pots.
-
wow awesome just awesome!!
-
Fan damn tastic pat, that turned out very cool
-
Very nice! So you do other things, than sit around by the fire, flinging mites, and nits, in the fire, that you have pinched out of your beard. Exceptionally nice right there, Mr. pat! Cool idea. Now you have to match your Wife's work, and make a full sized one, now that you have a model to work from. ;) OOOH! NO, forget that, Now you have to make a full sized Sasquatch, and put it at the edge of the road, by some trees, and put some reflective eyes in it! Oh, and you can have it dragging a Deer!, Or a Bear! Sorry, it is your work, and I shouldn't start putting what I would do, in your thread. My utmost apologies. Now go back to your nit picking. But it would be cool, to make a full sized Sasquatch ...... ;) Just saying...... But again, very nice Pat.
Wayne
-
Well done Pat, excellent results
-
Ah yes ,very nice. I might have to start walking now to get a shot at that.
Bone
-
Love it!
-
Since we are picking nits, tell him to move his arrow hand closer to his cheek. For crying out loud, he is plucking the string on his release! >:D
Yup, gonna have to send some cash down to be thrown in for a chance at that one.
-
Pat
I have a buy it now bid of $500. ???
If you let me have that loose anchored
archer. >:D
And to boot I'll donate that slacker to the Classic
if Pappy will give a reasonable portion to Sleeks
cause. :) Of course I am kidding about you art,
not the offer.
Zuma
Or we could make other arrangements lol
-
Thanks everyone. It has been a fun project. I've been thinking what's next.
John, he's not quite at full draw yet. He ain't plucked anything yet ;)
Zuma, it will have to be a grand. That's what he's going to earn at the Classic. 8)
I have to give Marcia lots of credit for this guy. I did the work but she showed me how.
-
Very nice Pat....it should do well at the Classic......
