Title: Untamed
Post by: sleek on August 21, 2015, 09:06:29 pm
I wasnt having any luck with my staves for the bow trade. I just couldnt..... get into.... any stave I had. None were giving me that " oh yeah, I'm the one you need to be working on " vibe. So after loosing interest three times on three different staves, Patrick ( lebhuntfish ) says, "Here, I got one for ya.". He hands me a stave I could only describe as a pertified whale turd with berries.  Kinked  in two different planes, and not a section on it that isnt onot infested he handed it to me. I held it and instantly had that connection that could almost be considered spiritual. That feeling you get when you know your doing at that moment exactly what you were created to do. Yup! Thats the stave I needed. In a few hours with my KaBar I had her shooting.

Now as a disclaimer,  Patrick had started on the stave already and managed to chase a ring down its back and had roughed out the peofile before deciding this one wasnt to be his trade bow. I dont know why he didnt want it to be the one he was going to use but boy howdy am I glad I got it from him! Memory is a bit fuzzy, but I think I traded him a roughed out stave for it, but cant quite recall.... refresh my memory buddy!

At mojam I had a few guys shoot it. Target penetration was on point. It would burry half the arrow in. It had some handshock so I addressed the tips width a little bit. Few days after Mojam, I found myself in Missouri again. I brought Untamed along. It had a hole in the back that only went half way through. I filled that one with a piece of turquoise I had and bedded it with sawdust and ca glue. I wanted a different stone on the upper limb hole that went all the way through but didnt have one that fit. So, I made my own. I mixed pulvarized sidewalk chalk and ca glue to make a rather convincing saphire. I shaped it and she dropped right into the hole. Done.

This bow being " untamed " as it was I couldnt think of a proper finish. I was content to leave it as it was, naked and awesome. But while at Erics ( onebowonder ) I accidentally shot low and nailed the citonella candle we were using the night before to light up the target. Pat suggested using that as a finish. Well shoot yeah!  Why dont we already do this? I mean seriously,  citonella and bow wax should be a no brainer combo! Annnnnnnd its done. That candle wax makes an easy to buff in finish that smells great and didnt look bad either.  I really hope it runs off the skeeters.  Anyways,  enough font, heres some pics!

Always were safety glasses when first drawing a bow. Aim so that exploding limbs dont lodge in anything important.

I made this handle super narrow and let me tell you, you hold it and it belongs in your hand. This handle shape becomes an extension of your body....

Sleek .... My man! You are a boss of selfbows. How you looked at that scrap of firewood and said "I'm puttin' a string on that and bending it in front of my head" is beyond me, but you did and it came out stellar.

Chadwick, you lucky dog! I gotta say though, if my wife's going out dancing, new bow or not, Im going too and I'm getting my salsa on! But hey, to each his own. Maybe that's why my wife doesn't like dancing much ...

Man  buddy that thing turned out amazing!  If I remember right we did trade roughed out staves.

Sleek ain't kidding when he says that Untamed shoots and feels that good in the hand! I loved shooting this bow! And to watch sleek turn that thing into a bow with his kabar was sure a sight to see! Untamed is exactly that, absolutely no heat corrections were used in the making of this bow. I know because I watched him take it from a roughed out stave room a shooting bow in a few hours! It ended up a bit different than the plan I had in my head for it. But it was definitely in the right hands with sleek! And now hopefully Chadwicks will put some meat on the table with it! Your a lucky dog Chad! Patrick

Nice looking bend on that bow. And a fitting name also. I would love to see you and watch you when you become a monster with your kaabar and get a bow shooting in no time. Congrats to both of you a fine looking bow.

I've shot this thing a few times and was stunned that it was as well mannered and 'tame' in the hand as it was despite the knarly look of it and the name it bares.  Shoots smoothly and has a snappy release to it.  I more than half expected the wildly swooped about limbs to give it timing issues like crazy and shock in the hand, but I was singularly impressed with how perfectly gentle it felt to shoot this bow.

Wow Eric,  that was almost poetic. Like, an ode to it.
Ode to thee oh beautiful bent stick.
Natural and untamed,
Builded so perfectly to hunt with.

A lions roar never so frightful
As an arrow cast to game
To the archer so delightful

Upon your back adorn nautures glory
Builded by hands skill
Its feet per second, over 140.

Bend back oh beautiful thing!
And your sometimes friend do part
An arrow shalt though fling!
Into a woeful games heart!

Haha.... leave me alone, I entertain myself.

I'll sheepishly post some pictures of me with this superb bow. I modified it some, so don't be hating! I put in an arrow rest, leather wrapped grip, buffalo horn tips, sanded all edges down, added some reflex with dry heat. It actually pulls with the same weight as before, and the wood I removed from parts of it just makes the bow feel like it's mine. I'm shooting it tomorrow in an event here in San Diego, and taking it to Alaska on a moose guiding trip on Tuesday.
Thanks so much. I love the bow!
Michael

Thanks pappy. I really appreciate that! But honestly,  that stave WANTED to be a bow. It was easy. Especially with help from Pat.

Man, Chadwick,  I gadda say, you sure didnt hurt that bow none. Quite honestly,  I like it and am glad it was a raw enough bow gor you to modify an make it your own. Nice job on those tips by the way.  So, hows it feel with that leather wrap? When I made the handle it fell perfectly in my hand,  does the wrap help with fit and comfort for you?  Btw, what is your draw length? I hope I didnt get it wrong?

Post by: Chadwick on August 29, 2015, 02:15:32 pm
Thanks man.
My draw length is 26.5 on a good day. I was down to 25" because of poor form, but I'm working on it. It's a great bow for my draw length. The handle wrap is really just something I like for all my bows, and it covers the leather arrow rest I glued on. It felt great before, and still does.
