Now, this is a project I'm working on. A longer (than my usual) recurve with deflexed fades. I will go for a fuming process, but with a (hopefully) faded two tone surface. In other words I will tape the tips and fades and remove portions of the tape while the fuming process. We will see what comes out.
Below is a pic with the wrapped tips. My plan is to remove tape ring Nr. 5 after the first day, Nr. 4 after the second and so on. I know that the fuming damps vaporize somewhat under the the tape, so I suspect not a ring like (from dark to bright), but a gentle faded color. Hope you understand what I mean.
A knot hole at handle is filled with tin and sanded smooth.
Tips are strengthened with a horn wedge insert.
Arrow pass is a inlayed and in shape sanded predators tooth. I found the jaw in the woods, it's probably from a dog.
More pics in about a week.

Looks damned good.... ;)
-
Looks amazing already! :)
-
This will be interesting to see.....so far, so good.
-
Interesting
-
I'm excited to see the faded effect on this one, good luck sir
-
I did a similar thing on a small scale. I was testing a small piece 4" long so I taped(masking tape) half of it to be able to see the difference. Left it for two days. The ammonia either went under or through the tape because their was no difference between the two halves. I will be watching your results intently :D :D
-
Sweet profiles. Looking forward to seeing it after fuming. 8)
-
cant wait to see it done
-
Very cool idea.
-
looking good! be watching to see if you get the shading you want

I know what you mean DC. I watched the same thing, we will see what I get. I have put the tape on very hard.
It's in the pipe and I've took off tape nr. 2, there is a difference but not that much I hoped for. This portions are now treated with the ammonia fume for the rest of the session, I wonder how it settles in
-
Here I'm again ...
Took it out after 5 days, let it damp out for another 5 days. The two tone fading did not come out as strong as I hoped for, but still looking good.
Hmmm, next time I will try with film tape, or sealing with shellac.
Anyway, I'm very pleased with the cast, she's a fast bow.

I know, I know ...
f/d comes asap, maybe weekend – it's already dark when I come home from work :-(
-
I like it. There is some fading there. Looks good.
-
Very nice Simon, love the profiles.......but did I miss the specs....length, weight etc.......

I love the way you shape a piece of wood into a bow, that another beauty of a bow Simon. Cool to see the wedge inserts at the tips again as well.
-
Sweet looking bow simson.Bet it does shoot fast.Lots of detail work which catches the eye.You do a lot of extras good.Like the low resistence type arrow pass too.The arrow rides on the very least amount after release.Great pics. The fuming I'm not familiar with but see why you like it.
-
I seem to remember back in my rendesvousing days shooting muzzleloaders a barrel finish called plum brown.I know this used on almost any wood will give it a natural aged looking petina.Even almost making hickory look like hedge. It was applied and then heat was put on it for it to change the color of the metal or wood.
-
its a beauty!
-
??? I missed this one, beautiful as usual. :)

You know simson your laminated sliver of horn in your tips could be a fix it solution too for splintering from sharp bending recurves in tips.Someone probably has already done it I'm sure.
-
Great looking bow. I love the profile and the faded look of that bow.
-
Your bows are just beautiful Simpson. Always a pleasure and inspiring looking them over. Just out of curiosity, where do you get your osage living in Bavaria?
-
Beautiful color!!! (and bow!!)
Thanks for sharing.
-
now I decide I`l try fuming too, maybe next spring cause you told this process is very stinky I have to go outside.
I like your craftmanship and think i learned a lot from you, but when ever I see some Posts from you or some other guys I come back to the Floor.
Greetings, Hans

Had also this one to get completed, sorry for tearing up an old thread. Hope you are still interested. The bow is already shot in and I finally got the f/d pics done. I'm very pleased with the cast of this bow.
Here are the f/d pics:

Well, I thought a glossy finish would look good. It brought out the colors a lot more intensively. Though I'm not sure leave it or not …

Perhaps you remember, I wasn't really pleased with the contrasting colors on this one. (I did a fuming job with different long timbs at limb, tips and handle). I had three additional rings at the handle back so I decided to carve in some finger grooves to bring the more fresh yeller sage to the surface. I think it did good on the former a bit boring handle. If you look close you can see how the ammonia damps went into the wood. At handle the exposure was only one day.
Btw., in the background you can see my arrows growing: pseudosasa japonica

I rubbed some white pigments into the fresh carved fingergrooves, visible in the early wood rings.

Fantastic bow Simon just fantastic
-
You Sir are a fine bowyer with a keen eye for bringing the hidden beauty in wood out for all to be able to appreciate. I have been away from here for awhile, and don't post much; but had to compliment you on your craftsmanship! I like all the bows I have seen of your's Simson, but this one is my favorite so far. Just about the time I start thinking that you have used up all the tricks you pull out some more! My hats off to you. Thanks for sharing.
-
I like how that is a stiff handled bow that still looks like it is a bendy-handled job. love the fingergrips too. beautiful. you are a master.
-
WOW simson.Stunning bow.Does the cast of it impress you?You have a tendency to go outside the box on practically every bow.Good way to not get bored making these bows.
-
Very nice bow. Arvin
-
Very nice Simon, love the profiles.......but did I miss the specs....length, weight etc.......

Sorry, my delay ...
She's 65" long and draws 63/28" after shot in
Thenks Gentlemen, I'm glad you like the stick!
-
No problem Thanks!
Awesome Simon you are and artist with wood sir......wow
DBar
-
Wow! That bow is a 'Looker", and really Ballsy making those slices in the limb tips.
-
The bend in the limbs looks flawless Simon, smoother than silk. Those fingers on the grip are beautiful as well, especially the way they contrast in color compared to the fumed color on the bow. The whole bow is stunning really, another one of a kind masterpiece from you. :)
-
Well done . I love the curves on this one.
-
Nice Simon, you are always coming up with something different, and really helping to spur everyones imagination. Carving the finger grips into the handle after fuming is just another example of this. Beautiful bow, and that tiller is flawless!
Ed
-
Wow.
-
Very very nice!
-
:o :o :o 8) 8) 8)
-
Yeah, beautiful. A little deflex let's you get away with much bigger recurves, and your execution is flawless. Beautiful.
-
I'm sure this question has been asked before, but do you know if the fuming adds any beneficial properties to the wood? it would be worth doing just for the look, so benefits would just be icing on the cake!
