Title: My Colorado Elk Bow and Trip (added pics)
Post by: Dvshunter on September 27, 2015, 06:09:51 pm
I just made this bow and have been shooting and packing for my elk hunt. This is the bow that I took with me. It ended up 57@26 which is a few lbs less than what I wanted but I like it the same.  I put the tips on the bow at mojam and finished it up here at home. I just added the leather grip two weeks before I left. I cut it entirely to close  but I'm happy with the result. I took a lot of pics because it was my first time in Colorado. I hope you guys don't mind.
The bow is an Osage selfbow with bacote and waterbuffallo horn for tips. The string is 14 strands of 452X . The leather is some deer that I traded from Roy some time ago. It measures  about 58in. nock to nock. It shoots a 625gr. arrow with authority. I never got the shot I wanted on an elk but I'll bet a whitetail or two will drop from it this season. Thanks for looking.

I have more but they are mostly the same. I forgot that this was also heated again at mojam and then the tips were flipped almost to the point of recurving. The limbs ended up kinda hybrid. Thanks for looking everyone.

I'd know that was yours if I found in a pile of fifty other bows, has your style all over it.  Fantastic bow for chasing elk Dave and the bend at full draw looks like serious business. To bad you didn't get a shot buddy, I heard you were out there and I was rooting for ya to take one down. How was the experience, did you see
a lot of them or have any close encounters?

Thanks guys.

Colorado was just what everyone says it is. I gassing a great time I can't wait to go back next year already. I did have a 35 yard encounter with a screaming bull and cow but I was sitting cross legged and that distance from that position was lit of my comfort range. Then I saw two other bulls close but to thick to shoot where they were. They will be waiting for me next year.

Nice bow and I am still trying to connect on a elk with a selfbow. I better hurry though cause I know what it takes to elk hunt at 10000 ft.  Congrats on your bow Arvin.

Very nice bow and a great adventure turned tradition.  Hope you get one next year.  It's pretty neat getting that close to a rutting bull isn't it  :)

I've had 2 opportunities to elk hunt in the San Juan Mts in SW Colorado and would do it again in a minute. We hunted between 9k and 10k but the elk forgot to show up. We did hear a few bugles but had no close encounters.
Very nice bow and plenty of weight for elk. Hopefully you'll get one next year. You'd better start saving up now though.  ;)

Nice pics Dave! The one of your bow leaning against the cabin reminds me of our cabin near Colorado Springs. This is making me home sick for the rockies! Here is a pic of our families place. Looks a lot like where you were.

Thamks guys.

Your place looks pretty nice pat. That would be a tuff one to let go.

Thanks eric. I absolutely had a blast. Im going again next year.  I had a buguling 5x5 following a cow at 35 yards but i was kneeling and doubted the shot so i just watched him walk off.  I sat by his wster hole in a thick patch of quakie thicket that night and had him at 40ish yards but was sitting cross legged and again just watched him walk off. Still a very cool experience.

I'm glad you are going next year bud! I'm going to try, not sure about the selfbow but would love to. I may use (if I get it done) a flint lock I wanting to build.
That is a trip you will remember for the rest of your life!

Beautiful hunting bow with perfect tiller! Also nice work all around. And great Colorado pics, always want to visit the US when seeing such great landscape.

One note about the string:
I use the same material and use 2x3 strands up to 70#, 2x4 strands up to 100#.
One strand breaks at 70#, I've tested.
Reducing the string will bring that 5 fps you have aimed for, test it!
To fit the arrows, just make a double serving at that place where your 3 fingers are.

Pretty funny there Clint.  Spiders are to afraid of getting caught up in there.

Simeon, thanks for the tip. There is no doubt that I would get that boost, but after a week of hard hunting and seeing the wear on my string, I think I like the extra strands for insurance alone. ;)

Thanks again guys!

Thanks for the id on that flower mark.  Once the flowers get crushed they definitely have a nice strong smell.   They grew everywhere we hunted and I would grab them and rub them on my clothes for a makeshift cover scent. Mixed with pine I think I blended in nicely.  :D

Sweet bow, with nice clean lines and a great looking tiller.  Even though, skins and different stain jobs can look great, It's nice to see Osage fresh, and naked.
Well Done!
