Horse weed. Good for hand drills and atlatl darts.
-
whoo i'm just glad its not hog weed :) ;D
also cool to know that it has some uses :) i will wait tell it has dropped its seeds and dried out a bit before harvesting it.
-
Giant ragweed. That crap will form near impenetrable thickets. I hate the stuff. Josh
-
Yep, giant ragweed. Burn that crap. >:D This and the regular ragweed are what makes most folks allergic from now until frost. Nasty stuff.
-
Sure doesn't look like horseweed that we have in Penna, looks more like ragweed ;D :oBob

This could be another case of me "knowin" something all my life, but knowin it wrong. ???
We've always called it horse weed. Guess I need to check on it.
-
I always called it horseweed...until someone set me straight!
-
It's also known as horseweed, but so are several other weeds such as marestail. I wasn't disagreeing with you Scott, just clarifying a bit. Josh
-
Thanks for the gentle rebuff, barnesy. Like as not, my fragile ego would have never recovered had you given me both barrels. >:D
I'm still gonna call it horse weed, but I get what you're saying. 8)

Horse weed in in Mo. We used it as spears when a kid. Let them dry , pull it up and you got a spear after a little clean up.
-
Horseweed in West Ky too.

Horseweed in West Ky too.
Yep................a worm eats the center out of the stem and is a great fishing bait.....used it many times as a kid in the creeks of KY

We have it here and I didn't care what it was called when cutting it with a machete. It get's a lot thicker down in this swamp.
-
Giant Ragweed here in PA, if you cut the stems before they are naturally dried out, then let them dry. they will make a very lite but not too bad of a spear shaft. Atl atl style. Not gonna be super durable but would work in a pinch. I sued to cut this and thatch my forts with it as a kid.

Turkeys love it Imanged one farm it MD. One clover and beat food plot I planted it all the way around makes a nice thick edge cover. Rag weed, horse weed, squrril tails, All kinds of berrys. Make the edge as thick as you can.
while creating food cover for all birds ,turkey. Bigger thicket it is ther more th bucks feel safer. And just might come out in the field a little sooner.
