Title: Home made Camo
Post by: osage outlaw on September 23, 2015, 09:07:21 pm
Making my own camo has been on my to-do list for a few years now.  I think modern camo is designed for the human eye instead of an animals.  Its very detailed and looks great in the store.  When you see someone wearing that same camo outfit in the woods from a short distance away they look like a dark green blob.  I checked out several patterns and styles and the ASAT camo was a style that broke up a hunters outline better than realtree or the other brands.  Its just brown and black curving stripes on a light background.  I thought I could do something like that myself.  I bought some cheap clothes off of ebay.  I got the shirt and pants for $20 including shipping.  I already had some dye but I did buy 2 bottles for a couple of bucks each.  So my total investment was around $25.  Bow season is pretty warm for the first month.  I got the clothes big enough that I can ad some layers on underneath.  If it works good I might try it on some insulated clothes for colder weather.

I used some cheap paint brushes with a couple of the colors.  They worked better than the foam brushes.

The front

I ran thin on dye for the back.  It isn't as dark as the front.

The shirt was lighter than the pants.  I might try to find a darker shirt.

Most of our stands are in trees like this with limbs breaking up our outline.  I think it will work out OK.  These pictures are from 15 yards away.

Dude! Extra points for you!

Test the clothing under a black light, too.  Not likely the Rit in those colors has UV enhancers, but if so, you will just be a neon sign sitting in a tree!

I don't have a black light JW.  I think I saw some hunting laundry detergent that has UV inhibitors or something like that.

I like the Outfit, but I'd leave the Ruby Sleepers at home.

Well, do what you can to hang out with crime scene investigators. They got all kinds of cool stuff like that.

Looking good!  I agree that many of the newer patterns start looking like a blob the further away you get.  I think breaking up your outline is the most effective thing you can do for camouflage, and it looks like you've done a good job of that.

Great job Clint ! Just play the wind right and everything will work just fine ;) haven't used camo bow hunting for many years and the freezer gets full.

I knew someone would comment on my shoes.  My hunting boots are still packed away.

The darker background shade of pants along with pattern of paint ya did makes ya disappear into that tree.

I wish the shirt was the same shade as the pants.

Both pieces are cotton.  Does that glow in the UV light?

Looks good, but I think the pants work better than the shirt.

I was surprised not to see you in shorts.  If that were the case, you'd have to paint your legs.   ;D :D
You have a keen sense of "do-it-yourself".  Always enjoy your creativity.

You could wash the shirt in a product called "camo restore" to darken it. I used camo restore to bring my old faded Brigade Quartermasters ASAT back to the original colors.

That said, camo is vastly over rated, you don't really need the stuff. I hunt some of the spookiest deer on the planet and only wear shades of grey and brown, no camo. The deer don't pick me out any more than when I was a camo devotee.

After 40 years of wearing camo, I literally felt naked going into the deer woods without it but was determined to break free of the camo clan. It didn't seem right for me to hunt with my 30s and 40s style archery equipment and wear the latest high tech camo clothes. Sorta' like putting a scope on a flintlock rifle. I had to have the right persona to match the equipment.

Camo in my opinion is a sales ploy. Deer supposedly have a better sense of smell than dogs. Keeping down wind is a bigger task than looking like a bush.

It looks nice. Hopefully it is also comfortable.

True camo isn't needed, but it will help hide that slight movement they do pick up on.

I just wanted something to help break up my short round outline.

yeah you should be able to mix up a bucket of dye and dip the whole shirt in it.  should darken it up without loosing the pattern.

Personally I think it looks good like it is, especially in a tree, always some light sky behind you.
That matches very good I think. :)

I bet some walnut hulls ground up in water would turn that shirt just the right color to match the pants.

I was thinking the same thing eric.  I made some walnut cover scent a couple of years ago.  It darkened my clothes a little.  Might have to give it a try
