Title: Black Backed Bendy Black Locust
Post by: Blackcoyote on August 24, 2015, 09:26:07 am
Say that 5x fast! ;D

Here's one I finished up a few weeks ago but couldn't get a full draw shot due to a shoulder injury.

Stave: Black locust from Paulie
Backing: Rawhide
Tips: Buffalo horn
Grip: Cork build up with black leather
String: 18 strand fury

specs: 62", 50# @ 27", limb width 1-1/4" to the fades and then skinny on down to the tips which are under 3/8", bow and backing were dyed with Black Rit dye then a couple coats of shellac and 10 coats of tung oil.  Since I wanted everything blacked out, except the string accent and grip stitching I named her "Murdered".  This bow will for sure see some action in a few weeks come hunting season!

The bow started life as a N/A style then morphed into a hunting bow.  As always thanks for the inspiration, help, and smack talk to: Pearlie, Paulie, Greg, Cody and yes even Danny boy who I think gave me a cigar and beer (he's good for something!)

It looks even better in person. Pics never capture bow's just right. That dark horse might be perfect for ground blind hunting! Dark and short.

Excellent work. Really like the finish on the back and the handle looks comfortable. Get the right arrow and broadhead combo and that will be a killing machine. Hope to see pics soon with blood on it!

thanks man! trust me it was TOUGH to miss elm hall but I couldn't go and not work on something or not shoot a bow. I didn't want to risk missing bow season so I had to bail.

I'll make it up and be down to marshall earlier and will not miss elm hall!

You might want to consider wrapping some sinew just below the self nocks on your arrows.  It's good insurance to prevent them from splitting.

That is a cool and deadly looking hunting stick my friend, that black dye work you did on the on the rawhide
really sets it off and the profile and bend looks on the money. I hope were eating venison from that bow in camp at Grayling in a couple months.

Great looking bow.  That dye job will be great in the woods, just done set the bow down cause you may never find it again. lol
This gives me intensive to work on a nice black locust stave that I have.

Well done!

Camo finish is so good that I spent several seconds staring at 1st pic before finally seein' the bow.
Hope shoulder is fully healed.
Congrats!

thanks Ed! The dye really brought out all the shade variations and patterns in the rawhide.

Thanks Knoll, it's healing up, just slow - guess that's supposed to happen, once you're over 40!  :o

I'm suddenly sittin' here with 3 narrow/thin staves that will have to be bend through the handle bows.
You've done such a great job with this black backed bendy black locust beauty. Come down here and show me how it's done!!
